Chapter 1 Prologue

Prologue

Rayne's pov

I have been a vet for 3 years now, and I love it. I just opened up my own practice a year ago. I love working with animals. It's people I don't like to much. I always wanted to be a pediatrician, but I didn't think I could do it. I chose to work with animals because they don't judge you.

I am a plus- sized woman. People look at me and laugh. I have been teased about my weight all my life. Those haunting words are what prevented me from following my dreams.

I am a good vet. I worked hard to get my own practice. This is where I was meant to be. I was all alone here. Just me and the animals. I liked it that way. I enjoyed being alone.

My family keeps saying I need to find a good man and settle down. Find me a man that doesn't care about my size, and maybe I will. Men don't want big girls. They want little twiggy models that doesn't know how to eat. My knowing how to eat, and loving food was a problem.

I dated before, but it never went anywhere. They were always embarrassed to be seen with me. They wanted to stay in the bedroom, and I wanted more than that. So, I stay single. Less chance of getting hurt that way.

My secretary was on lunch, and I heard the bell go off. Great that meant someone was here. I hated talking with people. Guess it's part of the job to talk to people though.

I walked out front and stopped dead in my tracks. There at the front desk was the sexiest man alive holding a little puppy. Now this was a site that would leave any woman panting.

"Hi, are you Dr. Rayne?"

"Yes, how can I help you?"

"I found this little guy outside my office, and my friend told me about this place. I will pay to have him checked out. If you can't find his owners, I would be happy to take him home with me."

"Okay I will look him over and see if he has a chip. Just fill out this, and I will let you know when I know anything."

I took the puppy from his arms. When our hands accidently touched, I felt like I was on fire. It's been a long time since a man has touched me. I got his information then he left. I took the puppy back and started to look him over when my phone rang.

"Hello."

"Hey Rayne, it's me Josie."

Josie and I have been great friends since high school. She was now married and had a little boy of her own. I was so happy for her.

"Hey Josie, how are things going?"

"Well, I was wondering what you were doing Friday night."

"I have nothing planned. Why what's up?"

"Well, there is this doctor that works with Brantley that I would love for you to meet. It's not a date just come over for a cookout please."

I hated being set up. It never worked out. But I could never tell Josie no.

"Fine what time should I be there?"

"Oh, yay be here by 7. This is going to be great Rayne just wait and see."

We hung up, and I felt panicked. I knew this wasn't going to end well. Men just didn't like a woman with curves.

Kane's pov

I loved being a pediatrician. I knew since I was a kid that I would always be a doctor. But lately I felt like it wasn't enough. All I ever did was work. I was lonely. I wish I had a wife and child to come home too. All my friends are already married with kids.

Every time we went out, I was always the 5th wheel. So, I just stopped going out. I was doing a house call for one of my patients today. He wasn't doing very well, and I knew he needed to be hospitalized. This is the part of my job I didn't like.

Once I had everything set up for my patient to get to the hospital I headed to my practice. When I was walking up to the door, I heard a whimper from a box in front of the door. I ran over to it and saw a small frail puppy. I called my buddy Brantley and asked if he knew any good vets in the area. He told me to go to his wife Josie's friends vet hospital.

I picked up the little guy and took him there. I walked in but didn't see anyone. Then a beautiful woman came out from the back.

Our hands touched and it felt like an electric current went right through me. I left and wasn't in the car only a second when Brantley called me.

"Hey."

"Hey, did you find the vet hospital okay?"

"Yea thanks."

"So, what did you think of Rayne?"

"Honestly, she was gorgeous, but why are you asking?"

"Well Josie wants to play matchmaker. She invited Rayne over for a cookout. You interested."

"What time?"

"Be here about 6:30?"

"I'll be there."

"Okay see you later."

I hung up and hurried of to my practice. I wanted to be done on time so I could see her again. Maybe I wouldn't be lonely for long.

Elodie took a deep breath and knocked, the sound echoing in the quiet corridor. A moment of silence passed, broken only by the pounding of her heart. Finally, the door snicked open, revealing a surprised Dashiell. 'Can't you see the Do Not Disturb sign? We don't want-' His initial frown quickly morphed into confusion at the sight of his wife. 'What are you doing here?' he demanded. 'Your girlfriend invited me,' Elodie replied, her voice laced with icy calm. She tried to peer past him, but his broad frame blocked the view. A saccharine voice chimed in from within the room. 'Elodie? Oh dear, we didn't mean for you to find out this way. It's just that-' Elodie cut her short. 'Oh please, Selene. Spare me the fake apologies. You wouldn't have sent me all those texts if you didn't want me to know.' Dashiell shifted uncomfortably, his face a mask of annoyance. 'What texts?' Elodie stepped past him, taking in the luxurious suite with a sardonic smile. The king-sized bed, the scattered rose petals, the lingering scent of sex – it all painted a vivid picture of their betrayal. She looked up at Dashiell, her gaze unwavering. 'I want a divorce.' ****** Dashiell lived a life of luxury, surrounded by the best things money could buy. But when a car accident left him vulnerable, he met Elodie, a seemingly ordinary woman who nursed him back to health. Mistaking her for just another employee, Dashiell entered into a loveless marriage with her solely for convenience. However, fate had a different script in store. Elodie, the 'ordinary nurse,' held a secret more precious than any diamond: she was the sole heiress to Northstar, a vast and powerful enterprise. Unaware of her true identity, Dashiell cast her aside when his ex-girlfriend returned, leaving Elodie humiliated. But Elodie was not one to be easily broken. She shed the facade of the meek nurse, reclaiming her rightful inheritance and stepping into the role of Northstar's CEO. Now, the woman Dashiell discarded was the one holding the reins of power. As Elodie thrives in her new role, Dashiell is consumed by regret. He finally sees Elodie for the extraordinary woman she truly is, realising the depth of his mistake. But will his remorse be enough to win back the heart he so carelessly discarded?
