THE GIRL IN THE DARK Chapter 1 BETWEEN SHADOWS

CHAPTER ONE

It was 5 am, the weather was cool. The bird flies high above the sky in search of their daily bread, Elena was awake looking through the window pondering "how the bird feeds with no one looking after them".

Mr.Mike and his beautiful wife Clara were happily married with no child, Mike who is a cop, and his wife a chef: Mrs. Clara is a respectful woman, calm, loyal and cheerful her work takes much of her time at home as she travels various countries to dispatch her duties.

Elena whose parents lost their lives in a fatal car accident has been with this couple for some months but has never been pleased.

Most times she became solitude while she soliloquies

ELENA'S POV

"I have lived my life to the fullest, yet my heart has never been filled with Joy. Ever since I lost my parents, life and death have become a shadow in which I live in-between".

"Look at the bird they have no one to feed them, yet they always get fed daily, I love to forget memories about my parents but it never stops coming".

While pondering on her experience she heard a knock at the door "who could that be she asked"?

Who is that?.

Is mike, sorry for disturbing may I come in?

Come in! "she ordered politely"

He walk-in with a smile seeing Elena sitting on the bed he gently sat on the couch.

Uncle Mike! Hope there is no problem, you wake up early to check on me I guess you have something to say?

Well, I guess so, I would have been at work but today am on leave so I decided to know if you are fine.

Uncle Mike, am always fine if anything bothers me you should be the first person to know about it.

"You know am not always around to check on you due to my work schedules and my wife has been complaining about your loss of appetite this day". Mike said.

Elena took a deep breath stood up from her bed to have a glass of water while she looks to the mirror beside her window:

"My appetite for food can never be regained for now because I have something important to feed on".

"And what could that be?" He curiously asked.

"My thought of course! I need to feed on them in other to erase my fears, pains, and memories. ever since I lost my parents I felt empty like a basket that can never be filled" she said while she gushes out tears!!.

Mike stood up and walked closed in other to console her

"I know how you feel, I also felt the same way. But you should let go of this memory it will never bring the dead back, crying always will never solve the problem rather it will create more problems considering your health is better than hurting yourself think about this!". He said as he walks out of Elena's room.

A FEW MINUTES LATER

Clara calls for Elena as she slams her door. Elena who was carried away by deep sleep left her door latched, no one could gain access to her room.

" Honey, what's it? I guess you should permit her to rest because she's going through a lot for now". Mike said.

"I don't know why she is still asleep, this is 8 a.m she hasn't done her daily chores". Clara said as she left for the kitchen to get some food prepared.

Elena stood up from her bed when she found out her aunt wasn't at her doorpost, she took a deep breath, wipe her tears off as she preside to the kitchen.

Elena! Elena!! What's the problem?

It's been months now since you came here, you can't continue with this sad face" Clara said.

"Well I guess you are right I will see to that, let me help you with the cooking," Elena said.

They both smile, as they get the food prepared and served, after having their meal uncle mike decided to put a smile on Elena's face as he aspires to take her out shopping.

AT THE BOUTIQUE

"Waw!!! This place is beautiful, have never been to a boutique-like this before." Elena exclaimed!.

"We are here to buy clothes not to give compliments" Mike profusely said with a smile.

..Elena pointed towards a gown.

"Uncle Mike, I love this red gown it will look good on me".

"Oooh!! Why not, I guess red is your favorite color if you love it then take it. Make a choice, and I will sort the bills" He said.

Uncle mike bought different items of clothes and underwear based on Elena's selection, they went out of the boutique suddenly someone yelled at him from a distance.

Mike! Mike!! Mike!!!.....

He looks in the direction as he traces the voice and saw someone trotting towards him.

"Who could this be?". He asked surprisingly.

" I think is someone you may know". Elena replied.

The Interrogations exceeded between Mike and Elena as they await the man's arrival.

Ohh!! Thank God I finally met you" He asked as he gasps heavily.

"Sorry may I know your name"? Mike asked.

"Am Jasper a friend of yours back then in Oxford college, I still have Memories of how Mr.Brownson whips the hell out of you for not doing his assignment and you ran out of the class down to the latrine in other to execute the pain". He explained

They both chuckled as they exchange pleasantries.

"Indeed you will never forget such memories because that day left a marked print on everyone's mind although it was a day I will never forget". He explained

"Oooh!! You never told me you have a grown-up daughter what's her name?" Jasper asked as he smiled looking at her.

"Sorry I didn't introduce her to you at first meet Elena she is my niece" He replied.

"Your niece!!, I thought she is your daughter you both look alike". He grins and exchanged courtesies with Elena.

I was once the princess of the Upper East Side, but now I’m just "debt wrapped in pretty skin." To keep my father alive in a federal penitentiary, I signed a contract I didn't fully understand. I thought it was about restoring my family's name, but producer Barnett Orr treated it like a bill of sale for my soul. Inside his limousine, the air smelled like gasoline and fear. Barnett didn't want a star; he wanted a victim. He bruised my jaw and ripped my vintage silk gown to shreds, laughing because he knew I couldn't fight back without signing my father's death warrant. "Don't forget who owns you, Felicity," he whispered. When he dragged me into Dewitt Knight’s penthouse party, I was a walking disaster. I huddled in Barnett’s oversized jacket, my lip bleeding and my spirit shattered. The elite crowd didn't see a victim; they saw a fallen girl selling herself for a role. A former rival poured red wine over me, and the room erupted in cruel laughter while Barnett told everyone he was just "testing my commitment." I looked up at the balcony, locking eyes with Dewitt Knight. He was a god in a bespoke suit, looking down at me with cold, lethal disgust. He didn't see the bruises or the desperation. He only saw a transaction he found beneath him. "So the rumors are true," he said, his voice cutting through the music. "The Aguilars really will do anything for money now. Even this." I was trapped between a monster who wanted to break me and a man who thought I was trash. No one cared that my father's life depended on my silence. When Barnett cornered me in a guest room later that night, his belt jingling like a death knell, I realized no one was coming to save a girl like me. I fought back with a crystal vase, shattering it against his shoulder, but I was drowning in my own terror. Just as Barnett lunged for my throat, the door was kicked off its hinges. Dewitt stood there, finally seeing the blood on the carpet and the map of purple bruises on my bare back. He chased the monster away, but I didn't feel safe. I locked the guest room door, wedged a chair under the handle, and slept with a silver letter opener pressed against my skin. When I crept into the kitchen at midnight and found him waiting in the shadows, I aimed the blade at his heart. "In this house, no one hurts you," he promised, his voice a low velvet rumble. But in a world where I had already been sold once, I knew that even protection came with a price I couldn't afford to pay.

Flash Marriage To My Best Friend's Father

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch-a titan of industry and my best friend's father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.
