Chapter 1 01

01

After having spent all day on the computer, I checked one last time if I was ready for tomorrow: everything was ready but deep inside I was afraid, so I decided to call Alicia. She answered almost immediately:

- "Hello Amé?" Yes, because everyone calls me Amé "How are you?

- Well, I'm a little afraid for tomorrow, aren't you?" I answered with a not reassured air

- I heard that the names of the students and the classes are posted on the school gate, do you want us to go and have a look?

Yes, as I changed high school my best friend made the choice to follow me in this one.

At the same time, I wanted to know who would be in my class but deep inside I felt a fear of not recognizing any name on the list and spending a year alone, I answered anyway:

- "It's okay, we'll see you in high school then?"

- "No problem,"

Indeed, I live ¼ hour from the high school which is pretty convenient. I only went there a few times, during the visit with the college and with my mother to carry administrative papers, so I don't know the way too well but it shouldn't be too complicated, I thought. I took my bag and started walking. After the first few minutes, I was already lost, so I took a good 5 minutes to get back on the right path and ran to make up for the lost time. I arrived at our meeting place out of breath, a little late, but well, I'm not going to hide from you that Alicia is used to it, and this is one of my first faults. There were about twenty students in front of the school, enjoying their last day of vacation and looking at which class they were in. I walked over to the sheet of names in C in the senior class. There was a boy right next to me that I noticed right away. He had a thin face, with brown hair and beautiful eyes. When he saw me, he smiled at me which made me shiver because he was so handsome. He was also looking for his class, running his finger down the list. When he found it, he stopped his finger just below his name and I could read: Ethan Parker, grade 3. He then pushed himself forward so I could look too. I subconsciously hoped that I had fallen into his class, and I was surprised when I saw "Amethyst Clark, grade 3. The boy then said:

- "Are you a senior in grade 3 too?

I nodded my head in response.

-At least I'm sure I know one person in my class!"

We chatted for a bit, and I found out that he had moved away because of his parents' work, so he didn't know anyone. I was happy to know that I was the first person he met here, but also reassured that I wouldn't be alone tomorrow. I was happy, almost to the point of forgetting about Alicia, which didn't last very long because I saw her running towards me.

- "I'm a senior, what about you?"

Suddenly, my face fell.

"We're not in the same class, Alicia."

She frowned and asked me:

- "What?! What are you talking about?!"

- "I told you, we're not in the same class!"

My face was red and I had tears in my eyes,

and she hugged me. Ethan stood back, embarrassed. I noticed him at once, and introduced this new acquaintance to Alicia, she greeted him and we left. I waved goodbye and he shouted at me:

- "See you tomorrow Amethyst!"

After she had comforted me and we were feeling better, Alicia said to me with a laugh:

- "And then you tell me you're shy, it's not even the first day of school and you're already meeting a handsome guy!"

I blushed and tried to defend myself:

- Oh no, he was just looking for his name in the list and we realized that we were in the same... "

- Yes, that's it! I know that one of them is going to have a lot of fun this year.

We laughed, she really knew me by

by heart!

- And if not, did you recognize some people in the list of your class ? " I asked her.

- Yes, there is Lisa, Justine, Mathieu and Alexandre.

- "Oh well, you won't be alone either!

- And you, apart from this Ethan, did you see any other people in the list?

- "To tell you the truth, I just looked up what class I was in and completely forgot to go look at my class name list!"

- "That's all you!" she laughs at me

and yes, you just discovered my second biggest flaw: dizzy.

It was 6:30 pm when I got home, this time I didn't get lost on the way, fortunately because tomorrow I had better not be late for school! I went straight up to my room and turned on my computer and logged on to facebook. 1 friend request, I'll let you guess who it is. I looked at the pictures of Ethan, he was really cute. He sent me a message and we talked for a good hour. He gave me his number - just in case, if we got lost or for homework - but obviously when I text him it won't be for homework! My mom called me to eat, so I said goodnight to Ethan, gave him a meeting place for tomorrow morning and then went down to the table. After dinner I watched a movie on TV and went up to my room. It was already 10:20 p.m. and I didn't want to be all surrounded the next day, so I decided to go to bed. This morning, it wasn't my alarm clock or the sunlight that woke me up, but a voice saying my name to try to wake me up. I turned my head to look at the time. It was already 7:20 a.m., my mother was standing in front of me

"I didn't see you come down from your room, so I got worried, I did the right thing! You forgot to set your alarm clock, right?"

Again my absent-mindedness played tricks on me, so I went to the bathroom and came out 10 minutes later. Once washed, I put on the outfit I had prepared a few days ago and ran to have my breakfast. It was 7:45 am, I brushed my teeth, did my hair and makeup in a hurry, then put my bag over my shoulder and headed to school. I was late, as usual, it was 7:52 and I had to run to get to school before the bell, plus I had forgotten my cell phone at home. I saw Ethan in the distance following the line to class, I called out to him:

- "Ethan! Wait!"

He looked to the sides, saw no one, and kept going. I ran up to him and patted him on the shoulder, he turned around and gave me a kiss.

- "I'm sorry I didn't make it to our meeting place but I got up late, I forgot to set my alarm clock..."

- "That's okay, don't worry!"

I was reassured that he wasn't mad at me. I started to catch my breath little by little. In the end, I hadn't had as perfect a start to the day as I had imagined, but I had still managed to catch up and no one noticed my slight delay. As we entered the room, Ethan and I decided to sit in the back of the room to be more discreet. I recognized a few faces, and I even had the pleasure of noticing the presence of good acquaintances from last year. Despite this, I didn't want to trade places with Ethan for anything in the world, I wanted to get to know him first and become his friend. After spending two hours listening to my homeroom teacher read the rules, explain how the school works and hand out our schedules, it was finally time for the 10 o'clock break. I went to the cafeteria with Ethan and we talked. I described a few people I knew from class and he told me a little more about himself. He was born on October 6, so he is 18, a year older than me. His favorite color is black and he has been playing guitar for 10 years. He lives 10 minutes away from me, on a street parallel to mine, so we can meet halfway from school which is pretty cool. He lives in a big house with a garden. Speaking of him, I could tell you a bit more about me! I live in a residence, so I don't have a personal garden but one shared by all the residents, and there's a pool so it's not so bad. I'm an only child and he has a brother Jared who is a year older and a 13 year old sister Lola. His favorite subject is sports and apparently he has pretty average grades in the other subjects. He also told me about his old friends and then started talking about a girl when the bell rang.

I spent four hours preparing a five-course meal for our fifth anniversary. When Jackson finally walked into the penthouse an hour late, he didn't even look at the table. He just dropped a thick Manila envelope in front of me and told me he was done. He said his stepsister, Davida, was getting worse and needed "stability." I wasn't his wife; I was a placeholder, a temporary fix he used until the woman he actually loved was ready to take my place. Jackson didn't just want a divorce; he wanted to erase me. He called me a "proprietary asset," claiming that every design I had created to save his empire belonged to him. He froze my bank accounts, cut off my phone, and told me I’d be nothing without his name. Davida even called me from her hospital bed to flaunt the family heirloom ring Jackson claimed was lost, mocking me for being "baggage" that was finally being cleared out. I stood in our empty home, realizing I had spent five years being a martyr for a man who saw me as a transaction. I couldn't understand how he could be so blind to the monster he was protecting, or how he could discard me so coldly after I had given him everything. I grabbed my hidden sketchbook, shredded our wedding portrait, and walked out into the rain. I dialed a number I hadn't touched in years—a dangerous man known as The Surgeon who dealt in debts and shadows. I told him I was ready to pay his price. Jackson and Davida wanted to steal my identity, but I was about to show the world the literal scars they had left behind.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.
