Chapter 1
Wendy Lee
The minute hand finally ticks, and it's 5am. Jumping out of the bed and rushing into the bathroom excitedly, I turn on the shower and chuckle softly. It's finally the day that I'm getting married to the only man I've ever loved all my life. I have never been this happy all my life, I guess it's the joy that accompanies getting married, especially with the one you love. It's the best feeling ever.
Just one year ago, I met the most handsome billionaire and the managing director of Thompson's group of company, Alex Thompson, at the wedding of my best friend. I didn't think that our meeting that day would eventually produce something good, but here we are today, getting married in a few hours and living the rest of our lives happily. Isn't it a miracle? I mean, this only happens in dramas, and to think that it happened to me in reality, I feel so special.
Grabbing my towel from the towel ring, I tie it around my chest and hurry back into the room. My friend will soon be here to get me dressed for the wedding, and I'm anxious already. A knock suddenly came on my door as soon as I step into my room, and I hurry to pull it open. Behold, it's Jesse, my best friend.
"Here comes the bride of the day. Come on girl, let's get you dressed for your big day," She quickly grabs my arm and pulls me into the room, slamming the door hard behind us. Don't be surprised, I haven't told you how crazy my friend can be. She's married, but still has the attitude of a child. That's how I am too, anyway.
She sits me down on the chair before the mirror and starts adding make-up to my face.
"Are we not done yet? I don't want to keep Alex waiting," I whine while closing my eyes. She has been adding different things to my face for over an hour now, and it's already disturbing me. I hope this turns out well, although I know this is her profession.
"And the finishing touch. We're done. You can open your eyes now," She chuckles softly, and I open my eyes. I know she's good at what she does, but I wasn't expecting this transformation. It's just so good.
"You like it?" She smiles at me, and I nod my head. I love the makeup. It's neither too much nor too light. Just moderate and perfect.
"Now let's wear your wedding dress," She hurries to my closet and throws the doors open, reaching out for the white big wedding gown hanging inside. Alex carefully selected the dress for me a few days ago from one of the best designers in New York. It was quite expensive.
After getting dressed, I check myself out in the mirror, and I think I'm good to go. My face suddenly went pale as the thought of Alex's family flash through my mind. I don't know if getting married to him is a good idea considering how much his family, especially his parents hates me so much. They were never in support of the relationship right from the onset, but I and Alex were persistent and ready to take the risk because we so much want to be together at any cost.
"Everything will be fine, Wendy. Just believe you can pull through this," I assure myself, even if deep inside me, I know that something is not right.
"It's time, girl. Let's go get you married," Turning my attention to Jesse whose hand is already stretched out and ready to lead me out, I place my palm on her hand and together, we stride out of the room. The car that's supposed to pick me up to the venue is already packed outside my apartment. We hop in the car, and it zooms off.
My name is Wendy Lee, twenty-six years old orphan living alone and striving for herself.
I got so lost in thoughts that I didn't know when we arrive at the church until Jesse's voice pulls my attention.
We both step out of the car, but I stop on my track when I spot Mrs. Thompson walking over to us with a deep frown on her face. I wasn't expecting to see her at the wedding venue, but I guess she couldn't stay back at home and not attend the wedding of her only son, even if she doesn't like me. My heart race rapidly as I hold on tightly to the flower I'm holding, my palms suddenly become sweaty.
"You have successfully managed to snuggle your way into my son's life, you shameless gold digger," She scoffs as she stops in front of me, and I bite my bottom lip. This is what I always get from her each time she sees me. I have no idea why she hates me so much. As much as I want to think that it's because I'm an orphan of both parents, I can't help but dismiss the thoughts. I mean, I wasn't the one that killed them, right? Or maybe because I am from a poor family. His son chose me, I never forced him into this relationship, and he was the one that asked me to marry him. Why's this woman being so mean to me?
"Mom..."
"You should never make the mistake of calling me that, you shameless whore and gold digger," She sneers at me, and I bite my bottom lip as tears well up in my eyes, but there's no way I'm going to cry, right? It's my wedding today, and I won't want anything to spoil my day for me.
"You're here, Wendy?" Alex's voice pulls my attention, and I raise my gaze to find him walking over to me, graced in a black suit. He's the most handsome man I've ever set my eyes on. The spark in his pair of hazel eyes melts my heart each time I look into them, his raven hair is clinging to his head with some strands curled up on his forehead. No one would believe that this handsome man with the perfect body shape of a model is thirty-one years old. He looks like he's in his early twenties.
His mom glares hard at me before she walks away angrily.
"Was my mom bullying you again?" He asks as he finally stops in front of me, and I shake my head as I smile at him.
"You're gorgeous," He always has his way of melting my heart, and one of them is his endless compliments on my beauty.
"Come on, let's go," He lock arms with me and lead me to the entrance of the church, while I follow him excitedly.
Standing before the congregation a few minutes later, my heart beats violently against my chest, but Alex's warm hand on mine makes me feel relieved a bit. Glancing at him and seeing the assuring smile on his face, I feel my heart slows down a bit.
"Do you, Alex Thompson, take Wendy Lee as your lovely wedded wife? To love and to hold, to cherish and to care for, in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, till death do you apart?" The priest asks, and he smiles widely.
"Yes, I do," The joy in his eyes as he makes the vow makes me feel like the luckiest woman on earth.
Do you, Wendy Lee, take Alex Thompson as your lovely wedded husband? To love and to hold, to cherish and to care for, in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, till death do you apart?" The priest turns to me and asks.
"Yes, I do," I finally make my vow.
"By the power vested in me, I pronounce you two husband and wife. You may now kiss your bride," The priest finally join us together forever. I can't be less happy. My heart stops beating when Alex pulls me close and slowly claims my lips, kissing me slowly and tenderly. I'm now married to the man of my dream...
