Chapter 1 New Jersey

The weather was just the way I liked it, windy and sunny. I can taste freedom at the tip of my tongue and it feels so elegant. No more anyone monitoring me, no more hearing the gossip of my course mates. I am going to make sure I enjoy every bit of my stay in New Jersey.

"Wifey!" a very familiar voice that I will always be able to recognize anywhere called.

I turned with a big smile on my face to see her running towards me at full speed. Wow, I didn't know how much I missed this girl until now.

My name is Evelyn Grayson, and I am a 21-year-old final-year student. And the slender pretty lady running towards me is my best friend AKA, my husband.

Ava and I have been together since the day she smashed a boy's nose for calling me a whore's daughter in elementary school. It was hard for me that day.

First time in school and everyone has already known that my mum is a whore. Since then, we have been inseparable until the day she was to move with her parents to New Jersey, where she was to stay for college.

She asked me to come with her, and I wished I could, but I was still controlled by my mother. And immediately that control was gone, applying for a new school in New Jersey was the first thing I did before I told Ava that I was coming.

And here I was in front of the airport watching my best friend shout out to me like a crazy person as she runs to meet me. I could feel the happiness from the expression on her face, and I was so happy that I came.

Before I knew what I was doing, I ran off to meet her also, hugging her while she was doing the same. Her body was shaking as she sobbed on my shoulder. I miss this girl, the same girl who was with me when I lost the most important part of my life.

As I thought back to how she stood by me through my difficult times, I couldn't stop the tears from rolling down my cheeks. How many years has it been now since I last saw her?

"Husband, why are you crying? Do you want to ruin your make-up?" I teased, wiping away the tears that were already trailing down her cheek.

"What happened to you? You have slimmed down" she hiccuped cupping my cheeks in her hands and checking me out from head to toe.

Someone who doesn't know, will think that we were a couple. Countless people have thought the same way, back when we were still young and always together.

"I think I'm still the same way I was three years ago"

"No, you are not. You have slimmed down, but don't worry, I will make sure you gain a lot of weight before you know it"

Smiling I said, "make sure you do just that ok"

"Ok" she nodded childishly as she stared at me. Before I could ask her what was wrong, she started running around the airport, telling every single person that her wife had come to stay with her. I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

But if I don't stop her now, people will think she is crazy.

"Ok girl, I think they get it"I muttered as we both burst out laughing. It was hilarious.

"Come on, my car is down the road". We both walked hand in hand to her guy and I'm not surprised she was driving a Ferrari. It has always been her dream car.

"A Ferrari huh" I grinned. She laughs putting my things in the booth.

"I told you that whenever you come, I will use a Ferrari to pick you up," she grinned.

We entered and she drives off. I'm enjoying the ride with Ava, it has been so long since we last saw each other up close like this.

"What are you looking at? Anything on my face?". She asked, touching her face to see if anything was actually on her it.

"There is nothing on your face Ava, I just missed you that's all" I whispered. She blinked up at me and hugged me.

"Eyes on the road, Ava" I shout out. She is crazy, how can she hug me when she is driving?

"Am sorry, I am just sentimental right now".

I started laughing because If she could see her face right now, she will also laugh." I'm so going to relish it here"

"Of course, you will, I am going to make it my priority to make sure you never remember that psychopath you call a mother again. I'm going to erase all your memories of her with good ones". I have known Ava for many years, and I know she means everything that she just said.

I didn't bother replying to what she said, but instead, I shut my eyes and just savor the moment. I can still remember how crazy it was the day I told my mom that I was leaving. She nearly ran mad that evening even though she was mad.

I mean, what woman in her right sense can't control their sex dive? She was mad, to begin with.

"What did you just say?" She asked me that evening.

"I said I am moving to New Jersey tomorrow morning" I repeated my sentence, ignoring the dead glare she was giving me.

"Why?"

"To complete my studies, and to start a new life". Maybe I shouldn't have said that, then she won't have lost it. But I don't regret it one bit. I should have said it earlier.

"So you want to leave me, huh? You ungrateful bitch. You think I will let you leave" she squealed right at my face, but I didn't move from my spot.

I just stayed there and listened to her ranting for the last time. When I had had enough, I looked her right in the eyes and said, "You can't stop me, I am leaving and there is nothing you can do about it". With that being said, I walked back into my room to continue parking.

Even from the closed door of my room, I could still hear her cry and her ruining whatever her hand landed on, but I ignored her and am happy I did.

Glancing back at my best friend, I smiled. This year and the ones to come are sure going to be the best years of my life.
