I was the most loyal wife of Alessandro, the coldest and most ruthless mafia godfather of the underworld. Three years ago, my husband's pregnant mistress, Valentina, framed me. She claimed that I had killed her unborn child, and my husband believed her without a moment's hesitation. Only because the old Matriarch of the mafia had saved my life seven years ago - and because I owed her that so-called "debt of life" - I gritted my teeth and agreed to serve as the mistress's shield under the banner of the legitimate wife, until her new child was safely delivered. At the banquet, the society ladies sneered at me: "The mighty Mafia Dona, reduced to the mistress's personal nanny." When Valentina demanded the silver pendant my parents had left me, he merely ordered flatly: "It's just a necklace. What is all this fuss about?" His voice was cold to the core. He believed he had long since crushed every ounce of pride I had. But he never knew that the life debt I was repaying had nothing to do with him. The moment that bastard child was born, my account with the Cavallaro family would be settled in full. I slapped the divorce papers down on his desk and blocked his number. Without looking back, I boarded a one-way flight to Europe. I was going to take back an empire of my own.

Chapter 1
Serena's POV
I was carefully cleaning the blood of a rival gang boss from my husband's knuckles when the old Matriarch of the mafia handed me a burner phone.
The screen showed a single text: "She moves into the estate tonight. Remember your promise. Protect the heir - or the life I saved seven years ago gets repaid today."
I looked up at the cold-blooded godfather who controlled my entire world, and I knew with perfect clarity that before I vanished from his life completely, I would have to endure ten full months of his cruelty.
Alessandro Cavallaro didn't just rule the underworld. He was the underworld.
He was the godfather of godfathers. Merely by standing there, he drained the air out of a room. His broad shoulders and those obsidian-cold eyes compelled absolute submission from anyone who looked at him.
Last night, single-handedly and bare-fisted, he had annihilated an entire rival crew.
Today, Alessandro sat on the edge of our bed, letting me dress his wounded flesh - utterly unaware that the countdown in my heart had already begun.
I owed a life debt to his grandmother, the Matriarch Rosa.
Seven years ago, my convoy had been ambushed at a mountain pass.
As I lay bleeding out on the freezing asphalt, it was Rosa who mobilized the family's only medevac helicopter and saved my life.
In doing so, she delayed treatment for her own condition, leaving her with a heart ailment that would never fully heal.
In the mafia world, a life debt is an iron yoke around your neck - heavy and unbreakable.
Now, she had tightened that chain.
In the dim study of the family's old residence, I had already agreed to her terms.
I would personally bring Valentina - the woman who shared Alessandro's bed - into the heavily guarded Cavallaro estate.
I would prepare her every meal, hire her a dedicated medical team.
Until her child drew its first breath, I would use my status as the legitimate wife to shield her from every assassination attempt the rival families threw at her.
In exchange, Rosa would give me a court-certified, family-sanctioned decree of divorce.
Total freedom. A past wiped clean.
The next ten months were a textbook lesson in humiliation.
I moved out of the master bedroom into a lifeless guest room.
At every gala dinner, the mafia wives whispered behind their fans.
They called me a pitiful, hopelessly deluded madwoman. They laughed at how the untouchable Mafia Dona had been reduced to a babysitter for her husband's mistress.
I let them laugh.
I spent my days inspecting the estate's defenses and taste-testing Valentina's food for poison.
Alessandro watched my meek compliance with cold satisfaction - he believed I was doing penance.
Three years ago, Valentina had been pregnant with her first child. That pregnancy had ended in a miscarriage.
Valentina had wept in Alessandro's arms, claiming that I had forced her onto the operating table, painting the accident as a jealous, cold-blooded murder.
Alessandro had believed her without hesitation, and he had never forgiven me since.
Now he believed that my total submission was me begging for his mercy.
He was wrong. I was merely paying off a debt.
The day finally arrived. The sharp smell of antiseptic flooded my lungs in the family's private hospital.
Valentina suffered through twelve hours of labor.
I stood outside the heavy double doors the entire time, coordinating the security perimeter.
Alessandro paced the corridor, jaw clenched, his dark suit still immaculate despite the long, agonizing wait.
A clear, piercing cry cut through the suffocating silence.
The heavy doors swung open. The doctor stepped out, pulled down her surgical mask, and nodded.
A healthy baby boy. The Cavallaro heir.
Alessandro exhaled a long breath, as if setting down a weight he had carried for months.
Then he turned, stepped toward me, and seized the back of my neck.
His broad, calloused palm covered my nape, burning hot. He bent down and pressed his lips to my forehead.
It was the first time in three years he had touched me with anything resembling tenderness.
"Accept the bastard as your own," he commanded in a low, hoarse voice. "You will raise him. We'll legitimize his blood."
He spoke as though he were granting me the greatest of gifts.
He wanted the respectable façade a legitimate wife provided, while keeping the woman he truly desired tucked safely at his side.
He wanted everything.
I met his shadowed eyes and gave him a flawless, utterly empty nod.
At the end of the corridor, beside the elevator bank, Rosa was waiting.
She leaned her weight on a silver cane, her sharp eyes locked on mine.
I turned away from my husband and walked toward the Matriarch.
She reached into her designer handbag.
She pulled out a crisp white envelope and pressed it into my palm - the receipt of acceptance for my divorce petition.
"Three days," she rasped, her voice like gravel. "The statutory waiting period for the divorce ends in exactly three days."
I clutched the envelope, feeling the thick, expensive paper against my fingertips.
I glanced back down the corridor, watching Alessandro hurry into the delivery room, eager to see the child another woman had borne him.
And in my heart, I quietly began counting down the time that remained.
