Needed by the Alpha Chapter 1 My chapter

Have you ever wondered what life will be like if you weren't born the way you were?

Have you wondered why people judge others for a situation they can't control?

If you haven't, then welcome to my life.

Welcome to my world, the world of Rabel Ichie Uzoamaka, the shunned maiden of Mabudazou.

"Witch", I hear a villager mutter as I passed her by,

"Ekwensu's(is an evil proprietor; he's the god of all things evil) child," another spat.

Without saying anything about that, I continue with my journey.

I've grown used to the way they treat me in our small town.

It doesn't help that I dyed my white hair black to blend in with others, but despite that, the villagers still single me out every time; every single damn time.

I pause at Mama Nneka's house to drop a herb for her; her daughter Nkechi is seriously down with fever.

A single dose of my Akwukwo Ede administered to her by me can clear her fever in a few hours.

Her mother is willing to take the medicines I drop on her doorposts, but she's not willing for me to directly treat her child.

The Miri use I've been giving her is enough to keep the fever at bay, but not fully heal her.

Walking past Mama Nneka's house after I dropped the medicine on their doorpost, I walk towards the house of my friend Soso.

I hope she isn't in Akwukwo if she is, I won't forgive myself for not being at her house earlier.

"Rabel!" Soso happily rushes towards me, enveloping me in a breath-stopping hug she smiles up at me, "I thought you weren't coming today," she pouts cutely.

I stoop low to embrace my best friend *if there's a word like that* she's the only one who doesn't fear me in the entirety of Mabudazou.

"How can I afford to miss your warm hug soso?" I poke her cute chubby cheeks. " You're my ray of sunshine; the only person I will sail the entire world just to be with you," I smile at her.

It's not an exaggeration of words when I say those.

She's the only person I will sacrifice both my safety for her.

She touches my dyed hair, "why did you change your hair colour? I like the other one better!" she looks at my said hair with hatred in her eyes.

I touch said hair, "I want to try out a new look." I lied to her for not the first time since I started hanging out here with her.

Likewise, I dyed my hair to make the animosity the villagers have toward me lessen, but instead of having the desired effect, it had the opposite.

She smiles like the kid she is, "it looks good on you though," she shrugs while giving me aside smile.

" Am glad you like it," I genuinely smile at her.

" Mummy said Ekwensu must have taken you back to his lair when I complained about your lateness today," she gently lay her head on my shoulder, "I was heartbroken when I thought you won't visit me today."

" Don't worry about that, Dearie; I won't miss a day without you."

I open my bag of goodies," guess what I brought for you today?" I smile more brightly than I've done since I last saw her yesterday.

It's always a game we play each time I pay a visit to their house.

"Achicha?" She guesses.

I shake my head, "no",

I grin more; this is my favourite part of my visit to their house.

"Kanda?" she makes another guess.

She must have guessed that since it was what I brought for her yesterday.

"No," I grin the more.

She frowns, "am tired of the game; I can't guess anymore, give me what you bought already." she pouts like the cute girl she is.

I brought out what I bought for her, "surprise!" I laugh at the look of surprise on her face.

"Really!" She squeals as she takes the puppy I made with a wooden stake, "I love it Rabel; thank you very much!", She twirls with the puppy in her embrace.

I grin with satisfaction.

I was afraid she won't like it when I saw it.

I decide to make the puppy when she complained about not having a play toy to play with.

Making the said puppy took me months to perfect; months spent under the sun.

My efforts weren't a waste if the person I made the effort for really appreciates it.

"Am glad you like it," I shyly said.

I'm not used to having compliments given to me, I'm well-used to words of hatred spat on me.

"Like it? I love it!" She hugs me as she dances up and down with unrestrained happiness.

Her happiness to me is like an aphrodisiac; it's a contagious one.

"Soso!" I hear the sharp voice of his mother from her doorposts.

Their house is like all other shackled buildings in the village.

Most of the houses in the village are built with stone (for those who have enough resources) and clay (for the poor masses).

I live in a stone building since my dad was one of the richest in the entire of Mabudazou; he was chief before his untimely death.

Soso and her family live in a clay building, for they don't have enough money to build a stone house.

Their houses were roofed with thatch, and not a speck of Nku was in sight.

Most of the thatch in their roof is already decaying lacking care; I won't be surprised if the house caves in on them before the Onwa(month) ends.

I've asked them to live with me since am the only one living in the house my dad built, but they refused for fear they might be bewitched.

People are afraid of what they don't understand.

They're afraid of things they can't control.

"Soso get back here this instant!"

HONEY MULLINS

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I've returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders-the man I was told was a crippled recluse-intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I'd cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent-the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower's security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy-Archibald's secret son-wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald's face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

I stood in the darkest corner of the Pierre Hotel’s ballroom, my cheap polyester dress itching against my skin while my wristband buzzed with a DARPA Priority Red alert. In front of the city’s elite, my fiancé Bryce Calloway took the stage, not to toast our future, but to publicly end our engagement and announce he was with my sister, Chloe. The room turned on me instantly, a hundred pairs of eyes pinning me down with pity and disgust as they physically backed away like I was contagious. When I returned home, my mother shattered a crystal vase at my feet, screaming that I was a humiliation and a "dropout" who didn't deserve a cent of the family fortune. Chloe and Bryce mocked me, laughing when I told them I had a mission with the National Security Agency, convinced I was either a pathological liar or a low-level criminal. They watched in horror as a black, unmarked military helicopter descended on our backyard to extract me, yet they still chose to believe I was being arrested for drug trafficking. They saw a pathetic girl who couldn't even parallel park, never realizing I was Dr. Nova Vance, the lead physicist behind the world's first successful fusion reactor. To secure funding for my research and gain a "fortress" of a name, I signed a thirty-day marriage contract with the arrogant billionaire Roman Knight. He treats me like a fraud, convinced I’m a gold-digger who failed out of college, while I quietly run global energy simulations from his guest bedroom. He has no idea that the "loser" he’s forced to live with is the same anonymous grandmaster who has been ruthlessly crushing him in online strategy games for months. "The contract is active," I told him, looking past his expensive suit. "But don't expect me to be your maid."

As I lay on the floor of our manor, bleeding out from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, I used my last ounce of strength to call my husband, Cole. I begged him for help, my vision blurring. But the only thing I heard was the clinking of champagne glasses and his mistress's giggle in the background. "Stop the drama, June," Cole snapped, his voice cold. "We're about to go on stage. Don't call again." He hung up, leaving me to die alone on the Persian rug while he accepted an award with another woman on his arm. I woke up in the hospital days later. My baby was gone. They had removed my fallopian tube. Cole finally arrived, smelling of expensive scotch and his mistress's perfume. He didn't hug me. He didn't cry. Instead, he leaned over my hospital bed, pressing his knee into the mattress until my fresh stitches tore open and bled. "You embarrassed me by calling an ambulance," he hissed. "My mistress, Alycia, says you're faking it. Clean yourself up." He left me bleeding again to go announce a $10 million donation to Alycia's "groundbreaking" medical research. I stared at the TV screen, numb. The research Alycia was taking credit for? It was mine. I wrote that patent years ago under a pseudonym. They thought I was just a poor, orphan housewife who needed Cole's money to survive. They had no idea I was actually a billionaire scientist hiding my identity. I pulled the IV needle out of my arm. A drop of blood fell onto the divorce papers I had been hiding. I didn't wipe it off. I signed my name right over it. Then I walked into the bank, reactivated my dormant account with $128 million, and bought the penthouse directly overlooking Cole's house. The mourning widow is dead. The avenger is born.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.
