The gifts of the Moon Goddess Chapter 1 2

A Leader Among the Forsaken

Lena hesitated and then took a small sip. The warmth spread through her softening the rigor of her nerves in her chest. She set the mug down and looked at Luna Celeste "You said I have power, what do you mean?"

Luna Celeste sat down in the chair across from her, and her face turned solemn. "The gifts of the Moon Goddess are rare, but she never bestows them, much like her gifts, for no reason. You were born during a blood moon, was it not?"

Lena's eyes widened. "How do you know that?"

"Because it's a mark of the chosen," said Luna Celeste. "You have a connection to the Moon Goddess that hardly anyone else can claim. That's why Kade's rejection didn't totally break your connection. It's still there, right?"

Lena's breath hitched. She had felt it, a faint but unbroken thread of the mate bond. "Yes," she admitted. "But what does that mean?"

"That means you're not just any wolf," Luna Celeste said, with a determined voice. "You are destined for something greater. But destiny does not wait. You need to accept your power or you will be devoured by all the forces that are gathering against you."

Lena leaned forward, gripping the chair's arms with her hands. "What forces? What are you talking about?"

Luna Celeste's gaze fell. "A rogue leader is rising to the shadows. Elias Voss. He's building an army, and he doesn't stop until he has destroyed everything in his path-your pack included."

Lena's heart pounded. "My pack?"

"Yes," Luna Celeste replied. "And Kade's. The Blood Moon Pack and the Silver Ridge Pack are both part of his plans. But the Moon Goddess chose you, Lena. You have the power to stop him but it all depends on if you are ready to fight."

The weight of her words pressed down on Lena. She'd spent her life thinking she was nothing more than a daughter to a Beta, someone meant to follow the lead but never to take charge. Now, two packs' destinies rested on her shoulders.

Lena stood, her hands shaking but her voice clear. "What do I have to do?"

Luna Celeste smiled a proud smile. "First, you need to learn who you are, then become the wolf that the Moon Goddess always intended you to be."

Lena stood at the far end of the rogue camp, a gusty wind nipping at her cheeks while murmurs of discontent swirled around her. For weeks she had proven herself among them and a tough grit determination and unbreakable resolve but tonight was different. The rogues congregated as their leader stepped forward a man towering over most with the name Garrick. A snarl was carved into his already scarred face.

"You've been talking big, Beta's daughter," Garrick said, spitting out the words in a voice that cut through the crowd. "But it was never about words. It's strength that leads us. You are just a girl who got rejected by her mate. Why should we follow you?"

Lena's heart raced but she kept her voice steady and her eyes locked on his "Because I'm the only one here who's prepared to stand for something beyond revenge or survival."

You can fight each other over scraps, and for what? To keep living like this? I offer a different path-you can be more than outcasts."

Garrick stepped forward, exposing his fangs. "Such great words. But can you prove it? Let's see if the Moon Goddess gave you anything worth following." He lunged without warning and his claws cutting through the air.

Lena's instincts were almost razor, sharp now as she dodged. He caught her in an attempt to kick and she responded with a lightning kick to the ribs that sent him stumbling backward. Gasps rippled through the crowd as Garrick growled and his eyes glowing amber.

"You think you can take me?" he sneered circling her "You're just a girl playing Alpha"

"And you're just a bully pretending to lead" Lena retorted dodging the blow once more. Her tone was fierce but the harshness of her words sliced raw into her insecurities. She couldn't give in now; not here and not today.

The fight escalated into a flurry of claws and snarls. Lena gasped raggedly for breath, but that only made her more determined. This was not simply a battle against Garrick; it was all the doubts, all the rejections, every moment she had been told she was not enough.

"You don't understand leadership," Lena shouted, narrowly avoiding a particularly vicious swipe. "It's not about strength or volume. It's about hope-giving people hope, a future they can fight for!"

Garrick roared back and lunged again, but this time Lena was prepared. She side-stepped him and struck with all her might connecting her fist squarely on his jaw. The crowd broke into a murmur as he doubled over on the ground groaning.

Lena stood over him breathing hard "That's not how I want to rule you" her voice pierced the shocked silence. "But I'll lead you because it has to be done by someone. Someone who cares about more than just living."

A slow clap broke the tension and Lena, turning back, saw an older woman approach. Her silver hair caught the moonlight, and her eyes held a wisdom that seemed to pierce through Lena's very soul.

"Luna Celeste" Garrick rasped pulling himself to his feet and bowing his head "What are you doing here?"

Celeste ignored him and kept her gaze on Lena "You've got spunk girl" she said and her voice soft but authoritative. "But spunk isn't going to rescue them. What makes you think you can take these rogues to a higher level?"

Lena met her gaze, and the same determination that filled her rushed back at her. "It's not just faith," she replied emphatically. "It's a must. It's on me."

Celeste studied her for a moment then nodded. "If so, we have much of talk," she said. Turning to the crowd, her voice rang with authority. "This girl has proven herself tonight. Anyone who dares challenge her leadership now will answer to me."

The murmurs died away, and a grudging respect took its place. Lena swallowed hard, the weight of what she had just taken on settling over her. But as she looked at the faces around her, some skeptical, some hope, she felt a spark of something she hadn't felt in weeks.....purpose.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

I arrived at my uncle’s mansion looking like human trash, clutching a one-way bus ticket and a duffel bag stuffed with old newspaper. My aunt looked at me with pure disgust, as if she could smell the poverty on my skin, but they needed me for one thing: to be a sacrificial lamb. They told me I was getting married to Julian Sterling, a man the elite circles called a violent monster locked in a cage. My uncle forced me to sign away my soul to save their failing fortune, while my cousin Kayla laughed and threw a torn dress at my feet, calling me a "rat from the Rust Belt." At the Sterling estate, the nightmare only deepened. Julian’s stepmother treated me like a horse she was forced to buy, ordering the staff to "burn off" my hair before locking me in the West Wing. I was thrown into a padded cell with a man who lunged at me, his heavy chains rattling against the floor as he roared with an animalistic rage that had already killed two nurses. They thought I was a pathetic, uneducated girl who "didn't read so good." They didn't know I had extorted two million dollars from my uncle before walking out the door, or that I was secretly recording every slap and insult they threw at me for future leverage. I huddled in the corner of that dark cell, letting them watch me tremble on the security feeds. I let Julian’s sister strike me with a riding crop and splash water in my face, playing the role of the clumsy, sobbing idiot to perfection. But the moment the cameras looped, the scared girl vanished. I pinned the "monster" to the floor, cut the neural tracking chip out of his neck with a hidden scalpel, and whispered into his ear as his blue eyes finally cleared. They thought they were sending a lamb to the slaughter. They had no idea they were sending a wolf to hunt a beast.
