Iafleur never thought that touching a vampire's dead body would change her life forever. She was but a mere human who works as a Secretary to the Human Council in Eibrellion City. But her life would soon take a turn when she told them about the dead vampire she found. The Human Council had then given her a mission to find the long-lost Vampire Kingdom. Iafleur would team up with her longtime friend, Dracyan. But her journey to the bloody path also opened a doorway of romance for her and him. But things would only turn out for the worst when the rumour spread about the Eldentri planning to resurrect the Vampire Queen, the very being that everyone feared. What could a mere human like her do to stop the upcoming war? Would Iafleur even survive her journey towards death and save humanity or would she end up betraying them?

The Frozen Throne Chapter 1 Prologue

THE SUN HAD just set, and darkness almost instantly engulfed Eibrellion City. Had it not been for her sleeping under the tree for hours, she would have likely gone home before it was dark. Iafleur was awakened by a distant dog howling. Immediately, she recomposed herself to head home. The vibration of her telephone nearly startled her. She bared it out from her pocket and hundreds of messages from Dracyan bombarded her inbox.

She heaves a deep sigh and smiles afterwards. Her cheeks flushed red she could feel them burning. 'Indeed it is a wonderful feeling to have someone care for you like this.' she thought privately.

Graydel Woods was not that quite a wide area and Iafleur is certain to have followed the trail when she entered. But the path she is taking now does not seem quite familiar as it looks different from the path she had taken earlier.

She stopped on her track. "Oh, no. Am I lost?"

She pans her eyes in the surrounding area but everything seems to be looking the same.

"A wonderful place for me to be lost." She scoffed.

Iafleur still proceeded on her way despite being unsure of the path she had taken.

Other people could have perceived her situation as fearsome. Strolling in the woods in the dark was called unwise in the past before their kingdom was converted into a city. Creatures from the past that was believed to be monsters always loved to lurk in the dark to wait for prey. The unfortunate victim would likely be found the next day--- lifeless.

Indeed, the belief of vampires, werewolves and witches existing in Eibrellion City was quite popular with many people even until today. Iafleur works as a secretary to the Human Council and she has heard several stories and gruesome truths about vampires. Vampire existence was most popular in Eibrellion City. Though many still doubt Iafleur knew the truth.

Working as a secretary to the Human Council had given her the privilege to know things that many people only read in books.

Iafleur's reflection was halted when she felt again the vibration of her telephone from her pocket. She took it out, the caller's name was Dracyan. She answered it as she walked.

"Hello, my good friend." She greeted. "Why have you called at this hour? You must forgive but I am currently not at home."

"I know," he confirmed and revealed, "I'm actually standing outside your flat. Have you lost a finger or something?"

Iafleur frowned at his question. "What kind of a question is that supposed to be?"

"I called you many times and you weren't answering. You know a phone is made to communicate with other people when they're far away, right? Why didn't you answer? Where are you? You're making me worry."

It was Dracyan's last statement that made Iafleur stop on her track again. It was not the first that Dracyan would express his worry for her but hearing it coming directly from him is still quite very astonishing in Iafleur's ears.

She felt her cheeks warming up again, she could barely keep her lips from smiling. She suddenly felt embarrassed as though she was standing in a spotlight with everyone's eyes on her though she is alone at the moment. The sound of Dracyan's voice snapped her back into her present thoughts.

"Are you still there? Where have you gone? Hello!"

"I-I'm h-here!" she stammered. She cleared her throat. "Sorry about that. I'm actually in Graydel Woods. What were doing outside my flat by the way?"

"I just wanted to invite you for dinner. You know I hate eating alone in restaurants."

"I'm sorry to hear that. But why don't order takeout or something? I'd love to join you at dinner but it seems like I'll get home late."

"Why? What happened?" The tone of his voice expressed more worry.

Iafleur could not help but smile. But deep within her heart, she knew he worries for her because they were great friends.

She assures him, "No, I'm alright. I overslept after taking a nap. But I'm heading home so you don't need to worry. I'm a bit lost though but I'll find my way."

"Are you sure? Do you want me to pick you up where you are? I'm very good at navigation," he added confidently.

Iafleur chuckled. "I know. Thanks but no. I can manage. Besides, I'm taking my time to be alone and be surrounded by calmness before going back to that noisy city."

Iafleur heard his sigh from the other line. One thing she doesn't always adore about Dracyan is his respect for the decision of others.

He responded, "Very well. I'll see you tomorrow then. Be careful on your way home."

"I will. Thank you." After ending the call, Iafleur heaves a deep and loud sigh of disappointment. Things did not exactly go as she had expected.

"He didn't even persuade me."

Iafleur lifts her eyes. The sky is almost fully tainted with darkness. That might be the sign for her to find her way back and hurry home.

Eventually, Iafleur found the trail she took earlier and followed its path towards the entrance. Upon approaching the river, Iafleur could even hear from a distance the soft sound of the flowing water.

She cautiously takes her step on the slippery rocks protruding from the water. Upon reaching the other side, Iafleur's eyes suddenly caught a figure lying by the side of the river.

Iafleur instinctively went to aid her thinking that she might be endured and in need of help. The body was facing the ground and she had to flip her which didn't do her any difficulties.

But seeing the full features of her face made her stagger back in fear. Her eyes are wide open, blood-red. A wooden stake was plunged into her. Dark veins crawl all over her face.

Iafleur knew that they were legends from the past but she had not expected she would ever encounter an actual vampire in their modern day.

But that was not the only thing that shook her ground.

"W-what have I done!" she cried and scurries away.

Unbeknownst to her, upon her departure, the vampiress' blood-red eyes glowed and her body began to dissipate and turns to dust.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

I sat on the edge of the examination table, the crinkle of the sanitary paper sounding like thunder in the sterile room. The doctor didn't even look at me as he confirmed the news: the pregnancy was over. My husband, Keyon, didn't answer my call. He just sent an automated text: "In a meeting." When I returned to our cold mansion, I found his iPad glowing with a message from his "muse," Katina. He was throwing her a secret gala tonight-on our third wedding anniversary. He told her he couldn't wait to escape the "boring" and "draining" atmosphere I created at home. Keyon didn't stumble in until 3 AM, smelling of Katina's perfume with a smear of red on his collar. When I handed him the divorce papers, he laughed in my face. He called me a "glorified housekeeper" with no skills and no future, promising I'd be back in three days begging for a subway ticket. He even bet his friends ten thousand dollars that I wouldn't survive a week without his name. He had his assistant cancel my credit cards and block my gate access before I even reached the end of the driveway. He wanted me to starve. He wanted me to crawl. He sat in his office, mocking the "desperate" woman who pawned her three-million-dollar wedding ring for scrap metal just to pay for a meal. I stood on the rainy curb, watching the man I had protected for three years treat my life like trash. He didn't know about the ultrasound I just threw in the bin. He didn't know that while he was calling me "dull," I was the one secretly writing the code that kept his billion-dollar empire from collapsing. As I slid into a cheap Uber, I opened a hidden, encrypted app on my phone. The screen refreshed to a dashboard for an account Keyon didn't know existed. The balance was ten figures long-the accumulated wealth of "Solaris," the world's most elusive tech genius. Keyon thinks he just evicted a parasite, but he's about to find out he just declared war on the only person who can hit "delete" on his entire life.
