Sheena Carlos, when she was young, did not have the same experiences as other people. She was never allowed to leave their mansion, and her parents even forced her to work as a maid. Sheena could not see the true beauty of nature as she grew up, she could not have learned to read or write without the support of her mother, Esme, and Tina would never have managed to learn the stuff she should've just learned.   That's Sheena Carlos' living inside their mansion, as if they don't consider her a child.

Life in Darkness Chapter 1 DARKNESS

"Daddy! I really like this dress! "

"It's great that you enjoy it."

Shanna smirked at me, so I turned away and went about my job.

What else am I doing here?

Because of my family?

Ha-ha-ha!

Sheena, you are hilarious.

Your parents don't love you, not even your twin. No one knows who you are. I was just shaking my head with my thoughts. Sincerely, I can't help but feel hurt.

Who would be happy if your parents didn't love you? They can't even look at me.

I've never even gone out with friends. I also lacked study skills. If it hadn't been for Mother Esme, I might not have learned to speak, write, or read.

I feel like I'm in hell.

I'm not permitted to leave the house. Because if I go out, they will punish me. They did not feed me for a week.

They are cruel to me, but I endure because I love them. But are they? Do they love me, or do they only love me once they hurt me?

They've been around me since I was a child. My mother, Esme, was the only person who looked after me and taught me proper manners.

Their rage only grew because of an accident in which they blamed me for something I did not do.

For nearly thirteen years, I've been through hell with them. I was on the verge of giving up, but I kept going.

I want to be free, free of their own world, free of their pain and misery. Because I know I don't belong in their world.

Just be patient, Sheena; You can be free, too.

"Sheena! The Israelis have arrived! They're handsome! " Tina said. My only friend, who is also Carlos' maid,

Along with everything else that my twin should do, I consider her a sister.

"Your twin is getting married?! That's really annoying! Shanna thinks she's a wonderful daughter, psh! "

I just laughed at her because, aside from Mother Esme, she is the only person who is aware of my life's problems.

"You two, hurry because Shanna's fiance is already there with his parents," Mother Esme said, her eyes fixed on me.

I just smiled at her, as if to say, "I'm fine because I'm used to it."

which is true. I'm always fine.

I wore a face mask and a hat, so no one could see my face. This is also what my parents advised me to do. They don't want anyone to know that Shanna has a twin, who is me.

I came out and bowed slightly as I served the guests. I could hear the visitor's laughter right away.

I took a deep breath and leaned over to Mother Esme, who was waiting on the side.

"When is the wedding?" Dad asked, a smile on his face.

He is the one to marry my twin.

How did I get to know him?

It's easy because I always hear Sir Ezrael coming from Shanna's mouth.

"I'm not sure, hey son?"

Mr. Ezrael called his son, Giovanni, who was staring at me.

Oh, my goodness!

I bowed right away. I'm terrified.

Maybe he saw my face and thought my parents would be angry.

"Hey, babe, Uncle called!"

He shifted his focus away from me and toward my twin. He smiled and turned to face everyone.

"Next month," he stated solemnly.

I took a deep breath and looked at them again, but it was a dangerous move because my father's gaze had already landed on me, so I simply bowed down.

I was afraid that I would be punished again.

My wounds are only now slowly healing.

"Wait, where's your twin Shanna?" questioned Ezrael's youngest daughter.

My eyes widened at her question, and almost both of my mothers, Esme and Tina, were taken aback.

I wasn't sure how I would react because I felt like my family was staring at me.

even though I froze.

How did she find out? She can't possibly know who I am.

"H-Huh? I don't have a twin, "Shanna replied.

I closed my eyes and clenched my fists.

I bit my lower lip so hard because I'm used to them not allowing me to see anyone. Because nobody knows who I am.

"Yes, she is the only child," the dad confirmed.

I can already taste the blood on my lips because I bit them hard in pain.

"No! Where is she? I just want to see her! "

No, please. Stop doing it.

"Don't be stubborn, Aphrodite!" yelled their father, but Aphrodite became even more irritated and left without saying anything.

"Sorry," Mr. Ezrael.

"It's okay, Shanna doesn't have twins, she's our only child," Dad said firmly, as they continued talking, but I knew Shanna and Mom disliked me.

It appears to be my fault once again.

Prepare for your punishment, ha ha ha...

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

For two years, I was the invisible force behind tech billionaire Kieran Douglas, convinced that our "private" romance was his way of protecting us from the tabloid spotlight. I managed his mergers, warmed his bed, and waited for a future that didn't exist. The illusion shattered at 6:00 AM when a Page Six alert debuted Kieran’s "real" romance with socialite Aspen Schneider. Before I could even process the betrayal, Kieran sent me a cold, professional text: "Order flowers for Aspen. Pink peonies. Her favorite." When I tried to walk away, my own mother called me a disgrace and threatened to lock my inheritance forever unless I married a sixty-year-old businessman to save her failing estate. At a high-society gala that same night, Aspen intentionally crushed my burned hand in front of the cameras, while Kieran stood by and dismissed me as a "mediocre assistant" who had overstayed her welcome. I stood in the cold New York rain, drenched in champagne and humiliation, realizing that every sacrifice I made for Kieran was a joke. I was a ghost in a penthouse that was never mine, discarded the moment his "soulmate" returned. To the world, I was just a placeholder whose time had run out. But Kieran forgot one thing: my father’s multi-million dollar trust fund unlocks the moment I legally marry. I didn't need love; I needed a signature and a shield. I walked into a discreet law firm and signed a marriage contract with a man I believed was the city’s most notorious, scandal-ridden playboy. I thought I was marrying a degenerate "beard" to buy my freedom and secure my revenge. I didn't realize the man who signed that paper wasn't a playboy at all, but Gaston Collins—the most powerful and dangerous man on Wall Street—and he had no intention of letting our fake marriage stay fake.
