Story written by Ajayi Esther

Chapter 1💗

Fontana's Pov

"Did I just step on you?"she asked with a smirk.

"I guess it's a no no"she said and walked away with her minions.

I massaged my hurting toe and winced.

It hurts 😢.

I sniveled and sat down then brought out an yoghurt box from my backpack.

I opened the lid and as I placed the rim of the bottle on my lips, someone deliberately bumped into my chair.

Causing my yogurt to spill around my desk.

I looked up at the person angrily.

" C'mon stop giving me that look,it wasn't intentional"she scoffed and also walked away with her crew.

I sighed dejectedly and brought out my handkerchief.

As I placed the pink soft cotton on the desk surface, someone decanted some water on it and the milk smeared all over my desk.

Oh, God!.

"Oh,my!,What I've I done?"she feigned innocent then smile mischievously before sashaying away.

Mama mercy!.

The bell chimes for lecture and our teacher came in almost immediately.

"Good morning to y'all"he greeted and the students drawl out a reply.

I stare at my desk and tears formed up in my eyes.

Why are they all doing this to me?

I whimpered and a tear slipped out of my eyes.

I've not known any peace since the day I've stepped into this school, especially this class.

Why did everyone hate me?

"Miss Fontana?"the teacher's voice jolted me out of my thoughts.

I looked up and adjusted my glasses.

"Come and solve this equation for us"he said.

I ball my hand in a fist...

I tried standing up but i can't as my butt was stuck on the chair.

What?

I tried standing up again and it was still the same.

Ahhhhhh!!

Could someone have....

Could someone have possibly set a gum on my seat before I sat down?.

Mama mercy!...

The teacher frowned at me and started walking towards.

He pulled me up and the students busted into laughter immediately.

What...

My eyes widened when I realized the chair was stuck on my butt.

What the...

I bend my head in embarrassment and sniffed in.

"You know what?, don't worry, have your seat. Perla come out and solve this for us"he said as he walked back to the front.

"Okay, sir"Perla, the girl who had stepped on me, replied.

I sat down and batted my lashes.

She moved to the front of the class and collect the chalk from the teacher.

She used the formula for the equation and she actually got it right.

"Good work"our teacher commented and she walked back to her seat.

The teacher went on teaching.

After some minutes,I was pressed and I decided to take an excuse to go to the restroom from the teacher.

I raised up my hand and he nudged his head towards me.

"Can I use the restroom?"I asked and stood up.

The students laughed and I turned to them.

They kept pointing at my butt as they laughed and...

God!,I totally forgot I'm stuck on the chair.

How I'm I going to ease myself.

Even the teacher laughed but he quickly control himself.

"A boy should help her remove that!"he said pointing to the chair that is stuck on my butt.

"Ew!"the guys made an irritably face.

But then,a guy wearing glasses just like me came and forced the chair down from my butt.

"Thanks"I muttered shyly and ran out of the class.

I headed for the bathroom and different thoughts were flowing in my mind.

Suddenly,I bumped into someone and I find all my thoughts flooding out.

"You bitch!,you are nothing but a bitch, why did you step on me?"I shouted.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.
