"Judie Ernst, the simple and pure girl, married Charles Shield, who was seriously crippled at 15, after being occasionally saved by him. Though Charles is physically disabled, Judie never simply regards him with sympathy, instead, she loves him and respects him as her reliable husband. However, each time her husband was out home, a masked man mysteriously appeared in her room and she was reluctantly embroiled with the masked man, which made her annoyed and unbearable as if she was cheating on her husband. Later, nevertheless, she's surprised to find out that the masked man is actually..."

Midnight Secret Chapter 1 Shocked

Click.

There was the sound of buckling a belt in Judie Ernst's ears. She frowned and rolled over, with a painful look on her face.

"Charles," she called her newly-married husband, subconsciously.

No response.

Rustling kept disturbing her.

Judie opened her heavy eyelids and saw the light of dawn. The spacious hotel suite was dim since the interior lights were all out. Near a sofa that was two meters away, stood a well-built man. He was putting on clothes with his back to her.

Judged from his movement, he was buttoning his shirt.

The man was tall. His back was like a mountain to Judie even he was far from her.

All of a sudden, Judie snapped out of her stupor and got up quickly from the bed. The movement stretched her wound somewhere and made her face go white.

However, she had no time to care about the pain.

"Who are you?" Her voice was trembling.

When she woke up, she found herself in a room with a strange man putting on his clothes, instead of her husband.

That made her breathless.

She was pretty sure that the man was not her husband Charles Shield, because her husband was disabled and used a wheelchair to get around. However, this man was standing upright before her.

Besides, his legs were exceptionally long.

The man stopped buttoning but did not look back.

After a few seconds, he rushed to the hallway, took a mask from the closet and put it on his face. He grasped the doorknob and was going to leave.

At this movement, Judie had already jumped out of the bed and rushed to grasp his shirt, "Who are you? Why are you in my room? Where is Charles?"

The profound-eyed man turned around and grasped her slim wrist. He looked down at her without bowing his head and said, "How do I know where your husband is?"

He spoke the language of Z country with an accent of M country. He spoke every word right, but they did not sound like a person from Z country.

"Let go of me!" She couldn't help but tremble and try to get rid of him when his extremely warm hand touched her skin.

Bang!

The man pushed her hard against the dressing mirror, then pressed her legs with his knees and grasped her wrists. She could not move at all.

"What are you doing, you jerk? Go away!"

The man's face got closer to hers. Judie was overwhelmed by his strong masculine scent. Her heartbeat accelerated. She wanted to get rid of him but was completely constrained.

As a married woman, she felt humiliated and shamed. Thus, she struggled harder.

However, that did not help at all.

"Come on! You were so tame last night. Why are you like a little wild cat with its paws out now?"

When she heard it, her mind went blank, and she ceased to struggle.

She raised her head and looked at him. He was tall. She was now barefoot, and her head could only reach as high as his Adam's apple. Under his chestnut short hair was a mask that covered two-thirds of his face, his sexy and chilly lips, and his masculine jaw.

Judie couldn't help but feel frightened by this masked face.

She took a deep breath and smelled a minty aroma, so light and refreshing.

It smelled like that of Charles.

"What did you mean? Why are you in my room?" She regained her consciousness.

"Ha!" The man smiled sarcastically, "Girl, I mean, the man in your bed last night was me."

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

For two years, I was the invisible force behind tech billionaire Kieran Douglas, convinced that our "private" romance was his way of protecting us from the tabloid spotlight. I managed his mergers, warmed his bed, and waited for a future that didn't exist. The illusion shattered at 6:00 AM when a Page Six alert debuted Kieran’s "real" romance with socialite Aspen Schneider. Before I could even process the betrayal, Kieran sent me a cold, professional text: "Order flowers for Aspen. Pink peonies. Her favorite." When I tried to walk away, my own mother called me a disgrace and threatened to lock my inheritance forever unless I married a sixty-year-old businessman to save her failing estate. At a high-society gala that same night, Aspen intentionally crushed my burned hand in front of the cameras, while Kieran stood by and dismissed me as a "mediocre assistant" who had overstayed her welcome. I stood in the cold New York rain, drenched in champagne and humiliation, realizing that every sacrifice I made for Kieran was a joke. I was a ghost in a penthouse that was never mine, discarded the moment his "soulmate" returned. To the world, I was just a placeholder whose time had run out. But Kieran forgot one thing: my father’s multi-million dollar trust fund unlocks the moment I legally marry. I didn't need love; I needed a signature and a shield. I walked into a discreet law firm and signed a marriage contract with a man I believed was the city’s most notorious, scandal-ridden playboy. I thought I was marrying a degenerate "beard" to buy my freedom and secure my revenge. I didn't realize the man who signed that paper wasn't a playboy at all, but Gaston Collins—the most powerful and dangerous man on Wall Street—and he had no intention of letting our fake marriage stay fake.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.
