I'd made him dinner after school, following the instructions he gave me exactly; or so I thought. Apparently, his meat was "too red." "I'm not a wild animal!" I recalled him saying. "Kimberly, get back up here and clean this mess!" Fred yelled from the top of the stairs. With a sigh, I slowly unwound myself from the tight ball I was in. I sucked in a breath as pain shot through my rib; I was sure it was broken, I crawled from my spot on the bed and across the concrete floor, holding in the whimpers threatening to escape my throat. It took time, but I made it out the door and up the stairs, only to look up into his cold, dark eyes. "Stop being a lazy brat and go clean up dinner!" He demanded. At least he didn't hit me this time. I nodded, dropping my eyes to the floor, and ambled my way to the kitchen in an awkward, painful gait. I made it to the sink and turned the water on. It spurted choppily from the nozzle for a moment before evening out somewhat smoothly. We weren't poor, necessarily, but we definitely weren't well off. Sometimes the heat didn't work, or the water, or the electricity. With just the two of us, Fred was the only one who worked. I would if I could - maybe then I'd use what I earned to get out of here. But that was far from happening. Fred controlled my life, every bit of it. No work, no friends, no food - except for certain occasions, I had to come up with my own ways to survive - and absolutely no leaving. He'd made that clear several times. I thought he'd just want me dead. I mean, no eating? Why not just kill me now? Obviously he didn't want me around. But then again, no leaving? It didn't add up. I flinched as water sprayed at me. I shook it off and continued scrubbing at the dish in my hands. That's what I was here for; his dirty work. I cooked and I cleaned, and as payment, I was always beating by him, no food, and the mental inability to speak. I was completely mute thanks to Fred. I probably could speak if I tried hard enough, but it's not like I had a reason to try. And it had been so long since I uttered a word, I didn't even know what it would feel like. I could run, set myself free. I don't think I'd make it far, but I could try. I sighed with my thoughts Even if I did run, he'd definitely catch me. And I didn't think my body could handle the beating that would come after a stunt like that. Besides, where would I go if I did run? I didn't have money, I didn't have a car, and I didn't have friends; Fred made sure of that. And if Fred wasn't the issue on that one, no one wanted to be friends with the "Mute Freak." My eighteenth birthday was in just over a month. That should mean in six weeks, Fred legally didn't have a hand on the wheel of my life anymore. But when that day came, I knew it wouldn't change anything. Not for me with the situation I was in. Turning eighteen didn't automatically fill my wallet; and that left me at the same place I was now: trapped in the palm of fred's hand. I shook my head, reeling in the tears about to fall. When I'd placed the last dish on the drying rack, I grabbed a hand towel and began drying everything I'd just scrubbed clean. Afterwards, I soaked a rag and wiped all the counters and the table, scrubbing some spots to make sure it was really clean. I didn't want Fred finding a sticky spot on the countertop. When the kitchen was finally spotless, I made my way back down to the basement to my room. The journey there was slow and painful; I had to bite my cheek several times to keep quiet. See, I could definitely make noise. My vocal chords worked perfectly fine - they had been unintentionally tested with cries of pain over the years. That's why I was very positive I could speak again if I wanted to, I just thought staying mute was for the best while living there with Fred. It wasn't much, but at least I had a bed It was pushed against the wall and only had one quilt on top - my only source of warmth at night. Next to my bed sat my backpack, where I hid the iPod my mom had given to me for my seventh birthday. It was super old, and just a shuffle I think, so all it could do was play music. I hid the rest of my memories of my mom under the bed in a little box. On the other side of the small room sat my dresser - if you can even call it that. It was a small wooden thing with a few drawers that held the few outfits I owned. A door next to that lead to the rundown bathroom. I grimaced as pain shot through my rib again I knew it was going to take a while to heal. I slipped off my blood-covered shirt and replaced it with an old cotton one. I did the same to my jeans, changing into a pair of old ripped leggings. I brushed my teeth and hair before setting my alarm on the iPod and getting in bed I just hoped tomorrow would be better. I barely registered the pain before my gut was punched, I doubled over and gripped my stomach. "What did you think you were gonna do? Hide it from me forever?" He yelled, kicking me in the ribs, hitting the injured one from yesterday. I cried out and didn't answer I honestly didn't know what he was talking about. "Answer me!" He boomed Tears streamed down my face and I opened my mouth, but nothing by came out. Angered, Fred kicked me again. And again. "What, were you gonna run away with him? Leave me like your mother did?" I struggled and tried to scream, but nothing came as he pulled me to my feet by my hair. I wanted to snap back. I wanted to say that Mom didn't leave us, that she died ten years ago and there was no way of getting her back. But I couldn't, I haven't been able to answer back since I was seven years old. And he knew this, yet he wouldn't stop beating me up for not uttering a word back. Slap! "Answer me, Kimberly! What were you doing with him?" I raised my hand to my throbbing cheek and shook my head. I knew what he was talking about now. Today at school I had been assigned to work on a project with this kid in my class. Unfortunately for me, the kid was a boy, and now Fred had the idea that I was going to escape and run away with him. Or that I was sleeping with him Neither of those accusations were true, but even if I could tell him that, he wouldn't believe me. When I still wouldn't make a sound, he continued his beating, swearing in my face and calling me disgusting names. I tuned it all out and closed my eyes, wishing I'd pass out and turn the world to black. * * * I scrunched up my face as my eyes fluttered open. Everything hurt, and I raised an arm to clutch my chest in pain. My first rib injury was ten times worse and a few more were added. I could smell blood and saw multiple deep bruises on my arms and legs. I was sure there were more on my neck and face - places I couldn't see without a mirror. Tears leaked from my eyes as I remembered last night. Sitting up, I found myself sitting in the same spot I passed out in. On the floor, in the middle of the living room. I cautiously sat up, wincing in pain, only to freeze when Fred entered the room. "Ah, I see you're awake." Not seeming to care I was sitting in my own blood and sporting obvious injuries he had caused, he barked: "pack up, we're leaving in less than two hours." I nodded, not surprised. Whenever I got close - or what Fred thought was close - to someone, we had to move. He would never explain why, but I knew it was because he became afraid of people getting suspicious and finding out what goes on behind these walls. I painfully crawled to the stairs and slowly made my way down. I only had two hours, which meant packing was going to be incredibly difficult. I made it to my room and pulled out the suitcase from under my bed. It was small and black, but it could hold everything I owned. I moved across my room, taking things out of drawers and from my bathroom, making a pile next to the suitcase. When the bathroom and the dresser were empty, I sunk down to my knees and started folding the clothes, placing them neatly in the luggage. I filled the rest of the space with bathroom necessities and was about to close it when I remembered the box. I slid it out from under the bed and untied the gold ribbon that kept the lid on. Inside was a stack of photos and hand written notes, along with a wolf pendant attached to a thin chain. My mom had left that in an envelope under my bedsheets the day she disappeared. I was only in second grade, and I don't remember much from that day. The first half was a blur of getting picked up from school early, to an accident that left me passed out in the car. I'd woken up at the police station and my father had come and picked me up. I remembered him weeping as we got the news that Mom and Ave were gone and had most likely died in the crash. When we got home, I could tell he was incredibly upset. So, I ran over to give him a hug, but instead of being hugged back like I was expecting, he shoved me off, tossing me to the floor. He'd never acted this way before, so I ran to my room. I meant to climb under the covers of my bed to hide, but when I pulled the sheets back, a tiny envelope was tucked under them. I'd pulled it out and when I unfolded it, the necklace had fallen to the floor. That was the last thing she'd ever given me. I never found anything that explained what had happened or what the necklace was for. I assumed it was just something pretty she thought I'd like. But thinking back on it now, it was almost as if she had been planning something. But for the life of me I couldn't figure out why she had left a gift in my bed, only to pick me up from school to take me with her. It didn't make sense. In the days after their death, Fred became worse and worse, less of the father I had known. Chat MAXWELL on WhatsApp to be added to his story group. That was when I'd stopped talking, when the beatings started, and when I'd stopped referring to Fred as Dad. I slid a glossy photo out from the box and stared at it, tears forming in my eyes. The picture showed Fred and my mom, with smiles on their faces as they gazed down at the bundle my mother was holding. Little six year old me was looking up at them with sparkling blue eyes. Happiness jumped from the image and that just made the tears fall harder. I missed my old life, where I lived happily with my family. Before Mom, my sister, and I got in an accident that left me here alone. Before everything was ruined. I gripped both sides of the photo and ripped it right down the middle. One half now showed my mom, my newborn sister, and me. The other half was Fred I glared at his half of the photo. He didn't deserve my mom if he was going to become this when she died. I didn't do anything to deserve the torture he's put me through for nearly ten years. I decided he shouldn't deserve to be in that picture. He didn't even deserve to be my father anymore. I tied the ribbon around it and gently placed it in my backpack. I zipped up the suitcase and grabbed my backpack before heading to the stairs. To say I struggled up the stairs is an understatement. I had to pause multiple times trying to get up and eventually Fred came down and picked up the suitcase with ease. He rolled his eyes when he saw me panting as I tried to drag it over each stair. "I'm surprised you're not stronger than this." He muttered under his breath, but I still heard it. What's that supposed to mean? Eventually I made it to his truck and placed my bag on the floor before climbing in. I buckled my seatbelt as he did the same and then we were off. I stared aimlessly out the window as the trees and houses wizzed by. I didn't know where we were going, Fred would never tell me these things. It only took a half an hour before I relaxed my head against the seat's headrest, trying to fight the itch to sleep. I was terrified of relaxing near him. Soon, my eyes became too heavy and sleep took over my fragile body. ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ Some time later I woke up to find three hours had passed. I was glad, I needed the sleep really bad. Surprisingly, Fred didn't say anything and had just let me sleep. The radio was on now, some country station playing quietly. I turned my head to the window and noticed the forest we were speeding past seemed thicker than the woods near our old house. If I were smarter, I would have fought harder to stay awake and discover where we were heading. It might've helped me get away at some point. Then again, maybe not. I'd never know now. Movement caught my eye and I blinked, trying to focus on it. We were going too fast for me to see it clearly, but I could've sworn it was some kind of huge, dark, furry animal. A bear maybe? No, that didn't seem right. A wolf? I doubted it. Wolves can't be that big. I blinked again and it was gone. Fred hadn't seemed to notice anything and was silently staring at the road in front of us. I searched the forest for anymore signs of movement similar to what I saw, but gave up after fifteen minutes of nothing. Another half an hour passed before we were getting off the highway. Fred turned down a narrow road with small houses lining each side. But the houses were far apart, trees filling the space between each structure. It didn't take long until we pulled into a driveway. I looked up to see a little one story house that was just barely big enough to not be considered a trailer. A couple windows were boarded up and the yard was unkempt. It looked like it had been vacant for a while. There wasn't a garage so Fred stopped at the top of the driveway and turned the truck off. I sighed and got out as well, slinging my backpack over my shoulder. Fred grabbed his luggage and left me to deal with my heavy suitcase on my own. I stumbled a little as I pulled it from the backseat and tried to lower it to the ground. I nearly dropped it on my foot. I slammed the truck door and hauled the bag inside, nearly tripping a few times on the way. I entered the house and stopped, glancing around. Straight from the front door was a small living room. An old couch was the only piece of furniture there. To the right was a tiny kitchen and a small round table with three chairs. To the left was a hallway which must lead to the bedrooms. I did notice there was no basement, which meant I'd get a real room this time! I pulled the suitcase down the hallway. There was a bathroom to my right and an empty bedroom to my left. Another door was at the end of the hall, but it was closed, Fred claiming it as his. I entered the empty bedroom to find a twin bed already set up in it. It was parallel to the window and a small closet was across from it. I dropped my bags to the floor and sat on the bed. It was covered in a fitted sheet and one pillow sat on top, but that was it. I sighed and knelt on the floor, unzipping my bag. I looked up and held my breath. No noise had come from Fred's room so I guessed he was too tired to deal with me at the moment. I exhaled a breath of gratitude to whatever might be watching from above. But just to be safe, I got up and closed my door softly, in case he did feel like coming in and yelling at me. Returning to the suitcase, I opened it up and took out my ragged quilt. I threw it on the bed and started taking out clothes. There was no dresser or even a few drawers here like I had in the last house, so everything I had found a place in the closet. Shirts I hung up and pants I stacked neatly on the shelves. Undergarments I left in the suitcase, which I placed on the floor in the closet. Chat MAXWELL on WhatsApp to be added to his story group. I moved to my backpack, taking out the box and leaving my iPod and school supplies in it. I silently groaned to myself as I remembered school was tomorrow. Another new school meant more embarrassment, more questions, and more overly-friendly people. I hated it, but I knew it was the way it had to be. The bed frame sat too high for me to be able to hide a box underneath and since I didn't live in the basement, I'd need a better hiding spot. The last thing I wanted was for Fred to discover this and take this away from me too. I scanned the room but nothing seemed like a good hiding place for it. In the end, I stashed it on a shelf in the closet, behind some jeans. I decided not to make dinner that night. I knew if Fred needed food, he'd come get me to make him some and I'd suffer the consequences later. But at that moment, I was too exhausted to do anything else. I climbed under the ratty quilt, the only form of cover and comfort I owned, and gave in to the darkness that was calling my name. It was my first day of school in this new place To say I was dreading it is an understatement. But at least I could get away from him for a little while. I kicked the quilt off and slid out of bed. I reached into my backpack to turn my iPod alarm off and scanned my closet for something decent to wear. Fall hadn't quite shown itself yet, but I had to wear long sleeves and pants, or people would see how beat up I am. And that would be bad. I didn't own very much, for obvious reasons, so I dug out an old hoodie and a pair of overused jeans. For shoes: I decided on black boots that were on their way to falling apart. But they were easily the nicest pair of shoes I had. I grabbed bathroom stuff from my suitcase. I opened my bedroom door slowly, effectively making no noise, and darted across the hall to the bathroom. I gazed into the mirror as I brushed my silky blonde hair. I noticed a black circle around my left eye as well as a fading red mark on my cheek. Both would need to be covered with makeup I pinned half of my hair back with a clip and left the rest down. Then I got started on makeup. I put on mascara, as usual, but I also had to add slight eye shadow to hide that nasty black eye. I applied blush over my usual concealer to my cheeks, covering up the red mark. How do I own this stuff? The answer is Fred He bought me the bare minimum I'd need to cover things up. At first he wouldn't, but when he realized makeup would be the only way to hide without looking even more suspicious - he agreed and got me concealer, blush, one color of eye shadow, and a few brushes. Back when I was confident and stood up a little to Fred - even if it was just in writing I convinced him to get me mascara as well by claiming you can't wear all this other makeup without mascara. I'm surprised that even worked, but I'll take what I can get at this point! My entire makeup supply is in heavy need to be replaced, but I doubt I could get that to happen any time soon. Pulling myself back to reality, I checked myself over in the mirror. Satisfied with how my face looked, I headed to the kitchen and pulled out a frying pan, two eggs, and two pieces of toast. When I finished making the Bullseyes, I placed them neatly on a plate and filled a glass up with orange juice. I set them on the wooden table along with a fork. I heard Fred's bedroom door open and went to the front door, ready to leave. That's when I remembered I'd left my backpack in my room. Crap! I pressed myself up against the wall as his footsteps got closer. I held my breath and watched as he walked right past me and sat down at the table. I sighed quietly in relief before dashing to my room and scooping my bag up and over my shoulder. I crept back out and as soon as Fred looked down to his food, I made a break for the front door, getting out unnoticed. I relaxed and walked along the side of the road, ignoring the strange looks from the people that drove past me. I didn't know what time the bus came, if a bus even came to this street, but it was only 6:30, meaning I was probably early anyway. So I just walked. I saw a lady probably around Fred's age walk out of a little yellow house with a dog. Hopefully she could tell me the way to the school. Knowing I couldn't talk to her, I arranged my features on my face to look really confused. I even turned in a small circle, looking around as if I lost the way. I heard her approach me and stopped. "Are you lost, dear?" She asked while the dog sniffed me. I shrugged. The lady looked at my backpack and said, "Oh! Are you looking for the school?" I nodded and she smiled, raising her hand to point down the road. "Just follow the road that way and eventually you'll see a sign with arrows telling you where each school is. You can't miss it." I gave her a smile, hoping she understood my gratefulness. She returned it along with a wave and tugged her dog away. I pulled my backpack off and unzipped it, taking out my iPod and earbuds. I opened it to my Taylor Swift playlist and smiled as Our Song came on. I placed the device in my pocket and slung my bag back over my shoulder, following the direction the lady pointed me in. It took me fifteen minutes of walking before I saw the sign she told me about. An arrow pointing forward said Elementary School, the arrow pointing left said High School and the arrow pointing right said Middle School. I turned left and walked for another five minutes before I arrived at the school. In big letters over the double-door entrance read "Forrest Hills High School." I pulled the front door open and was surprised to find the halls mostly empty. A few students wandered around, talking to their friends, but other than that, it was quiet. I followed the very obvious directions to the Office and walked in. A short lady with curly white hair and bright green eyes looked up at me, a kind smile on her face. I returned it with a small smile of my own and walked over to her. "You must be Kimberly ------, am I right?" I gave her a nod - not bothering to correct her pronunciation and she reached into her desk drawer. She pulled out a file with my name on it. "I heard you would be coming today. Here's your schedule with your locker number and combination on it as well as a map of the school. Have a wonderful first day!" I nodded once and gave a small wave as I left. I opened the file and saw my locker number was 213. I figured that meant second floor, so I turned to the map and searched for the stairs. I set off down the hallway, keeping my head low and trying not to draw attention to myself. I could feel stares on my back as I passed the whispering students. I guessed a small town meant everyone knew everyone, and I would be the obvious new transfer. Great. Ignoring them, I headed to the second floor, scanning the lockers for my number. I closed my eyes and leaned against a random locker, feeling hopeless. I'd been walking up and down the halls, looking for 213, and I just couldn't find it! "Need help?" A voice asked.Chat MAXWELL on WhatsApp to be added to his story group. I jumped and turned my head around. I looked up to see a guy with fairly tan skin and grey eyes. His brown hair was styled in a way that it was swept to the side while at the same time, it stuck up. He gazed down at me with a smile. I sighed and nodded. I knew if Fred found out, he would probably kill me, but I didn't care if he did. Okay that was a lie. I did care if Fred found out because I would get a beating for it, but that wasn't what mattered right now. All I cared about was finding my locker at this point. "Can I see?" The guy asked. I gave him a small nod and handed him the paper with my locker number on it. He examined my paper for a second. "All the one-hundreds and two-hundreds are on the first floor, not the second. I'll show you where that's at." I gave him a weak smile. He smiled back, "Even better! You have Mrs. Holland for homeroom! One of my friends is in that class. I'll make sure to tell her to look for you!" I gave him a nod, not sure what else to do. He gestured for me to follow and I went bounding after him as he went down the same direction I came from. I had the feeling that if Fred knew about the guy I met and the people I might meet, I would be in so much trouble. But I couldn't think about that right now. A girl with bouncy brown hair sat next to me, smiling so big it almost reached her ears. "I'm Jaycee," she introduced herself. Ah, so this is who Cole told me about. "You must be new, 'cause I don't recognize you, and this town is really small." I gave her a small smile and pointed to my name at the top of my file. We went through the same thing I did with Cole. Eventually she said my name right and told me she knew we were going to be great friends. I grimaced. I wish I could tell her that can't happen. "What other classes do you have?" I handed her the file and she looked through it. "Ooh! We have Homeroom, English, and Gym together. The rest you're on your own." I looked at her, confused. What about Cole? As if she read my mind she said, "Cole, Dexter, Kota, and Sydney make up the rest of our group of friends. You might have a class with them but even if you do, they're likely not to show up. You'll get to meet them today at lunch, though! Oh, and my little sister Eva. She's a freshman." I didn't answer, wishing I could make friends with them. I really hated Fred when it came to things like this. It also made me really miss my mom. "So where'd you come from? What's your family like? When did you move here?" Jaycee bombarded me with questions. I sighed, she never stops talking, does she? I felt bad ignoring her the rest of the period, but I didn't really have any other choice. Finally the bell rang and I shot up and out of my seat like a bullet. I entered the crowded hall and ignored Jaycee calling after me. Soon enough, I got swept along by the crowd and she couldn't see me anymore. I found my next class easily enough and slid into a seat just as the bell rang. I pulled out a notebook and listened as the teacher droned on and on about some ancient Egyptian village. By the time lunch came, I was just ready to go home. I didn't have money for lunch, and obviously couldn't bring my own lunch, so I ended up going outside and sitting against a tree. I pulled out earbuds and a book and tuned out the rest of the world. Movement close to me caught the corner of my eye and I looked up to see Jaycee crouched down in front of me. "Why are you out here?" She asked, lowering my book. I shrugged and then widened my eyes when I saw she wasn't alone. Behind her stood Cole, a guy I didn't recognize with dark skin and a kind smile, and two girls. Jaycee glanced behind her. "Oh, these are my friends I mentioned. There's Sydney," She pointed to the first girl, who's shoulder length blond hair was pulled back halfway with a pretty clip. Sydney gave me a small wave, but didn't smile. It seemed more like she was there because Jaycee made her come. "And Eva, my sister." Now that she pointed it out, the second girl looked very much like Jaycee, just younger and with darker hair and not as much of a tan to her light skin. "And Dexter, and then you know Cole." I gave them a small wave, cursing myself for interacting so closely with them. If Fred finds out... "Kota's inside, so you can meet him if you come with us." Jaycee continued. I shook my head. I appreciated their kindness, but I couldn't go with them. I looked back down to my book. "Kimberly, please?" Jaycee pleaded. "I can tell you're a sweet girl under that shell, and we want to make you feel as welcome here as possible!" I swallowed and closed my eyes, leaning against the tree. Why couldn't they just leave me alone? Usually people just ignored me, weirded out by the "mute freak." So why were these guys different? I heard a snort and opened my eyes. Jaycee stood up and whirled around. Apparently the snort had come from Sydney, because Jaycee got in her face, venom laced in her voice. "Shut it, Syd! If you don't want to be a nice person, go ahead and leave! I don't care what Kota said, I can do what I want." Chat MAXWELL on WhatsApp to be added to his story group. Dexter rolled his eyes. "Have fun explaining this then, don't forget he's your Alpha!" I tilted my head, nervous but intrigued. Alpha? What did that mean? My silent question went unanswered, though, when a new voice joined the conversation. "He's right, Jaycee. You can't just disobey an order like that. She's a rogue!" There they go again. What are they talking about? Alpha? Rogue? That wasn't it, though. The newcomer's voice was deep, sending a shiver down my spine. I peered between Jaycee's and Cole's legs to see who it was. The guy was tall and muscular, but not huge He had dark brown hair and deep green eyes. Jaycee shifted her feet a little and I caught his eye. The world stopped, everything disappeared, leaving just me and him. I couldn't hear anymore of their argument, all my focus was on those green eyes. "Kota" I heard my mother scream from the hall. I grumbled something incoherent and grabbed my backpack. I don't even get why I have to go to school anyway. I just turned eighteen, meaning I was just passed the title of "Alpha of the Shining Moon Pack" The only thing I needed was my Luna, not school! I hurried down the grand staircase and Cole, my Gamma, passed me an apple. He saw my grim expression and laughed. "Don't be so grumpy, maybe something actually interesting will happen!" I rolled my eyes. "Yeah right." I put the apple in my bag and hopped on my bike. "Really, Kota?" Sydney asked. "You would rather get on that death machine than ride with us?" I glared. "Hey! My bike is not a death machine!" Jaycee pokes her head out the truck window. "Well I'm pretty sure the definition of a motorcycle is death trap, so..." I rolled my eyes. "No it's not, you guys are just cowards!" They all grumbled and shut the doors to Dexter's truck. Dexter started it and drove off. I chuckled and started my bike. Dexter was my Beta and Jaycee was his mate, making her the Beta Female. Cole and Sydney were also mates; they were the Gamma pair. I was still looking for my mate. I knew she was out there somewhere, I just didn't know where to look. I'll admit I was a little envious of my friends. In the werewolf world, you can find your mate when you reach the age of sixteen. Since we all grew up together, the minute they each hit sixteen, they knew they were each other's mates. I was like the seventh wheel. I just hoped I'd find mine soon. I arrived at school and parked my motorcycle in my usual spot. I set it on its kickstand and headed inside. Already, I knew something was different. I didn't know what, but I intended to find out. I was walking to second period when it hit me. The smell of a rogue. A rogue wolf had entered my territory and was in this school. I growled under my breath. "What's wrong?" Dexter asked, hearing the sound. "Don't you smell it?" I responded. He looked confused. "No, what?" "The rogue!" His eyes widened and he took a deep breath. "You're right! I can barely smell it, but it's there! What are we going to do about it?" I thought for a moment. "For now, just ignore it. Warn the others to stay away from it too, I don't want it to be near my pack members. I'll deal with it tonight, after school." He nodded, understanding. We couldn't cause a scene in front of these humans that attended the school. The rest of my classes until lunch went fairly slow as I spent most of them thinking about what to do with the rogue. The bell rang and I shot up and out of my seat. I headed to the cafeteria and sat down at our group's table. I waited and waited, but a half an hour into lunch period none of them had shown up. It was strange. I got up and took a deep breath, trying to pinpoint their scents. When I did, I set off on their trail. The scents led me outside and I soon spotted them, crowding around a tree. I growled and stormed over. "-don't care what Kota said! I can do what I want!" I caught the last of Jaycee's words as she yelled at Syd. "Have fun explaining that to him, he's still your Alpha!" Dexter snorted. Jaycee visibly paled a little, especially when she saw me standing behind them. "He's right, Jaycee." I said, making my presence known. They all started slightly and whirled around. "You can't just disobey an order like that! She's a rogue!" Jaycee growled, making my wolf growl back, upset that she was disrespecting us. "She's a nice girl though!" Sydney snorted again, "How do you know? She doesn't answer anything you say!" I growled, trying to break up their argument. Where was a Peacemaker when you needed one? Jaycee turned to fire something back and that's when I saw her. Her electric blue eyes were wide with despair and confusion, her blonde hair flowed down her back, matching her pale skin. I locked eyes with her and the world stopped turning. Everything was gone, like I sunk into this peaceful abyss. I could no longer hear Jay and Syd's fighting, or Cole trying to break it up. It was just me and her. My wolf immediately knew she was ours, and instinctively wanted to claim her. Chat MAXWELL on WhatsApp to be added to his story group. So without thinking, a possessive growl erupted from the back of my throat and one word tumbled out. "Mine!" In hindsight, I probably should've controlled my wolf better, as this just made everything worse. I felt my eyes shift to black, showing my wolf side, and the girl in front of my scrambled up, fear written all over her face. She opened her mouth and made the sound I least expected to hear. A scream. It was high pitched and scratchy, as if she hasn't used her voice in some time. And then she ran. She left her bag, her book, and her iPod on the ground and darted off, not looking back. Confused, I gained control back and looked at my friends. "Nice going, man!" Cole said sarcastically. "You managed to find your mate, scare her half to death, and get her to use her voice all in the span of only thirty seconds!" I growled and he just rolled his eyes. "Now what?" I asked. Jaycee smacked me on the arm. "Go after her! Follow her scent home." I nodded and put the girl's iPod and book in the backpack and picked it up. "Whats her name?" "Kimberly." They all chorused back. I nodded and dashed after my mate. I couldn't lose her now that I'd just found her! My eyes widened and I turned around abandoning my things and bolting. I ran like I've never ran before, my legs burned but I ignored it and pushed on. I didn't look back as I headed down the street, remembering my way back to the house. For a split second I worried about what would happen if Fred was home, but then an image of that guy's black eyes came back and I continued to run. A part of me, deep inside, told me to turn around and go back to them. That they were what I needed. I tried to convince myself I was running because of his eyes, but the truth stuck, not letting myself use excuses. I knew the real reason I was running was because I'd used my voice for the first time. In nine years. And they'd all heard it. It wasn't the same as talking I guess, but still. I knew tomorrow would bring questions. Questions I couldn't and didn't want to answer. They all knew my voice worked now, which was going to cause a problem for me. I heard them shout my name a few times, but I soon was out of earshot. My thighs began to throb and I felt a growing cramp appear in my side, but I decided not to care.... No way was I stopping until I made it home. And I didn't. I kept running until I burst through my front door, slamming it shut behind me. What I didn't expect was to see Fred sitting there. In the living room Eating a sandwich. Well, crap. He looked up at me and narrowed his eyes. "Kimberly." He said slowly, his voice like ice. "What are you doing home?" I gulped and pulled at a strand in my hair, not meeting his eyes. In a flash, he was in front of me. "Answer the question, Kimberly. What are you doing out of school?" I blinked and looked up at him, jumping backwards when I saw how close he was. His eyes were dark and menacing, while his voice was cold and calm, which was almost scarier than when he was screaming at me. I shook my head. Didn't he get it? I haven't answered a question in nine years! When is he going to notice that he is who made me stop talking? That I probably won't ever talk again? He took a step towards me, making me flinch a little. "Use your voice, girl. I know it works!" I widened my eyes and opened my mouth, but only silence followed. Suddenly my back hit the door. Hard. I cried out as his fist made contact with my face. I sunk to the floor, raising my hands to block my face. Unfortunately, that did nothing, as he harshly grabbed my wrists, digging his fingers in so hard I knew there'd be bruising. Fred yanked me forward and I fell face first to the floor, my nose taking the fall. Suddenly I was being lifted to my feet by my hair. I silently shrieked and clawed weakly at his arms. Fred just chuckled at my attempts...I screeched again and he dropped me. My knees buckled and I fell to the floor again. I watched from my place on the ground as Fred walked away and into the kitchen, leaving me to crawl away to my room. Getting to my room wasn't so hard, he didn't touch my ribs this time, so I was able to stand up and limp down the hallway. I collapsed on my bed in a heap and took deep breaths. I just wish I could get out of here. Seriously, the second I turn eighteen, I'm out. I don't care if I have to live homeless on the streets. Right now, anywhere sounded better than here. I wasn't laying on my bed for very long before I heard a sharp knock on the door. I sucked in a breath and stood up, limping to my doorway and leaning on the frame. I strained my ears as Fred swung the front door open. "Who are you?" Fred asked gruffly. "I'm in Kimberly's class. She left her backpack and I came to return it." Oh no. I thought, suddenly knowing who it was. "Thank you." Fred said as politely as he could. I heard him take the backpack from the boy's hands. It was that scary guy from earlier, with the changing eyes. There was a moment of silence. "I think she went home because she was sick, is she alright?" I could tell Fred was trying to keep his cool. "She's fine." He said. "Just resting. You should probably go now." "Alright." And then the door clicked shut. I squeezed my eyes shut, knowing what was coming. His footsteps were painfully slow as he lumbered to my bedroom. And then I was on the floor. He'd thrown the backpack at me, effectively knocking over my small, malnourished frame. I bit my tongue to stop myself from crying out. "What the heck do you think you're doing?" He yelled. "How did that boy know where you live?" Kick. "Huh? Did you tell him to come rescue you?" Slap. "Do you need a better punishment so you learn?" Jack gripped my neck with his hands and my eyes widened. He wouldn't choke me to death, would he? "Kimberly, do we need to move again?" I shook my head, well tried to. He narrowed his eyes. "Are you friends with that boy?" I shook my head again, desperately trying to get out of his hold. He tightened his grip and I started freaking out. I could no longer breathe. "Maybe I should just kill you, it would make my life so much easier. I wouldn't have to move all the time." I clawed at his hands, I needed air or I was going to pass out. Black dots began to dance at the edge of my vision and I thrashed around, trying to get him to release me. But he only continued to scream words I could no longer comprehend. I'd followed Kimberly's scent down a side road and to a little white house. I'd knocked on the door and the man who answered seemed nice enough. He didn't give me his name, so I didn't give him my name. Kimberly hadn't been in sight. I handed him her backpack and then he just shut the door. Barely even grumbled a goodbye. So now I was standing on the porch probably looking dumb. I sighed and turned around, walking down the driveway. Suddenly, a sharp yell came that immediately halted me. I pricked my ears to find that the sound was coming from the house I'd just turned away from. More yelling came, peaking my interest and my concern for my mate. My wolf was already growling. I couldn't understand the words coming from the person - I'm pretty sure it's the man that opened the door - but whatever they were saying was intense, the tone angry. I almost reached the door when everything was silent, no more yelling. It was almost as if no one was home. I tilted my head and strained my ears, trying to pick up on something, anything But it was like they just evaporated. I reached for the door handle, my wolf getting the best of me and telling me to go find our mate. But then I heard a small thud and then footsteps heading towards me. I turned and bolted - satisfied I'd heard something that announced someone was inside - heading for the trees across the street. I relaxed once I reached the foliage and slowed to a stop. I glanced back at my mate's house, seeing nothing abnormal, before I shifted. My wolf was dark brown, almost black with the tip of my right ear being white. I spun on my hind legs and took off towards my house, staying in the shelter of the trees. The trees blurred by as my paws thrummed evenly against the leaf-covered ground. A high bark came from my left and I flicked my eyes that way. A dusty grey furred wolf with blue-green eyes was running beside me. Instantly, I knew it Sydney. A few more barks and howls came and I recognized my friends around me. I howled back and we continued to run. I skidded to a stop as the pack house came into view. Most of the pack lived here; the Alpha family, the Beta family, and the Gamma family. Along with nearly all the enforcers, lookouts, and the peacemaker. A few enforcers liked to raise their families more privately, so a couple houses were built near and around the pack house. I darted behind a tree, finding basketball shorts tucked into it. I shifted and slipped them on before walking out into the yard. I noticed my friends had done the same as me, Dexter and Cole were in basketball shorts similar to mine while Sydney and Jaycee were in oversized t-shirts. "So, how'd it go?" Jaycee asked immediately. I sighed. "Not well." Their smiles turned to frowns. "What happened?" Cole asked, coming to stand by me. I shook my head. "Later. I'll tell the whole story at dinner, after I break the news to my parents that I found my mate." They swapped confused glances with each other but I ignored it, heading towards the back door. Instantly a delicious smell hit me, drifting from the kitchen. I followed it until I was standing in the kitchen doorway. "Hey, Mom." My mom looked up from the pot over the stove. "Hey, sweetie. However, I was stopped in the hallway by two streaks of red and then something crashed into me. I laughed and looked down at the two monkeys clinging onto my legs. They looked up and beamed at me. Autumn and Amber were my little sisters. Five year old twins to be exact. "Hey girls!" "Can you come play?" They asked sweetly in unison. Amber batted her eyes to add effect. I laughed again, sometimes they were a little much. "Sorry, girls. I have homework to do right now." Amber pouted and Autumn let go of me. "Tomorrow?" Autumn asked. I smiled. "Sure. Tomorrow I'll play with you." "Yes!" Amber exclaimed, jumping up and running off with her sister. I sighed and continued towards my room. I sat at my desk and got out my homework pages, but I couldn't focus on them. My mind was on Kimberly. I put my head on the desk and groaned. In the end, I decided to just leave the homework alone. I'm the Alpha, who needs school anyway? I looked around my room and noticed how messy it was. My bed was not made, clothes were scattered on the floor, and my dresser top was cluttered. Now that I'd met my mate, I needed to do something about my room. Eventually, Kimberly will be living here and I don't want it to look like this when she comes. . I folded some clothes, putting them away, and threw others in the hamper. I cleared off my desk and dresser, finding a place for the papers and random items that had collected there. The only thing I didn't do was make my bed. It was already 7:00 and I saw no point in making it; I was just going to sleep in it in a few hours. Sometime later, a knock on my door made me look up. My mom was standing in the door way, a look of surprise and happiness on her face. "Hey, Mom." She stared at me. "What made you decide to clean your room finally? I've been trying to get you to do it for ages !" I shrugged. "I just noticed it was really gross today, I guess." Mom folded her arms and gave me a pointed look. "Mm hmm." Obviously she didn't believe me. "What's the real reason, Kota?" I sighed and rocked back on my heels. "I'll tell you at dinner, okay?" Mom snapped her fingers, as if just remembering something. "Right! I came up to tell you that dinner's ready." "Great!" I stood up, admiring what I'd done with my room before heading downstairs to the kitchen. My friends were already seated at the round wooden table. We ate here the most, only using the Pack dining room for occasions that included the entire pack. I joined them, sitting in between Cole and Dexter. Amber was across from me, in between Autumn and Mom. Dad was seated next to Mom and Evangeline was next to Autumn. Jaycee and Sydney were next to their mates. We helped ourselves to the Chicken Alfredo and the mixed vegetables in silence. When everyone's plates were full, Mom turned to me. "So, what did you want to tell us at dinner?" I looked up and swallowed before taking a deep breath to answer her. "I met my mate today." Mom and Dad gasped and beamed at me. "It's about time!" Dad exclaimed. I rolled my eyes. "I couldn't control when I met her!" He shrugged. "Still, all your friends found each other when they shifted." I growled, "I know." Mom hit Dad's shoulder and turned back to me. "So, who is she?" "She's new, moved here like yesterday or something." "Is she-" I cut her off, "A wolf? Yes. But I don't think she's shifted yet." Mom nodded. "She probably isn't sixteen yet." I looked at Cole and then at Jaycee. "You guys talked to her the most, do you know how old she is?" Jaycee shook her head. She appeared to be aiming a pea at her sister, getting ready to flick it at her. I laughed at Amber and then answered Autumn's question, smiling. "Maybe! You'd have to ask her." "Where is she?" Autumn asked. "At her house." That reminded me, "Oh, another thing." I said turning back to my friends. "When I went to her house, the guy who answered the door was strange." Jaycee tilted her head. "What do you mean?" I shrugged. "Like he didn't want me there, even though I was just returning her backpack. He took the bag and shut the door in my face. And then I heard him yelling." Sydney shrugged and continued to eat, not seeming too concerned. "Maybe he's just protective of her and doesn't want her to leave with her mate yet." I sighed and leaned back. "Maybe." Everything inside me screamed at me to stop when I tried to move. My plan was to sit up and move myself to my bed, but obviously that wasn't going to happen. It was dark, nearly pitch black in my room, telling me I'd been unconscious for hours. But if it was that dark, that would mean I needed to get up for school soon. I groaned softly and attempted to roll over, to no avail. I tried again, only for the same sharp, knife-like pains to shoot through my ribs. I gritted my teeth to stop myself from crying and got myself onto my hands and knees. Slowly, I leaned back on my knees, wincing as it hurt my right leg. I let out a breath as I was able to relax in a kneeling position, but was already dreading the next step: standing up. It might've only taken less than five minutes, but it felt like it took an hour to get to my feet. And then I nearly tripped on my way to the bed. I gripped the quilt and collapsed, passing out again the moment my head hit the pillow. The next time I woke, the room was lighter, but I knew it wasn't quite day. A grey hue had taken over the blackness from before. I sat up, only to bite my tongue to stop myself from crying out. How could I have forgotten to take it slow? I turned and lowered myself to my stomach, moving as slow as possible. I reached down and unzipped my backpack that had been thrown on the ground beside my bed. I stuck my hand in and pulled out my iPod and headphones. I grunted as I pulled myself back into my bed, gripping my iPod with one hand and clutching my midsection with the other, trying to ignore my ribs. I groaned and collapsed back onto my pillow when I saw the time. 4:33 AM. That means I had an hour and a half before I really had to be awake. But I couldn't fall back asleep. I tried and tried but my eyes just didn't want to stay closed. Giving up, I put in my earbuds and clicked play on my music. Taylor Swift came on and I relaxed, leaning back on my headboard and staring at the ceiling. I had just gotten to the point where I was tired enough to fall back asleep when my alarm rang. Thanks a lot, life. I sighed and turned off the music, sticking my iPod back into the bag. I slowly slid off my bed and stumbled to the bathroom. I took a quick, but painful shower and pulled on jeans and a striped hoodie that went to my chin. I chose the hoodie because I knew it would cover up the mark on my neck; the one Fred left when he'd choked me. I grabbed my backpack from my room and went to the kitchen. Because of the pain, it had taken me a lot longer to get ready, leaving me only five minutes before Fred woke up for work. I ran my fingers through my damp hair, starting to stress out. The clock was ticking and I knew I had very little time left, so I placed a box of cereal, a bowl, milk, and a spoon on the table. I heard his door swing open just as the spoon hit the table. Hopefully it was good enough, because I ran then, ignoring the searing pain in my leg, my ribs, and my back. I fought through the pain until I was halfway down the street and I felt safe enough to relax. I gripped my hoodie, wanting to scream. Why was this my life? Why couldn't I have loving parents? Why was I spending my life with that monster? Why didn't my mom take me with her? Being dead seemed a whole lot better than living at the moment. Just like the rest of my morning, the path to school was slow. I reached class room just as the bell rang. I lowered my head and slid into the same seat as the day before, ignoring Jaycee. "Hey, Kimberly" She said. I didn't even look at her. I saw her frown from the corner of my eye. "What's wrong? I ignored her, taking out a book and turning to the page that was bookmarked. She sighed. "Is it because our friend scared you?" I closed my eyes and swallowed, wishing she'd just leave me alone. "Kimberly. . ." I buried my face deeper into the book. "Kimberly please acknowledge me at least in some way." Giving up, I turned my head to look at her. Instead of smiling like I thought she would Jaycee gasped, her hands covering her mouth. "Oh my gosh, Kimberly! What happened to your face?" I stared at her, confused. What was she talking about? And then I remembered. I widened my eyes and my hands flew to my face. I winced as I touched my cheekbone, where I knew there was a bruise. Ignoring Jaycee and the teacher calling me back, I rushed out of there, biting my cheek to stop myself from crying out. I raced down the hall and flew into the girl's restroom. I leaned on the sink and gasped I'd forgotten to put on makeup. Normally, that wouldn't be much of an issue - as a lot of the blows he gave were to the abdomen - but after last night, my face was painted in awful shades of yellow, green, purple, blue, and brown. The worst spots were on my cheekbone and my jaw. My lip was split and a red line cut my eyebrow short; one inch lower and my eye would've been swollen shut. The opposite eye was slightly swollen, and I noticed my hair had not been brushed. How did I forget to look in the mirror this morning? I put my face in my hands as tears started streaming down my face. I couldn't go back to class, not looking like this! And I couldn't go home, I didn't know when Fred leaves for work or when he comes home and I didn't want to risk it after what happened yesterday. I slid down the wall, pulling my knees to my chest and ducking my head. I don't know how long I sat like that, crying on the bathroom floor pathetically, but eventually, I heard someone slide down next to me. I didn't look up, but I was pretty sure it was Jaycee. I assumed she'd followed me here..... Even though I knew someone was there, the hand that rested on my shoulder still made me jump. "Do you want me to bring you to Kota?" A small voice asked. I vaguely recognized this voice, and it didn't belong to Jaycee. Who's Kota? I blinked and looked up, finding a petite girl with dark hair and bright brown eyes next to me. She resembled Jaycee in her facial features and I recognized her, but barely. She smiled at me. "I'm Evangeline, but you can call me Eva. Do you want me to bring you to your mate?" Mate? What was she talking about? I blinked and wiped away my tears. I remembered Eva from yesterday now, but I didn't know if I wanted to leave this bathroom hide-out yet. She gently gripped my hand and helped me up. If she saw me wince in pain, she didn't mention it. She led me to the door and opened it just enough to poke her head out. "No one's out there." She told me. "Does that make you feel better?" I gave her a small smile and shrugged. She laughed a little and opened the door all the way, pulling me out after her. We paused and I stared at her. Did she just sniff the air? I didn't have time to dwell on that fact though, because suddenly she was off, dragging me down the hall and turning a few times. We climbed the stairs and I saw him. The guy from yesterday. I froze, nearly knocking Eva backwards. "Hey, what's wrong?" She asked. I shook my head, flicking my eyes to him. She let out a huff of a laugh. "Don't worry, he won't hurt you." He saw us then, a smile lighting his face when he spotted me. That smile vanished as soon as he noticed my face. His eyes lit up for a second before turning back to being serious and concerned. "Hey, it's okay." He told me softly. "Come here, let me help you." I don't know if it was how genuinely concerned he looked, or if it was the desire to feel the sparks again that pushed me forward. Instead of walking to him like of originally planned, I tripped and stumbled towards him instead. He caught me and scooped me up, holding me bridal style. The movement reminded me of my ribs and I whimpered, instinctively burying my face into his chest. I felt my eyes become heavy and I knew I was close to passing out again. I flicked my eyes over to find I'd been correct: it was the boy with changing eyes. And so I started to panic.I felt my heartbeat speed up, making the beeping next to me speed up as well. I ripped my hand away from Scary Guy, ignoring the flash of pain that shot up my arm in the process. "Hey!" He called out gently. "Kimberly it's okay. Relax, you're safe." Safe? I didn't know where I was, who he was, and how I got here. How could that be safe? The distinct sound of feet running on the hard floor made my head turn. I saw a lady in blue scrubs and a white coat hurrying towards us. Her blonde hair was pulled back in a braided bun. "Holly, she woke up." Scary Guy told the lady. Holly smiled. "I can see that." She turned to me with gentle eyes. "Luna," Luna? "Can I look you over so I can help you?" I widened my eyes. This was a doctor. I haven't been to a doctor since before. . . Fred wouldn't allow it, making me heal slowly on my own. He didn't want the doctors to get suspicious. With my eyes still wide, I sat up and scooted backwards, ignoring the sting. My back pressed against the wall and I realized I was stuck. Machines blocked my escape to the left, Scary Guy was in the way on the right, and the doctor was at the foot of the bed. I looked down to see I was still in my clothes from school, which brought me relief, but an IV was sticking out of my arm. I took a deep breath and ripped the needle out, wincing a little. "No! Kimberly, stop." The doctor called out, but I ignored her. Scary Guy got up, reaching out for me and I took the opportunity to run.
