You're nothing, Miss Reyes. People like you don't belong here." Every day, billionaire Adrian Cole tears Amara apart in front of the entire office. Fired, framed, and evicted, she swallows every insult because she has nowhere else to go. Then a stranger whispers, "Your mother has been looking for you for twenty-two years." Suddenly Amara learns that her family is powerful, her past was erased on purpose, and the cold man who ruined her days is hiding a folder with her real name in it. Why did he hire her? Who wanted her to disappear? And why does his cruelty vanish the moment no one is watching? Now she has until sunset on her birthday to decide who to trust: the man who broke her heart, or the smiling stranger offering her everything. He broke her heart to keep her safe. But some secrets cost more than love.
The Billionaire's Cruel Secret
Nothing
"Again," Adrian Cole said.
The word landed like a slap in the silent conference room. Forty people sat around the glass table. Not one of them looked at Amara.
"Mr. Cole, I checked the figures three times-"
"Then you checked them wrong three times." He didn't raise his voice. He never did. That was the worst part. He dropped her report onto the table as if it were something dirty. "This is what happens when we hire people from nowhere. Someone with nothing behind her name."
A few people shifted in their seats. Someone near the back coughed to cover a laugh.
Amara's fingers dug into the edge of her chair. Heat climbed her neck, but she kept her face still. She had been trained for this by years of foster homes, cheap apartments, and landlords who never knocked. She knew how to let words pass through her without catching.
"I'll fix it by morning, sir."
"You'll fix it by five." Adrian finally looked at her. Gray eyes, cold as winter glass. "And Miss Reyes? If you can't handle this job, there are a hundred people waiting for your desk. People who actually belong here."
People who actually belong here.
"Yes, sir."
"Dismissed."
She gathered her papers with steady hands and walked out. She did not run. She did not look back.
The stairwell on the thirty-first floor was the only place in the building without cameras. Amara pushed through the door, let it close behind her, and slid down the wall until she was sitting on the cold concrete.
Then she let herself shake.
She pressed the heel of her hand against her mouth to keep the sound in. Three months. Three months of this. Every meeting, every email, every hallway. Of all the analysts in Cole Industries, he'd chosen her to humiliate, over and over, as if she'd done something to him.
What did I ever do to you?
Her stomach twisted with hunger. She'd skipped breakfast, and there was no money for lunch until payday. She pulled her knees up and breathed until the tremble stopped. She had survived worse. She would survive him.
Back at her desk, a paper bag was waiting beside her keyboard.
Inside was a warm chicken sandwich, a bottle of water, and a small slice of lemon cake. No note. No name.
She glanced around the floor. Everyone was typing, heads down, avoiding her. Whoever had left it was long gone.
"Probably Delia from accounting," she murmured, though Delia had never spoken to her. She ate anyway, because pride didn't pay for hunger.
Across the glass walls of the executive office, Adrian Cole stood at his window with his back to the floor. If she had looked up, she might have noticed that his reflection was watching her. That his jaw was tight. That when she took the first bite, something in his shoulders finally let go.
But she didn't look up.
At 7:42 p.m., Amara submitted the corrected report. Not one figure had changed. It had been right the first time.
She knew it. He knew it, too.
The elevator ride down was quiet. The lobby was nearly empty, only the night guard and the hum of the lights. She stepped out through the revolving doors into the cold October air and tightened her thin coat.
"Miss Amara Reyes?"
She stopped.
A man stood beside a black car parked at the curb. Silver hair, a dark suit that cost more than her yearly rent, hands folded in front of him. He wasn't a reporter. He wasn't a debt collector. He looked at her the way people look at something they've searched for too long.
"Who's asking?"
"My name is Whitmore. I represent a family you've never met." His voice softened. "Miss Reyes, I need you to listen carefully, because I only have one chance to say this."
Her pulse hammered. "I don't know you."
"No. But your mother has been looking for you for twenty-two years."
The street went silent.
Amara felt the ground tilt under her feet. Her mother. The word she hadn't said aloud since she was five years old, standing on the steps of a children's home with a paper bag and no one coming back for her.
"That's not funny," she whispered.
"It isn't meant to be." Whitmore opened the car door. "Your family name is Hartwell. And you are in more danger than you know."
Behind her, on the thirty-first floor, a tall figure stood frozen at the glass wall, watching the black car below. His phone was already in his hand. His face had gone white.
"Not yet," Adrian Cole whispered. "She wasn't supposed to find out yet."
