THE DARK PRINCESS Chapter 1 PRINCESS MIA

I was sitting in front of the camera, trying to record my project just like the literature teacher demanded when I heard my name.

"Mia!!!!!!!" I heard my nanny calling, and I knew it was time to eat breakfast and get ready before the school bus got here.

I chose to ignore her because I was not feeling well enough to go to school, but no one wanted to listen to me. They think I was making excuses to skip school.

When I said I was not feeling fine, I did not mean physically; I meant emotionally. Things haven't been so great for me at all.

"Young woman, why aren't you answering your name?" My mom asked, barging into my room with a furious expression on her face.

"Don't you know how to knock"? I asked her, totally ignoring her look.

"What did you just say?" She asked, coming close to me.

"I said, Don't you know how to knock, or do you just intrude on people's privacy?" I repeated, looking her straight in the eye.

"So you have grown wings to talk back at me, right?" She asked, dragging me by the hair, but I pushed her. She fell back and was surprised by my action.

"Don't ever drag me like that again; I am not the small Mia you used to know. This Mia right here is ready for anything." I told her as I took my school bag and headed down the stairs.

I went to the kitchen to see if I could grab something to eat. I was about to turn when I felt something hitting my head. It was my mom; she broke a plate on my head.

Did she just break a plate on my head? I felt something liquid running down my face, and when I touched it, it was blood. I heard screams around me, but I was feeling dizzy. Then I felt something deep, like something controlled my body, and I headed straight for the kitchen knife and went after her.

I wanted to make sure I damaged her stupid face so no modeling company in the whole of America would ever want her again. But she was fast enough to block it, making me stab her hand instead.

"Mia!!!!! Please stop this at once. What has come over you?" I hear my nanny saying, and then it feels like the spell has left. What just happened? I looked around to see my mom on the floor with her hands bleeding. She looked scared, but what is she scared of, and why is she bleeding? I looked at my hand and saw a knife with blood dropping out of it.

What have I done? I stabbed her, but I didn't do it.

Before I knew what was happening, the police were already at my house, and I was arrested.

As they took me away, I saw my mom being treated by a doctor, and she did not even think twice before telling the police to make sure I never came out of the cell and that they should make sure I never got out.

"Miss, what's your name?" One of the officers asked me.

"My name is Mia," I replied to him.

"Who is that woman that you stabbed?" He asked

"She is my mom," I replied with my head down.

"How old are you, Mia?"

"I'm fifteen years old."

"Why did you stab your mom, Mia, knowing you would be punished by the law?"

"I don't know what came over me; she broke a plate on my head, and before I knew it, I was with a knife, and she was already bleeding."

"Wait, she broke a plate on your head?" He asked

"Yes," I replied before he even noticed I was bleeding. He stood up and left. When he came back, he brought a first-aid kit with him and tended to my wound.

"Mia, can you tell me more about your mom?" He said. It was more of a request than a question.

"But everyone knows her; she is a well-known model," I replied. My mom is a model who cares nothing about anyone but herself.

"I know everyone knows her as a model, but I want to know her as a mother, not a model," he said.

"Okay, what do you want to know?" I asked him.

"What was your relationship with her like?" He asked.

"We don't get along; we are more like enemies. All my life, she was never there; all she ever wanted was to get more beautiful for her modeling business. I was raised by my nanny because she was never around. I barely see her, and we totally lived like strangers until last year, when she started hitting me for no reason. Whenever she has a bad day, she will say that I caused it," I told him.

"What about your dad?" He asked

"I think it's better you ask her that," I replied, not wanting to be the one to say that part. A woman who left her marriage for her career. She didn't even consider her children.

The officer took me back home and requested to see my mom, who was not happy to see me at all.

I was told to go upstairs since they had something to discuss. I went to my room restless, not knowing what they were talking about, which killed my curiosity.

My life has never been as I expected. My mom got married to a well-known king in England; she wanted to be a model, but the king needs a queen beside him. My mom was pregnant when she gave birth; she had twins, me and my brother. We were just a few months old when my mom filed for divorce, and she took everything she wanted, but my father wanted my twin brother, leaving me with her.

At least that's what my nanny told me since she has been close to my mom. She said my mom never said why she left her marriage. She only said she wanted to live her dream. I loved my mom so much, but she was never there for me.

On my graduation day, I waited to see my mom, but instead I saw my nanny; she was the one there. My mom just cared about her weight, how to look beautiful, how to buy the latest outfit, and how to impress the world.

I grew up without my mother's love. When I turned twelve, she started acting weird toward me. She kept telling me that my father rejected me, and she told me that I should worship her for that.

She said she regretted not leaving me with the motherless baby or even selling me out. Those were the words I heard all my life growing up with her. I was rejected by my father and hated by my mother.

My mom said she would send me over to my father when I turned sixteen. That was their agreement. And I will be sixteen in a few months. I'm scared; I don't want to jump from frying pan to fire. I do normally wonder how my brother is doing; I am sure he is having his best life.

But if you ask me, I want to stay here with my mom even though we don't get along. I can just avoid her, and maybe until I am ready to fend for myself. Growing up, I never lacked anything.

Since the day my mom took me, my father has opened a separate account under my name where he pays in money every month for my upkeep.

But my mom never gave me access to it; she said not until I turned sixteen. I heard a knock on my door, and when I opened the door, it was my mom and the officer standing beside her.

I stood staring at them because they were not saying anything, and then my mom sighed.

"Start packing, young lady; you have a flight to catch tomorrow morning," she said with a mean face.

"What? I thought you said I wouldn't go until I was sixteen, and it's like two months away," I replied.

"Well, I changed my mind. I will do anything to get you away from me," she said and left.

"Hey, you don't look excited about going to see your father. And I heard you were an infant the first time you met him," the officer said.

"I see him every day on TV, and that's enough for me. He doesn't want me, so why should I stay with him?" I said, nearly screaming at the officer.

"I'm sorry, Mia, but no matter what, he is your father, and nothing can change that. You can just go; maybe it won't be that bad. After all, your dad is a king, which makes you a princess, and every girl your age will love and wish to have your life," he said.

"Then they are stupid; I don't want to be a princess; I don't want to be called a freak by my friends; I don't want this life," I said, nearly in tears.

"I'm sorry, Mia, but you don't get along with your mom, and your dad is the only person you can stay with. And I am sorry if your friends think that you are a freak. But what really matters is what you think about yourself; that's all," he said before he left.

I just want to live a life like a normal girl, not the daughter of a model or some princess.

"And who are you? What do you actually know about us? Did you come because you saw I was alone, because you know you are way stronger than I am? Did you come to have your way with me, because that's what I have to face in the hands of men? First it was that fat, smelly, and unkept idiot at the grocery store, then Mr. Ken, and now you!" I roared in anger. I was struggling to catch my breath and talk slowly. "Oh, so this is why you were getting all worked up. Sorry, sweetie, but I'm not even a bit interested in your body. You don't know who I am, do you?. Well, let me introduce myself. I am Damion Volk." He said it like I was supposed to know who he was. I just stared at him in total confusion. "You don't know me." He said and let out a little laugh before running his hands through his hair.He looked up to the sky as his pair of grey eyes reflected the moon. Piercing grey eyes that seem to bore into those he meets, a chiselled face with sharp angles, and a small, sly smile that hints at a mischievous sense of humour. His dark grey hair styled perfectly, framing his face with a sense of sophistication and control. His features are refined, with high cheekbones and a strong jawline that speaks to his confidence and determination. But it's his eyes that truly reveal his nature-cold, calculating, and always seeming to size others up, even as they sparkle with a playful glint that suggests he's up to something. His gaze is hypnotic, drawing others in even as they sense the danger lurking beneath the surface.

For two years, I was the invisible force behind tech billionaire Kieran Douglas, convinced that our "private" romance was his way of protecting us from the tabloid spotlight. I managed his mergers, warmed his bed, and waited for a future that didn't exist. The illusion shattered at 6:00 AM when a Page Six alert debuted Kieran’s "real" romance with socialite Aspen Schneider. Before I could even process the betrayal, Kieran sent me a cold, professional text: "Order flowers for Aspen. Pink peonies. Her favorite." When I tried to walk away, my own mother called me a disgrace and threatened to lock my inheritance forever unless I married a sixty-year-old businessman to save her failing estate. At a high-society gala that same night, Aspen intentionally crushed my burned hand in front of the cameras, while Kieran stood by and dismissed me as a "mediocre assistant" who had overstayed her welcome. I stood in the cold New York rain, drenched in champagne and humiliation, realizing that every sacrifice I made for Kieran was a joke. I was a ghost in a penthouse that was never mine, discarded the moment his "soulmate" returned. To the world, I was just a placeholder whose time had run out. But Kieran forgot one thing: my father’s multi-million dollar trust fund unlocks the moment I legally marry. I didn't need love; I needed a signature and a shield. I walked into a discreet law firm and signed a marriage contract with a man I believed was the city’s most notorious, scandal-ridden playboy. I thought I was marrying a degenerate "beard" to buy my freedom and secure my revenge. I didn't realize the man who signed that paper wasn't a playboy at all, but Gaston Collins—the most powerful and dangerous man on Wall Street—and he had no intention of letting our fake marriage stay fake.

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

I sat on the edge of the examination table, the crinkle of the sanitary paper sounding like thunder in the sterile room. The doctor didn't even look at me as he confirmed the news: the pregnancy was over. My husband, Keyon, didn't answer my call. He just sent an automated text: "In a meeting." When I returned to our cold mansion, I found his iPad glowing with a message from his "muse," Katina. He was throwing her a secret gala tonight-on our third wedding anniversary. He told her he couldn't wait to escape the "boring" and "draining" atmosphere I created at home. Keyon didn't stumble in until 3 AM, smelling of Katina's perfume with a smear of red on his collar. When I handed him the divorce papers, he laughed in my face. He called me a "glorified housekeeper" with no skills and no future, promising I'd be back in three days begging for a subway ticket. He even bet his friends ten thousand dollars that I wouldn't survive a week without his name. He had his assistant cancel my credit cards and block my gate access before I even reached the end of the driveway. He wanted me to starve. He wanted me to crawl. He sat in his office, mocking the "desperate" woman who pawned her three-million-dollar wedding ring for scrap metal just to pay for a meal. I stood on the rainy curb, watching the man I had protected for three years treat my life like trash. He didn't know about the ultrasound I just threw in the bin. He didn't know that while he was calling me "dull," I was the one secretly writing the code that kept his billion-dollar empire from collapsing. As I slid into a cheap Uber, I opened a hidden, encrypted app on my phone. The screen refreshed to a dashboard for an account Keyon didn't know existed. The balance was ten figures long-the accumulated wealth of "Solaris," the world's most elusive tech genius. Keyon thinks he just evicted a parasite, but he's about to find out he just declared war on the only person who can hit "delete" on his entire life.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancĆ©e. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.
