I worked unpaid overtime for six months to secure a massive corporate deal, desperately needing the bonus to pay for my grandmother's heart medication. But the new lead director turned out to be my ex-boyfriend, Julian. The first thing he did was strip me of my title and give my position to his new intern girlfriend, Poppy. He publicly humiliated me, stranded me on a deserted highway, and ultimately got me fired. Meanwhile, my gambling father brought violent loan sharks to my frail grandmother's apartment. They kicked the coffee table and grabbed my father by the collar. "If we don't get two hundred thousand dollars by Friday, we'll take the deed and throw this old lady out onto the freezing street." But the most crushing blow wasn't the massive debt or losing my livelihood. It was Poppy slipping up in the office lobby, bragging that she and Julian had been dating for four years. Julian and I broke up exactly three years ago. He had been sleeping with her in our bed for a full year while we were still together, yet he was the one treating me like absolute garbage. Looking at my crying grandmother, my grief burned away, leaving only cold, hard fury. I pulled out my cracked phone and called a high-end real estate agent. It was time to sell the luxury Upper East Side condo Julian had gifted me, pay off the debt, and erase him from my life forever.

Severing Ties: Escaping My Billionaire Ex Chapter 1

Chloe Hayes stepped off the charter bus. The thick soles of her black pumps crunched against the gravel driveway of the upstate New York lodge.

A sharp gust of cold wind hit her face. She adjusted the heavy canvas strap of her duffel bag, the nylon digging painfully into her collarbone. The mandatory weekend corporate retreat felt like a physical weight pressing down on her lungs.

Colleagues from Harrison Properties rushed past her. They hurried toward the grand reception desk, their voices loud and eager for the complimentary open bar. Chloe kept her head down, following the crowd at a slower pace.

She approached the massive mahogany reception counter. She pulled out her corporate ID and handed it to the cheerful hotel clerk.

The clerk smiled broadly and handed her a thick welcome packet.

Chloe looked down. Printed on the crisp white folder were two logos. On the left, the familiar blue crest of Harrison Properties. On the right, the sharp, silver geometric lines of the Beaumont Corporation logo.

Her stomach twisted violently. Acid burned the back of her throat.

She gripped the edge of the mahogany counter, her knuckles turning white. She leaned in and quietly asked the clerk if the executive team from Beaumont Corporation had already arrived.

The clerk nodded enthusiastically. She pointed a manicured finger toward the closed double doors of the main mixer hall across the lobby.

Chloe quickly snatched her room key from the counter. She turned toward the hallway leading to the guest rooms, desperate to skip the networking event and hide.

A firm hand clamped down on her elbow.

Diane Miller, her department manager, stepped into her path. Diane's grip was tight, steering Chloe physically toward the grand hall. Diane insisted loudly that Chloe needed to attend the mixer to build crucial connections for their joint venture.

Chloe opened her mouth to formulate a polite excuse about a migraine. Diane ignored her, pushing the heavy double doors open and dragging Chloe inside.

The massive room was overwhelming. The air was thick with the smell of expensive cologne and stale champagne. The clinking of glasses and loud chatter bounced off the vaulted ceilings. The ambient lighting was dim, casting long shadows across the carpet.

Chloe immediately detached herself from Diane's grip. She kept her head lowered and navigated toward the darkest corner of the room, near the secondary bar.

She ordered a plain club soda with lime. She gripped the cold, sweating glass, using the freezing condensation to steady her trembling hands.

A sudden, palpable hush fell over the crowded room. The loud chatter died down to a low murmur.

Chloe's chest tightened. She turned her head toward the grand archway entrance.

The crowd naturally parted. Julian Beaumont IV walked through the archway.

He radiated wealth and absolute authority. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that fit his broad shoulders perfectly. His jaw was set, his demeanor terrifyingly familiar and icy.

Chloe's breath physically caught in her throat. Her lungs refused to expand.

Julian's sharp, dark gaze swept across the room. He scanned the crowd with clinical precision, his eyes moving over the sycophantic faces with absolute indifference. Suddenly, a subtle shift in the ambient light caught his attention. He noticed a familiar, slender silhouette reflected in the polished mirrored surface of the secondary bar. His breath hitched for a fraction of a second, an imperceptible break in his terrifyingly icy demeanor. He turned his head deliberately, letting his vision cut straight through the parting crowd. His eyes stopped abruptly when they locked onto Chloe hiding in the dark corner.

The temperature in the room seemed to plummet. His stare pinned her in place. His eyes were filled with undisguised, raw contempt.

Before Chloe could break the suffocating eye contact, a petite woman stepped into her line of sight.

She wore a pristine white designer dress. Penelope "Poppy" Sterling slipped her slender arm intimately through Julian's. She smiled up at him, her face a picture of pure, innocent adoration.

Julian's cold, hardened expression melted instantly. He looked down at Poppy. He gently patted her hand resting on his arm, his thumb stroking her knuckles to reassure her.

Chloe felt a sharp, physical pang in her chest. The visual confirmation of her replacement hit her like a physical blow to the ribs.

Poppy turned her head and noticed Chloe standing alone by the bar. Poppy's eyes lit up. She excitedly pulled a reluctant Julian across the room, heading straight for the dark corner.

Chloe tried to step backward to retreat. Her spine hit the hard wooden edge of the bar counter. She was effectively trapped.

Poppy stopped in front of her, beaming cheerfully. She introduced herself in a high, sweet voice as the new intern at Beaumont Corporation, and Julian's girlfriend.

Chloe forced a tight, perfectly professional smile onto her face. Her facial muscles ached with the effort. She offered a stiff, generic congratulation to the happy couple.

Julian glared down at Chloe. He stepped half an inch closer. His voice dropped to a low, threatening register that only she could hear.

"Keep your distance from her," he warned, the words sharp and venomous.

Chloe's survival instinct flared. The sheer injustice of his hatred burned away her panic. She met his gaze coldly. She excused herself with a rigid, emotionless corporate sign-off.

She pushed past his broad shoulder, their jackets brushing for a fraction of a second. She walked fast, escaping through the side patio doors onto the outdoor deck. She hit the cold air and gasped, desperately trying to catch her breath.
