Adrian thought his wife was weak. He believed Elena cried because she couldn't bear to lose him. He believed she was jealous of his first love. He believed she would never survive without him. He was wrong about everything. Their marriage was arranged for business, but Elena had spent years playing the role of the devoted wife. Then Adrian betrayed her with the woman he had loved before their marriage. Elena didn't fight. She didn't expose them. She simply walked away. After the divorce, nobody saw her again. Until one night, Adrian's friends accidentally discover her at a private bridal shower. And what they overhear leaves them speechless. Elena had known about the affair from the very beginning. The tears were an act. The heartbreak was an act. Even the perfect wife Adrian thought he knew was an act. But if none of it was real Who is Elena?
"Elena, you really are the perfect wife."
The compliment came with a warm laugh from across the dinner table.
Elena smiled.
"Thank you."
She lowered her eyes politely and reached for the teapot.
Across from her, Adrian didn't look up.
He was scrolling through something on his phone, one hand resting casually beside his plate. The expensive watch around his wrist caught the light from the chandelier every time he moved.
He looked completely uninterested.
Elena poured tea into Mrs. Hartwell's cup.
The older woman smiled approvingly.
"Always so thoughtful. Adrian is lucky to have you."
This time, Elena glanced at her husband.
Adrian finally looked up.
Their eyes met for barely a second.
Then his gaze moved away.
"I suppose," he said.
The table went quiet for a moment.
His mother frowned.
"Adrian."
"What?"
"You could at least say something nice about your wife."
Adrian placed his phone beside his plate.
"What would you like me to say?"
"That she looks beautiful tonight."
His eyes moved toward Elena.
She was wearing a simple dark-blue dress. Nothing flashy. Her hair was pinned neatly behind her ears, and a small pair of earrings rested against her neck.
Adrian looked at her for a moment.
Then he said, "She always dresses appropriately."
A few people laughed awkwardly.
Elena smiled as if the comment didn't bother her.
"Thank you."
Her mother-in-law sighed.
"You two have been married for three years. I still don't understand why you act like strangers."
Nobody answered.
Because everyone at the table knew the reason.
The marriage had never been about love.
It had been a business arrangement.
Three years ago, the Hartwell and Laurent families had combined their interests through marriage. Their companies had benefited. Their families had gained influence.
And Elena had become Adrian Laurent's wife.
At least on paper, everything had worked perfectly.
She had never embarrassed him.
Never caused a scandal.
Never complained publicly.
She attended every family function, remembered everyone's birthdays, visited his parents, and stood beside Adrian whenever he needed a wife at an important event.
She was exactly what everyone expected.
The perfect wife.
Only Adrian seemed to dislike the arrangement.
Elena took another sip of water.
She had stopped wondering why.
At first, she had tried.
She had asked him what he liked for breakfast.
She had learned his preferred coffee.
She had waited for him to come home.
She had even asked him once whether he wanted them to take a vacation together.
He had looked at her as though she had suggested something ridiculous.
"I don't need a wife who follows me around."
After that, she stopped asking.
Dinner continued.
Business was discussed.
Stocks.
Contracts.
A new hotel project.
Someone mentioned an upcoming charity gala.
Elena listened quietly.
She rarely spoke unless someone asked her something.
That was another thing people liked about her.
She knew when to speak.
And more importantly, she knew when not to.
When dinner finally ended, the guests began leaving.
Elena stood near the entrance beside Adrian, smiling as they said their goodbyes.
"Take care."
"Thank you for coming."
"We'll see you next week."
Adrian barely participated.
He shook a few hands, said even fewer words, and walked toward the elevator as soon as the last guest left.
Elena followed.
The doors closed.
For the first time that evening, they were alone.
Silence filled the elevator.
Elena looked at the numbers above the door.
Adrian stared straight ahead.
"Are you going somewhere tomorrow?" he asked suddenly.
Elena turned toward him.
"No."
"Good."
She waited.
He didn't explain.
"Why?"
"I have somewhere I need to be."
Elena nodded.
"Okay."
Another silence.
Then Adrian's phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
Something changed in his expression.
It was subtle.
A tiny smile.
The kind Elena hadn't seen directed at her in a very long time.
He typed a quick reply.
The elevator doors opened.
Adrian walked out without waiting for her.
Elena followed him into the hallway.
"Adrian."
He stopped.
She almost never called his name like that.
"What?"
"Your phone."
He looked down at it.
"What about it?"
"You smiled."
His expression hardened.
"So?"
"Nothing."
She smiled politely.
"I was just surprised."
Adrian stared at her.
Then his phone vibrated again.
He glanced at the screen.
This time, he didn't bother hiding his smile.
He walked away.
Elena remained in the hallway for a few seconds.
Then she entered the bedroom.
Their bedroom was enormous.
Beautiful.
Perfect.
And completely divided.
Adrian had never liked sharing a bed with her.
So, after their first month of marriage, he had moved into the guest room.
Everyone assumed it was because he was busy.
Elena knew better.
She changed into her night clothes and sat at the edge of the bed.
Her phone lit up.
A message from Sofia.
Are you coming tomorrow?
Elena typed.
Yes.
Another message arrived almost immediately.
Good. We need to talk.
Elena stared at the screen.
Then she smiled faintly.
She knew exactly what Sofia wanted to talk about.
Her friends had been worried about her marriage for years.
They believed Adrian was hurting her.
They weren't entirely wrong.
But they didn't know everything.
Nobody did.
Not yet.
A soft knock came at the door.
Elena looked up.
The door opened.
Adrian stood there.
He had changed into a dark shirt and trousers.
"What is it?" she asked.
"I won't be home tomorrow night."
Elena nodded.
"Okay."
He hesitated.
"You don't need to wait for me."
"I wasn't planning to."
Something flickered across his face.
Perhaps irritation.
Perhaps surprise.
Then it disappeared.
"Good."
He turned to leave.
"Adrian."
He looked back.
Elena studied him quietly.
There was something different about him tonight.
He seemed unusually careful.
Almost nervous.
She had seen him angry.
She had seen him arrogant.
She had seen him indifferent.
But nervous?
That was new.
"Where are you going?"
His jaw tightened.
"Out."
"With whom?"
He looked at her for a long moment.
"Why do you care?"
Elena lowered her gaze.
"I don't."
It was the answer he expected.
He left.
The door closed.
Elena remained sitting on the bed.
Her expression didn't change.
She reached for her phone again.
There was a new notification.
A photograph.
She opened it.
For several seconds, she simply looked at the screen.
It showed Adrian.
And Victoria.
Standing together outside a restaurant.
Victoria was smiling.
Adrian was looking at her in a way Elena had never seen him look at anyone else.
At the bottom of the photograph was a message from an unknown number.
You should know who your husband is meeting tomorrow.
Elena stared at the picture.
Victoria.
Her cousin.
Adrian's first love.
The woman everyone in both families knew he had once wanted to marry.
The woman who had supposedly moved on years ago.
Elena looked at the photograph again.
Then she locked her phone.
She placed it beside her.
And lay down.
Her face remained calm.
No tears.
No anger.
No trembling hands.
Nothing.
Outside the room, Adrian's footsteps disappeared down the hallway.
Elena closed her eyes.
Tomorrow would be interesting.
Because for the first time in three years, Adrian had given her a reason to pay attention.
And he had no idea she had already been paying attention for a very long time.
