Em 1825, morava na travessa do Caramujo, em S. Jo?o da Foz, uma familia de Amarante, que viera a banhos, e constava dos seguintes membros:

Pantale?o de Cernache Tello Aboim de Lencastre Maldonado e Sousa Pinto de Penha e Almeida. Sua mulher, D. Amalia Victoria Rui da Nobrega Andrade Vasconcellos Tinoco dos Amaraes. Sua filha, Hermenigilda Clara, com todos os appellidos paternos, e cinco de sua m?i. Duas criadas graves. Uma cozinheira, casada com o lacaio. Um escudeiro preto. Um gallego adjuncto á cavallari?a. Dous c?es de lobo; e, finalmente, uma cadellinha atravessada de c?o d'agua e galga.

Eu, Jo?o Junior; que estas cousas ponho em escriptura para memoria eterna, morava na rua de Cima de Villa, e da minha janella vi muitas vezes na sua o snr. Pantale?o, homem c?r de lagosta cozida, com cabelleira azulada pela ac??o do tempo, olhos refegados com debrum escarlate, papeira ampla como a dos cretins nos Alpes, e nariz poliédro como uma castanha do Maranh?o.{12}

A snr.a D. Amalia, se bem me recordo, era uma serpente. Orelhas, nariz, queixo, e todos os districtos da cara (nesse tempo eram comarcas) era tudo agu?ado e verrugoso, como uma mólhada de nabos velhos, em que as fitas amarellas da touca representassem a rama das nabi?as.

A menina Hermenigilda tinha cara de seraphim de c?ro d'aldeia: gorda e vermelha, cheia de vida estupida, olhos grandes como bogalhos, dentes anarchicos mas brancos como o seu nedio pesco?o, bra?o rico de tecidos cellulares, rendilhado de tumidas veias vermelhas, onde borbulhava o sangue cruorico de felicissimas digest?es de cabe?a de porco com feij?o branco.

Os servos n?o me lembra bem como tinham a cara, excepto uma das criadas graves, que diziam ser filha bastarda d'um frade bernardo, irm?o do snr. Pantale?o. Eu fiz tres dias descabellado namoro a esta rapariga, que tinha setenta e seis pollegadas. Ao quarto, vi-lhe um calcanhar aberto como ouri?o velho, e desanimei.

De quem me recordo muito é do escudeiro preto, que tinha a cara mais velhaca da ra?a de Ismael. Assobiava com perfei??o a Marìa Caxuxa, e jogava a marrada magistralmente com o gallego, supplementar aos machos da liteira, deixando-o quasi sempre estatellado no ch?o em fórma de meia-lua. E muitas vezes vi eu com estes olhos invejosos a menina Hermenigilda a brincar com o preto na sala, onde eu podia devassar estes innocentes brinquedos. O gosto d'ella era puxar-lhe a carapinha, e o gosto d'elle era, ao que parece, dar-lhe surras, que terminavam sempre quando a m?i, ou o pai, ou alguma das criadas appareciam no limiar da porta da sala.

Um meu amigo visitava esta familia, e d'ella soube eu que o snr. Pantale?o era senhor de casa vinculada, e a snr.a D. Amalia tambem era morgada, e a snr.a D Hermenigilda, por consequencia, uma opulenta herdeira. Soube mais que o snr. Pantale?o remontava a sua fidalguia a uma{13} personagem importante na dynastia goda, e n?o me recordo bem se era Athanaulfo, ou Roderico.

A genealogia da mulher diziam lá em casa que era a mais antiga da velha Lusitania, e contavam maravilhas de seus avós na India, e na Amarante. A herdeira, por segunda e inevitavel consequencia, tinha nas veias doze canadas bem medidas de sangue gothico, e por isso, a architectura externa fazia lembrar Orense ou S. Thiago de Compostella.

Entre os rapazes meus conhecidos da provincia, o meu inseparavel companheiro dos passeios a Carreiros era um mancebo de trinta annos, que tem hoje os seus sessenta e um, e está litteralmente escangalhado, como eu que o digo. Ent?o era elle esbelto, e galhardo, amigo de mulheres novas e vinho velho, como Byron, que elle vira no theatro de S. Carlos em 1813, e affirmava que bebeu com elle uma garrafa de aguardente de canna no Nicóla, botiquineiro do Rocio. Parece-me pêta, porque Byron, se emborcasse uma botelha de aguardente em Portugal, n?o nos chamava barbaros. Paiz onde um inglez se embebedar, será sempre um paiz civilisado.

Como quer que seja, o meu amigo provinciano era homem do grande mundo. Chamava-se Bento de Castro da Gama, e n?o sei que mais. Era natural de Cabeceiras de Basto, filho segundo da casa denominada do Olho-vivo, n?o sei porque deriva??o.

Seus pais mandaram-no estudar latim e logica no seminario de Braga. Bento corrompia o porteiro, e sahia de noite, a provar que a logica, sendo a arte de bem pensar, n?o exime um fraco mortal de pensar o peor que é possivel. D'essas envestidas nocturnas á moral, resultou um escandalo em casa d'um chapelleiro da Senhora á branca, e o seductor teve de fugir do seminario, onde estava debaixo de olho, pendurando-se para a rua nos len?oes.

Contava elle que o pai lhe abanara as orelhas, em quanto a m?i lhe preparava algumas tigellinhas de gelêa{14} de m?o de vacca, para o indemnisar das succulentas bochechas que deixara no seminario, emmagrecidas sobre o Novo Methodo do Pereira; e o desabrido Genuense.

A casa paterna era estreito horisonte para o nosso amigo. Uma bella manh? fugiu de casa, veio ao Porto, e assentou pra?a em infanteria. O pai, sabendo-o, mandou-lhe os documentos para se habilitar a cadete, e estabeleceu-lhe avultada pens?o para se habilitar a exercer todas as travessuras e maroteiras de que o seu caracter era susceptivel. Em seis mezes de pra?a estivera tres na cadeia, por causa de varios s?cos com que mimoseou os sargentos do corpo. Pediu a baixa, deram-lh'a promptamente, e recolheu a casa, onde n?o encontrou já vivo o pai.

Pouco depois, morreu a m?i. Bento de Castro pediu por conta da sua boa legitima alguns mil cruzados, foi gastal-os em Lisboa o melhor que p?de, e tornou para casa, onde o irm?o morgado o recebeu de bra?os abertos.

N'esse tempo é que eu o conheci na Foz, onde viera pela primeira vez a banhos, em 1825. Relacionei-me com elle na ca?a das gaivotas, e convivemos alguns mezes na sua casa de Cabeceiras de Basto. Passavamos ahi excellentes tardes no convento de Refojos, onde elle tinha tres tios, que eram santos var?es, doutos, e alegres. Ahi conhecemos José Pacheco d'Andrade, morgado de uma casa illustre, que nos ensinou a jogar o pau, como bom mestre que era! Na feira do Arco vimol-o nós uma vez varrer a feira com admiravel limpeza! Saltava como um gamo, e apanhava pela cernelha com uma bordoada o mais lesto jogador de Barroso! Fui amigo d'este homem e vi-o morrer vinte annos depois n'um palheiro onde mendigando, pedira gasalhado. O que o levou a este extremo é uma historia muito longa, e que já vi fugitivamente esbo?ada nos versos de n?o sei que livro.

Foi o primeiro escritor de língua portuguesa a viver exclusivamente dos seus escritos literários.
