Chapter 1 Ella

Ella

" wake up, sleepyhead, all you know how to do is sleep " my mom said tapping me angrily. I groaned

" go wash the dishes " she instructed

" but mom, we have a maid " i replied sleepily.

" i must not meet you here when i come back " she said and with that walked out.

I carried my legs sluggishly to the bathroom . I took my bath brushed my teeth and walked out. I applied my body lotion and wore my clothes. I headed downstairs, Mia my little sister was having breakfast, she looked at me and frowned, i ignored her and walked to the kitchen. I had already washed all the plates when Mia walked in and dropped her plate in the basin. She turned to leave

" come wash the plate " i said to her

She turned

" i don't want to " she said rolling her eyes at me.

" are you nuts " i half yelled

" well do your worst " she sneered

" I'm not going to repeat my words Mia, because I'm not your maid " i replied .

" I'm not gonna wash it and that's final " she replied

I raised my hands about to hit her when my mom walked into the kitchen.

" what were you trying to do " she asked me.

" i was about to slap Mia " i sneered

" and you still have the guts to say it huh?, how many times do i have to tell you not to try to lay your filthy hands on Mia " she yelled. A tear escaped my eyes. She turned to Mia

" go to school dear " she said

Mia looked at me and smirked before leaving.

" mum, what... " i started but i got interrupted by her.

" you are grounded " she said

" but mom, i have test today " i replied

" i don't care, but you are grounded " she replied and walked away. I walked to my room and shut the door.

"Oh God, why, why do i have to go through this all the time, why do i have to be the hated one, i can't do this anymore, I'm tired " i said crying

I thought of running away but the idea, just frightens me the more .

I can't miss this test, what do i do.

I walked to my closet and took a black hoodie, i wore it and carried my bag." I'm going for this test and nothing is gonna stop me " i said to myself as i walked to the window. I pushed it open ,I climbed out and rested on the branch of the tree close to my window. I reached out to the window and closed it a little bit . I climbed down from the tree and looked around cautiously to make sure no one was there , when I was sure none was there I raced to my bicycle, wore my helmet and rode straight to school. I peddled as fast as i could and got to school at the nick of time. I immediately ran to my class and took my seat.

" hey, you were late " Chelsea my best friend asked as I took my seat.

"The usual" I simply said.

Chelsea is my best friend, she's always there for me , she's everything to me . when I told her *the usual * she already understood what I meant. It was no secret how my parents treated me. We started the test and ended it sooner than I expected. After the test Chelsea walked over to me

" girl ,what happened this time ?" She asked as she sat on my table

" my mom grounded me " I sighed

"Why?, doesn't she know you have test today " she replied surprised

" I seriously don't know ,but I need to go now ,she must not find out I sneaked out " I replied as I carried my bag.

" okay " Chelsea replied as we walked out of the class together

" oh no " I muttered as I saw mia ,I ducked quickly before she saw me and hid .

" where's Ella " I heard mia say as she approached Chelsea

" don't ask me silly I don't live with you " Chelsea sneered

" oh ,I thought she sneaked out after being grounded because of me " mia mocked as she and her friends laughed.

" ha ha ,funny " Chelsea sneered and they walked away .

When I was sure mia had gone I came out .

" Thank goodness she didn't see me if not I would have been a dead meat " I sighed as we walked to the bicycle lot.

" okay ,I'll come to your house after school " Chelsea said as I put on my helmet.

" okay ,thank you " I forced a smile as I rode away faster than I did when I was coming.

I got home and parked my bicycle carefully, I walked cautiously to my window ,climbed the tree , opened the window before jumping in.

I shut it tight when I got in and flung myself on my bed. I sighed in relief, thank goodness I wasn't caught ,because I don't know what I would go throw if I was caught. I took off the hoodie and placed it in my closet. I took my favorite novel ,why!, actually that was the title ,it was like the novel was talking about me ,just that the girl was married off to a total stranger.

I lay on my bed and flipped through the pages of the novel to where I stopped reading. Suddenly the door opened

" mom" I whispered surprised

" did you go anywhere?" she asked

Oh my!!

" no I was just in my room ....on my bed here " I managed to reply

" someone told me he saw you " she said

"Me ? ,me? No , I have been here the whole time " I replied

" Really ? ,really Ella ?" My mom asked doubtingly making me to shiver in fright.......

I died on a Tuesday. It wasn't a quick death. It was slow, cold, and meticulously planned by the man who called himself my father. I was twenty years old. He needed my kidney to save my sister. The spare part for the golden child. I remember the blinding lights of the operating theater, the sterile smell of betrayal, and the phantom pain of a surgeon's scalpel carving into my flesh while my screams echoed unheard. I remember looking through the observation glass and seeing him-my father, Giovanni Vitiello, the Don of the Chicago Outfit-watching me die with the same detached expression he used when signing a death warrant. He chose her. He always chose her. And then, I woke up. Not in heaven. Not in hell. But in my own bed, a year before my scheduled execution. My body was whole, unscarred. The timeline had reset, a glitch in the cruel matrix of my existence, giving me a second chance I never asked for. This time, when my father handed me a one-way ticket to London-an exile disguised as a severance package-I didn't cry. I didn't beg. My heart, once a bleeding wound, was now a block of ice. He didn't know he was talking to a ghost. He didn't know I had already lived through his ultimate betrayal. He also didn't know that six months ago, during the city's brutal territory wars, I was the one who saved his most valuable asset. In a secret safe house, I stitched up the wounds of a blinded soldier, a man whose life hung by a thread. He never saw my face. He only knew my voice, the scent of vanilla, and the steady touch of my hands. He called me Sette. Seven. For the seven stitches I put in his shoulder. That man was Dante Moretti. The Ruthless Capo. The man my sister, Isabella, is now set to marry. She stole my story. She claimed my actions, my voice, my scent. And Dante, the man who could spot a lie from a mile away, believed the beautiful deception because he wanted it to be true. He wanted the golden girl to be his savior, not the invisible sister who was only ever good for her spare parts. So I took the ticket. In my past life, I fought them, and they silenced me on an operating table. This time, I will let them have their perfect, gilded lie. I will go to London. I will disappear. I will let Seraphina Vitiello die on that plane. But I will not be a victim. This time, I will not be the lamb led to slaughter. This time, from the shadows of my exile, I will be the one holding the match. And I will wait, with the patience of the dead, to watch their entire world burn. Because a ghost has nothing to lose, and a queen of ashes has an empire to gain.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
