For a whole year, I played the perfect, quiet wife to Julian Carlisle, a billionaire CEO who treated our marriage like a cold business deal. On our first anniversary, which was also my birthday, I went to his hotel suite to surprise him. Instead, I found him tenderly fastening a diamond necklace around the neck of my stepsister, Amber. "Will your wife be angry?" she asked with a smug smile. "She won't know. Don't mention her," Julian replied coldly. I finally realized his emotional distance wasn't because he was a private man. He just never wanted me. While I was trying to build a life with him, he had secretly moved Amber into the penthouse right across the hall from our marital home. He paraded her around, giving her the romance and tenderness he completely denied me. I had buried my award-winning architectural career and my entire identity just to play the role of his obedient wife. I felt completely ridiculous for ever believing my sincerity could warm his heart. The ultimate betrayal and public humiliation twisted my heartbreak into a cold, hard rage. I left my five-carat wedding ring on the table, packed only the cheap clothes I came with, and filed for a no-alimony divorce. The identity of "Mrs. Carlisle" died that night. I am taking back my real name, rebuilding my empire, and making sure he regrets the day he ever underestimated me.
Stella Pacheco stood outside the presidential suite of the St. Regis, the tips of her fingers cold. Exhaustion from pulling an all-nighter to finish her design blueprints still lingered, casting a faint shadow beneath her pretty eyes.
She held a Black Forest cake she had spent all afternoon making, its dark chocolate curls and sugar-dusted roses perfect beneath the clear plastic cover.
She glanced at her phone, the screen's bright light stinging her tired eyes. The last messages from her conversation with her best friend, Melanie, were still there from half an hour ago.
Melanie: "Are you kidding me, Stella? You pull an all-nighter slaving away for a client, and then you spend the afternoon baking a cake for that jerk? To celebrate your anniversary and birthday? I just don't get it... He forgot your birthday last year, why are you still going to all this trouble for him?"
The message was brimming with a frustrated, tough-love tone. Melanie was the only person who knew the depths of her loneliness and heartache over the past year of her marriage.
Stella's fingers hovered over the screen for a long moment before she typed back a weak reply.
"Melanie, he's just busy. You don't know, he's actually really good to me. The pressure from work is just too much."
Even as she typed the words, she could barely convince herself.
And above her chat with Melanie, the message she'd sent to her husband, Julian, an hour ago was still there, unanswered.
"Is work over? I miss you."
A familiar ache tightened in her chest, a feeling she had learned to swallow over the past year. He's just busy, she told herself again and again.
Stella took a deep breath, pushing down the rising tide of disappointment, and raised her hand to knock.
But the heavy wooden door was already ajar, leaving a crack no wider than a finger.
A woman's voice, low and sweet, drifted through the opening. It was a voice that made every muscle in Stella's body go rigid.
It was her stepsister, Amber Pacheco.
Stella's heart dropped into her stomach. A cold dread, sharp and sickening, crept up her spine. She didn't push the door. Instead, she moved closer, drawn by a morbid curiosity she couldn't fight.
She peered through the gap.
The suite was dim, lit only by a few wall sconces that cast long shadows. The air was thick with the scent of Julian's cigars, mingled with a cloying perfume that wasn't hers. It made her stomach churn.
Her eyes adjusted to the gloom, her gaze traveling past the entryway to the living area.
And there he was.
Julian's tall, broad-shouldered frame was turned away from her. In front of him, nestled against his chest, was Amber.
In his hands, Julian held a delicate diamond necklace. He was looking down, his focus absolute, as he gently fastened the clasp around Amber's neck.
The gesture, the intense concentration on his face-it was a tenderness Stella had never, not once, received in their entire year of marriage.
Amber tilted her head back, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. Her eyes, as if guided by a cruel instinct, seemed to look directly toward the crack in the door, finding Stella's. The look was a silent, venomous taunt.
"Julian," Amber said, her voice just loud enough to carry. "Will your sister... be angry? I just wanted you to help me put it on."
Julian's voice was as cold and steady as ever, devoid of any emotion. "She won't know. Don't mention her."
The words hit Stella like a physical blow. The air rushed out of her lungs. The blood in her veins turned to ice. A roaring sound filled her ears, drowning out everything else.
The cake box in her hands began to tremble violently. The beautiful ribbon slipped through her numb fingers.
She tried to turn, to run, but her feet felt nailed to the floor.
Amber, who must have seen the slight movement at the door, raised her voice, a saccharine, pitying tone lacing her words. "But, it's her birthday today, isn't it?"
That sentence was the final, twisting turn of a knife already lodged in her heart.
Stella's vision blurred. The opulent hallway began to spin.
She couldn't take it anymore. She stumbled backward, her body hitting the wall opposite the suite with a dull thud.
The conversation inside stopped abruptly.
She was discovered. But in that moment, she didn't care.
She looked down at the cake, the one she had so carefully prepared for him. The piped frosting that spelled out Happy Birthday, Stella was a mockery.
A wave of pure, unadulterated rage washed over the heartbreak. Humiliation burned through her veins.
With a guttural cry she didn't recognize as her own, she lunged forward and slammed the cake against the suite's expensive wooden door.
Cream, chocolate, and shattered sugar roses splattered across the polished surface, a messy, pathetic ruin.
Just like her marriage.
She didn't look back. She turned and ran, stumbling toward the elevators.
Behind her, she heard the door being yanked open.
"Stella? Are you insane?" Julian's voice, laced not with concern, but with shock and annoyance, called after her.
She ignored him, throwing herself into an open elevator car and frantically jabbing the 'close door' button.
In the final second before the doors slid shut, she saw them. Julian, standing in the doorway, his face a mask of disbelief. And beside him, Amber, her face alight with an undisguised, victorious smirk.
The elevator descended rapidly. Stella's legs gave out, and she slid to the floor. Her phone, the one he'd given her, fell from her pocket, the screen lighting up with their wedding photo.
She stared at the smiling faces. His, cool and distant even in the picture. Hers, full of a hope that now looked painfully naive.
With a shaking hand, she picked it up.
And hurled it against the elevator wall. The screen spiderwebbed into a thousand tiny fractures.
