Hello, I'm death Chapter 1 New job costs a loss

Martin's POV

I dressed up in a suit I borrowed from a friend, it was my first day at work and I didn't want my dressing to leave a bad impression. Seeking for work hasn't been easy since I graduated from High School, it's been one useless paying job to another, I just hope this differs. I combed my hair up in an elegant style, looking at myself do my hairstyle in the mirror reminded me so much of my mother. I lost her to the cold hands of death two years ago due to my incapability to fund her hospital bill. I was taking care of her at house and I felt she was getting better which made me so happy. I woke up that faithful day and wanted to prepare breakfast when I found out that we were out of groceries. I sat on the stool in the kitchen, "this is another nightmare" I uttered bitterly. I dipped my hand down my pocket and looked at the few coin left on me, I shook my head and headed to the grocery store. I bought the few things my money could buy and went back home but what I found at home broke me, which is still affecting me till date. I met my mom in a pool of blood at the entrance of the kitchen. I sat down sobbing, only if I had money, she would have been alive and proud of this new job I just got. From the look of things, she might be hungry or thirsty and had slipped at the entrance of the kitchen, hitting her head against the wall and having no one to help her, she bled to death.

I hurried to the bus station so I don't miss my bus. I alighted at the company, Alien Life, and went in. The receptionist told me to wait for my turn and finally, it got to my turn. I adjusted my tie and walked like a gentleman into the office. The man sat on the chair, backing me but judging by his hand, he must be in list late 70s.

"You must be the new guy, Martin" he said, jolting me out of my day dream.

"Yes, sir. I'm Martin Judge."

"Do you know the job you were been offered?"

"Not yet, sir. I only know about the pay"

"Interesting! Are you okay with the pay or I should increase it?"

His question got me confused and thinking, what kind of job pays $300 and still offers to pay more?

"Are you there, Matin?"

"Sure. I'd love an increment but may I know the nature of the job, please?"

"There's an envelope on the table. Take it home, study it and let me know your response by Thursday."

I picked up the envelope and took a peep into it: it contained some paper-like documents and some cash.

"I'll get back to you on Thursday, sir"

"You may leave"

I left the company, stood outside and looked back at the name. I wonder what this man is up to. I headed back home, made myself a cup of coffee and took a nap. I woke up to the sound of my door bell, I went to get the door and it was Bella. Bella had been very supportive since I lost my mom. I met her two months after my mom passed away and she gave me a reason to live and start over again.

"Hey, what's up? You look dull, didn't you get the job?"

"You interrupted my sleep and speaking of the job, it was very strange."

Bella took the groceries she brought to the kitchen, made herself tea and sat beside me.

"What do you mean strange?"

"Firstly, I didn't see the face of my interviewer and he seems like an old man. Secondly, I don't know the nature of my job yet and he gave me an envelope"

"Have you gone through it?"

"Not yet!"

"What are you waiting for? Bring in, let's check what is in it."

"I got my bag and brought out the envelope, Bella took it from me and opened it.

"What's that?"

"Seems like you won a contract and some cash."

I collected the document from Bella and went through it. On the first page, it was written boldly on it, READ ALONE! I went through the remaining pages and the nature of my job happens to be an assassin master. I buried my head in my hand, Bella took the documents and read it too.

"What's wrong?"

"You can't see what is wrong? He wants me to head an assassin gang and you're asking me what is wrong."

"But I don't see any big deal in this, you're just an assassin master, not am assassin"

"Watch it, Bella. I'm not an assassin master and I will never be one. He can give his job to the thugs, I'm educated"

"Okay, then be ready to die in poverty. I'm leaving"

I sat confused, looking at the documents and thinking about Bella. I've always wanted the best of life for her but I couldn't provide that because of my financial instability, I understand why she's mad at me but I can't jeopardize my future. What if I get caught? Who will I say sent me? Someone I haven't seen?

Alien Life's CEO POV

"How was it?" I asked as the door cracked open

"He seems tone deliberating on it but I font think it would yield a good response"

"Really? He must be a poverty stricken man then. Anything else I should know?"

"He wasn't alone when he read it"

"What! Who was he with and what is their relationship?"

"He was with a girl named Bella and they seems to be lovers"

"I want her dead and if Martin refuses to take the job, do the needful"

"Yes, boss" he replied and left.

Today had been an hectic day for me, sitting all day alone. My driver took me home.

"Your meal is served, sir"

"I'll be there in a jiffy"

I dropped the news paper I was reading but my eyes got something catchy. It was Elizabeth, my old secretary. I took the piece of paper, hid it in my safe and went to the dinning. After eating, I took my meds and went to bed.

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.
