CEO's Lover: Love Bound By Contract Chapter 1 Hayley Gu

Y City was a beautiful seaside city. The mountains in the north towered into the clouds and pointed straight at the sky. To the south was a vast sea. The wind was always salty, and the temperature was always so pleasant. In the southern suburbs of Y City stood an ancient castle. Its high walls were covered with dark green vines, and its glazed windows would always reflect the beautiful moonlight in the most ethereal way. The waves were uncharacteristically high and strong at that night.

Gunshots rang out one after another inside the castle. The moon's dim light shone in from the window, behind Hayley Gu. She had long dark hair, wearing a long black cloak. Perhaps it was because she was too surprised, or because of the bruises on her arms, but her body was trembling all over.

She had never thought that she would have such a day. Facing the man in front of her, she didn't even dare to look at him again. The man stood in front of her, looking at her condescendingly.

"Hayley, what's wrong? Are you reluctant to kill me?" With contempt in his eyes, Mac Qi fearlessly looked at Hayley Gu in the eye despite her pointing a loaded gun at him.

As if venting her resentment, she shot the ceiling angrily. Then she pointed the gun at the enemy in front of her and warned him not to get close to her again. His cold eyes and cruel smile reminded her that this man was no longer the gentle and considerate man she once knew.

That day, she received a call from her adoptive father. It came from out of the blue. She couldn't even remember the last time she received a call from him. What he said to her was looping in her head, like a broken record. "Do one last thing for me. After that, I will set you free." She had no choice. Ever since the day her father picked her to be his daughter, she knew that she would not have any freedom or choice. So she agreed.

When he said that he would give her freedom, she accepted the task without hesitation. She stayed in Y City to wait. This beautiful city had always reminded her of childhood, when she was still with the Jiang family. It made her love the city. It was even here that she met Mac Qi. She learned from this man what love was and what warmth was. She didn't know about these feelings before.

When she received the task, she was very happy. Because as long as she completed this task, she could be free. She could live the rest of her life with the one she loved, regardless of what was going on. Countless times she had dreamed of living a life where no one controlled her, and now, this dream was finally about to come true.

After getting everything ready, she rushed to her destination determined to complete her mission as fast as she could. But she never thought that her last target would be Mac Qi. At that moment, her mind went blank. A cruel and ridiculous choice was placed in front of her: kill the man she loved in exchange for her freedom, or give up the task and continue to live in darkness, all the while having her man by her side.

"Hayley, didn't Neil want you to kill me? I'm here now. As long as you pull the trigger, you will finally get what you want."

His smile made her tremble with anger. She felt a pang of pain in her heart. 'Mac knows that it is impossible for me to kill him. He knows that I love him, but he still forces me to do so.'

Suddenly, it seemed like her life flashed before her eyes. She remembered Mac Qi's smile, gentleness, and loving nature. And she also remembered her adoptive father who treated her as his own daughter.

When she was five years old, she saw how her family were killed with her very own eyes, and how her house was burnt down to ashes. Her mother hid her in a secret room, making her narrowly escaping the massacre inflicted upon her loved ones. She stayed in the ruins for three days and nights, until she dragged her tired and hungry body to the street. In that disaster, everyone in their village was killed. She cried endlessly, helplessly, until Neil Gu saw her and took her away.

Holding her in his arms, he took her back to the Gu family. She watched quietly as Neil Gu sent someone to prepare bath water and cook for her. Then, like a father, he gently stroked her forehead and said with a kind smile, "I'm Neil Gu. They all call me Mr. Gu. From now on, you can take my surname."

From that day on, she became Hayley Gu, and Neil Gu began to ask people to teach her reading and martial arts. The Gu family was a place that trained professional killers. As she grew up, she was trained to be a killer. Neil Gu was very strict with her training. She had heavy classes every day. In the morning, there would be teachers to teach her social etiquette, political literature, and sometimes, musical instruments. In the afternoon, in addition to the physical training, she also had to learn how to operate guns and how to use cold steel. She also practiced martial arts religiously. It was her daily life. After dinner, there were still some side classes that needed her to learn. The classes every day were so heavy that at times, she would find it hard keep up. She slept less than four hours every day, and the pressure she was under exceeded what she could deliver. Once, a small explosion happened because of a careless mistake committed by her during her shooting training. Her right hand palm was seriously burned that she passed out on the training ground. Neil Gu then poured a bucket of saline water on her wound. She was awakened by the pain. Her adoptive father said to her coldly, "Do you want to live?"

Of course she knew what he meant, so she endured the pain and stood up to continue training regardless of her physical fatigue. If her right hand was injured, she should use her left hand. Although the wound was still bleeding, she must endure the pain and continue the training until she completed it. When she went back to her bedroom to rest, she found a bottle of burn ointment on her bedside table. It was the first time that she had felt a little warmth in the cold, uncaring place she grew up in.

But even so, the training did not stop. It went on day after day, no matter what happened. And, as she grew up, her courses became harder and more dangerous. After days, months, and years, Hayley Gu became Neil Gu's best killer, the most profitable asset of the Gu family. She had forgotten about love. That was until she met Mac Qi.

I was the invisible failure of the Goff family, hiding my medical genius behind a report card full of Fs and a slumped posture. One rainy night, I found a man bleeding out in a dark alley behind the school gymnasium, a knife protruding from his gut. To keep the police from digging into my secrets, I dragged the dying stranger to my bedroom and stitched him up using a hidden surgical kit. I thought I was being careful, but my cousin Cleora caught a glimpse of the blood and immediately alerted my fiancé's wealthy family. By morning, my world collapsed as my future in-laws stormed the manor, throwing an annulment agreement at my feet. They called me a "loose woman" and "million-dollar trash," while my own housekeeper gleefully testified against me. At school, the word "SLUT" was spray-painted across my locker in jagged red letters, and the boy I was supposed to marry looked at me with nothing but cold revulsion. I didn't understand why they were so eager to destroy me before even asking for the truth. I was the one who had spent years protecting this family's reputation, yet they were throwing me to the wolves over a single misunderstanding. I felt a surge of cold fury as I realized my loyalty had been met with nothing but betrayal. Everything changed when the "dying" stranger finally walked down the stairs, shirtless and bandaged, revealing himself as Braylon Lancaster, the most powerful man in the city. He didn't just defend me; he froze my fiancé's entire family fortune with a single phone call. As my in-laws fled in terror, a courier arrived with a five-carat pink diamond from the head of the city's most dangerous crime syndicate. The note read: "The debt is acknowledged." Suddenly, I wasn't just a failure anymore-I was the most sought-after woman in the underworld.

I spent two years sweating on construction sites, hauling drywall and mixing cement, just to give Brittni the normal life she said she wanted. On our anniversary, I sat in our dark kitchen with a plate of homemade fettuccine and a one-carat diamond ring I’d saved six months of wages for, waiting for her to come home. Then my phone pinged. An Instagram notification showed Brittni at a luxury rooftop gala, a bottle of Dom Perignon on ice, and a wealthy socialite’s hand resting possessively on her waist. She was wearing the expensive red dress I bought her for her birthday—the one she told me was "too fancy" for our simple dinner dates. The caption read, "Back with my queen," and Brittni had replied with a single red heart. Minutes later, she texted me: "Stuck at a late-night board meeting, babe. Don't wait up. Love you!" I looked at the cold, congealed pasta and the jagged scar on my ribs from my time in the special forces, realizing the last two years were nothing but a lie built on her pity and my desperate need for normalcy. I didn't scream or throw my phone. Instead, a strange, predatory calm washed over me—the "Ghost" persona kicking in to shut down the noise of heartbreak and focus on mission parameters. I was done being the "simple builder" who worried about rent while she used me as a placeholder until a "better" man came along. I walked to the closet, pried up a loose floorboard, and pulled out a gold signet ring bearing the Hubbard family crest—the symbol of the multi-billion-dollar empire I had rejected five years ago. I dropped the modest engagement ring into the trash on top of the wasted pasta and dialed a number I had sworn never to call again. "It's time, Harve. I'm coming home." The motorcade was dispatched before I even hung up. As I stepped into a blacked-out Cadillac and watched the $50 million deposit hit my account, I realized how small Brittni’s world truly was. She thought she was trading up for a Rolex and a social media tag, but she was about to find out that the man she just ghosted was the heir to the very empire that owned her future.

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
