Chapter 1 Take Responsible

"Apologies.... Miss, young master had already warn us not to let you in." said the middle age guard sternly as he tried to block Selena's way.

"Erm I... It wouldn't be long, I swear! just give me a minute, no even just a couple of second will do. I just want to clear some stuff so... Um please, please, please let me in. I'm begging you, mister." plead Selena.

It was a broad daylight, outside the Anderson's manor Selena was almost covered in sweat as she plead the guards repeatedly.

However, no matter what she says, the guards remain unmoved, just like a piece of a cold mountain blocking her way in... Disregarding her unemotionally.

Just as if someone throws cold water on her, Selena felt as if something was dying inside her. She shouted on the top of her lungs, "Emyr I know you're in there! Come out for a minute... talk to me..!"

In the end, no matter how loud she screamed, she'd only received a dead silence.

After an hour of calling and convincing the two guards, Selena took a step back lifelessly like a soul left on its body. She heard one of the guards sigh.

"Isn't she already 30 plus? She is too old for Mr. Smith, don't you think?... From the looks of her, I bet she must be using drugs!"

Selena frowned, her steps halted-she had a second thought to turn around and clear it up to these guards that she had never use drugs and lastly she was only 20 years young!

However, her body abruptly stopped when she saw the reflection of herself by the lake next to her.

All youth was gone from her face and the sparkle that had once graced her eyes has long faded.

She wore a gothic makeup, thin frame, dry hair, face like a devil and wears old black baggy clothes that made her appearance look like an exact thirty years old beggar.

She actually resemble of the old hag, the one who gave the apple to Snow White. Pure wicked witch, hmph.

Thus, her gothic makeup was very thick. She absolutely looks like a demon who had escaped from Hell.

Although, even if she was only a twenty years old, young lady!

Nevertheless, she could only endure this disguise if she didn't want to court death!

Selena smiled bitterly as the pain from the last few years was about to torment her mind once again.

She sigh and slowly dismissed her thoughts. She drags her tired body and began to walk away.

_

The evening was still and gusts of strong cold wind were blowing.

Selena was still walking mindlessly down the road.

Ever since her dad fall into his dead bed and was still in a vegetative state, lights of hope in her life flickered; each day it turns into dimmer leaving her stood in an uncertain path.

She has no will to live anymore!

The one's who she care and loved every single day were ingrates who stabs her severely in her back!

She was always hiding in her sister's shadow avoiding such limelight since it never been her thing; her fiance and the sister was the most understanding living she had ever thought, she wanted so badly to confront at least her so-called fiance about the rumors speculating online but she realized he was ignoring her!

At that very moment, a blinding light flashed from the end of the road.

Selena lost her stupor and instinctively looked straight ahead. The luxury cars came towards her one after the other, it was as fast as lightning.

The first vehicle stopped at an emergency break and it quickly drove in the other direction. Unfortunately, the next one was too late to avoid Selena, so the car headed straight up towards her.

Her instinct told her to run but as if her leg was glued on the road, numb and stiff, Selena gelt helpless as she couldn't do anything but give in and instinctively close her eyes... Waiting to put an end to her life.

The car hit Selena. Her head landed first which makes her gradually fell down and lost unconscious right after.

She fell into a long dream.

...

"What happened? Why did the car stop all the sudden??" Daniel frowned as he looked around.

"There's a woman..." A young man outside looked anxious. He nervously looked at the man sitting in the backseat.

A man wearing a pair of gold-framed glasses patiently reads some papers. He looked up coldly as if he read their thoughts.

The car temperature immediately decreased.

_

"The patient is still unconscious but her condition has stabilized. She suffered a minor concussion from the head, but a week or two of rest was enough to get her back on her feet.. However,..."

Inside the hospital ward, the doctor explained in detail the girl's physical condition to the man with his back turned.

The statuesque man frowned slightly.

_

After a long time, Selena woke up. She opened her eyes, realizing that she was lying down on a bed, she raised her head sideways and immediately caught the figure standing on the edge of the window.

One hand of the man was casually hidden in his pocket, hip distance apart, toes pointed out and lastly a straight spine. He wore a slim-fitting tailored suit that emphasized his broad shoulders and slender waist. His white shirt was buttoned up to the collar.

His body seemed to be encased in ancient frost. His deadly calm demeanor was like an ancient king.

The man noticed Selena's crystal eyes eying on him so he looked up with a deep gaze from the direction of the sky towards to Selena. The man's cold gaze immediate penetrated the girl.

The look the man gave her felt intrusive, like a sharp surgical knife slicing her piece by piece; Selena's bones began to trembled.

Without hesitation Bella decided to avoid his daring eye as well. However, she couldn't help but fall into his bottomless dim pupils.

For a minute of silence, she impatiently asked, "Sir... Did you bump into me? I mean were you the one who hit me? Right you... you hit me! What if I die or what if I can't walk anymore, will you work for my needs!... I... I'm not being rude of course but... But what if i become disable, will you take the blame? Will you take responsible?!"

Daniel who was standing quietly by his master's side was already breaking into a cold sweat... No one has ever dared to scold his master and yet this girl actually got the nerve!

However Mathieu just stared at the woman on the bed, as if he's trying to tell if the expression on her face was real.

After a long time, he finally seemed to believe that the woman did not know his identity. He spoke coldly, "What do you want?"

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
