For five years, I was the hidden shadow of the Royal Packhouse, an Omega kept purely as the Alpha King's secret punching bag. While he paraded my cruel sister Seraphina as his chosen Luna, he kept me locked in the dark. When Seraphina pushed me into a toxic silver lake and later faked her own poisoning to frame me, Kael didn't even investigate. He let her maids beat me half to death and publicly forced me to my knees before the rival Alphas. But the ultimate nightmare began when the pack healer revealed I was pregnant. Kael's eyes turned cold as ice. He personally pinned me against the wall and forced a bowl of wolfsbane purge down my throat, destroying the tiny life inside me. "You don't get to die until I say so." He whispered those words while whipping my back with silver dust. I didn't understand why he claimed I was his absolute possession, yet allowed my own family to tear me apart. As I lay bleeding on the cold stone floor, my heart completely died. So, on the night of the new moon, I set my tower ablaze, leaving behind a fake charred corpse, and escaped with the Rogue King. Three years later, the mad Alpha King finally tracked me down, dropping to his knees in the dirt to beg for my return. "I, Elara, reject you as my mate." I looked at him calmly, leaning against my new husband while holding our pureblood son.

Chapter 1

Elara POV:

The stone of the Royal Packhouse held a damp that seemed to emanate from the very marrow of the walls, a chill that defied the summer season. I sat on the edge of the bed, my skin a tapestry of aches from the night's ordeal.

The Alpha King, Kael, was sleeping beside me. His chest rose and fell in a great, powerful rhythm that seemed to subtly vibrate through the heavy bedframe.

He was the Alpha, and his presence was a pressure in the air, a heaviness that settled in the lungs and made the shadows in the room seem deeper.

I shifted my weight, trying to ease the soreness in my limbs. Every muscle felt as if it had been unraveled and roughly re-spun, though a faint, inexplicable warmth beneath my skin was already knitting the worst of the bruises back together-a strange, latent resilience I had always kept hidden.

This was my life for the past three years. I was the Omega, the shadow, the girl who was never meant to exist.

I leaned closer to the window, watching the shadows dance in the courtyard. I needed to know if he was there.

I let out a soft, low coo, a sound that mimicked the call of a night owl but was pitched to carry a desperate, human question. It was a signal, a plea written in the language of the wild.

A moment later, a figure emerged from the darkness. It was Orion, the Rogue King.

He moved with a grace that defied the heavy iron gates of the castle. His eyes, glowing faintly in the moonlight, locked onto mine.

Are you ready? his voice echoed in my head, a sharp, clear vibration that bypassed my ears entirely. This was the Mind-Link, the sacred connection that bound our kind.

I have been ready for years, I whispered back, my heart hammering against my ribs.

I had saved his life a year ago when he was bleeding out from a silver-tipped blade. He had owed me a debt, and tonight, I was finally calling it in.

The witch has prepared the cloak, he continued, his gaze scanning the balcony. It will mask your scent and your spirit. By the time the moon reaches its peak, you will be a ghost.

I looked back at Kael. He stirred, his wolf growling in his sleep, a low, guttural sound of possessive dominance.

He will hunt me, I said, a cold shiver running down my spine.

Let him hunt a shadow, Orion replied. Meet me at the north wall in half a month, on the night of the new moon. Do not fail me, Elara.

He vanished into the mist before I could say another word.

Half a month, I thought, the words a frantic prayer against the ticking of the great hall clock. I just had to survive a little longer.

I turned back to the bed. Kael's eyes suddenly snapped open. They were a piercing, glacial blue, burning with the cold intensity of a star about to collapse.

He surged upward, pinning me against the headboard before I could even draw a breath. The sheer force of his will surged through the room, a palpable wave that made my knees threaten to buckle and the edges of my vision blur.

"Restless tonight, Elara?" he growled, his voice a low rumble. I could see the paranoid exhaustion in his jaw-the tension of a King surrounded by treacherous council members. He kept me locked away, treating me like a prisoner, but his grip felt more like a desperate, suffocating anchor.

I tried to speak, but his command held my tongue captive. I was paralyzed, a bird caught in the talons of a hawk.

"Who were you looking for?" he demanded. He did not touch me, but his scent, a sharp mingling of pine and cold iron, pressed down upon my windpipe, forcing me to swallow a mouthful of bitter saliva.

I forced a weak cough. "Just... looking at the moon, Kael."

He stared at me for a long time, his nostrils flaring as he caught the scent of my fear. It was a sharp, metallic smell, the scent of a trapped animal.

"Don't even think about leaving this room," he whispered, his grip loosening as a flicker of twisted protectiveness crossed his eyes. "They will tear you apart out there. You're mine. Until the Goddess herself calls you home, you stay where I can see you."

He rolled over and went back to sleep, his back turned to me.

I laid there, staring at the ceiling, my heart heavy with the weight of the promise I had made.

The moon was rising, and the scent of the coming storm was already thick in the air. In half a month, either I would be free, or I would be nothing at all. And deep in my chest, that strange, secret warmth pulsed once-as if it, too, was counting down the days.
