Three years of silence. Three years of being the invisible wife in a golden cage.Maya Thorne gave Julian Vane everything-her youth, her heart, and her secrets. She stood by him while he built his empire, waiting for the day he would finally hold her hand in public and call her his wife. But on the night of their third anniversary, the man she loved didn't bring flowers. He brought a divorce decree and a cold ultimatum. He was marrying Isabella-the socialite who supposedly "saved" him years ago. To Julian, Maya was just a business arrangement that had reached its expiration date. But Julian didn't just want her gone; he wanted her crushed. Within twenty-four hours, Maya is blacklisted, homeless, and hunted by the very man she once called her world.Until Cyrus Thorne walks out of the shadows.Dangerous, reclusive, and Julian's most feared rival, Cyrus offers Maya a deal that sounds like a devil's bargain: "I'll provide the throne; you provide the fire. By the time we're done, he won't just regret leaving you-he'll regret ever being born."Two years later, the "scholarship girl" is dead. In her place stands a ruthless queen of the tech world, draped in diamonds and standing at the side of a man far more powerful than Julian Vane. When Julian sees her again, he realizes the "savior" he married was a fraud and the woman he discarded was the only one who ever truly loved him. He's ready to get on his knees. He's ready to beg for a second chance. But as Cyrus pulls Maya into his arms and claims her in front of the world, she only has five words for her ex-husband:"It's too late for your regret."

Too late to regret Chapter 1 The Anniversary Gift

"Sign them, Maya. I don't have all night."

The words hit me harder than the cold draft rattling the penthouse windows. I froze, the silver tray in my hands trembling. On it sat two glasses of vintage champagne and a small, velvet box-my gift to him for our third secret anniversary.

I forced a smile, though my heart was already beginning to hammer against my ribs. "Julian? It's nearly midnight. We're supposed to be celebrating. You said after tonight, we wouldn't have to hide anymore."

Julian Vane didn't look at the champagne. He didn't look at me. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, his tailored suit jacket discarded, looking every bit the cold, ruthless billionaire the world feared. On the mahogany desk between us lay a thick stack of papers.

The word DIVORCE stared back at me in bold, uncompromising ink.

"The three years are up, Maya," he said, his voice as flat as a dial tone. "The arrangement has served its purpose. My father's estate is settled, my position as CEO is secure, and I no longer require a wife."

"A requirement?" My voice cracked, a lump rising in my throat that felt like swallowing glass. "Is that all I've been to you? A business box you needed to check?"

He finally turned, his eyes icy and devoid of the warmth I thought I'd seen there just last week. "Don't make this emotional. You knew the terms. You got your tuition paid, your mother's medical bills covered. You've been compensated."

"I loved you, Julian."

He flinched, but only for a second. "That was your first mistake. Tomorrow, I'm announcing my engagement to Isabella. She's the one who saved my family's reputation when we were kids-she's the one who actually belongs by my side."

The tray slipped from my numb fingers. The crystal shattered, expensive bubbles soaking into the designer rug. I didn't care. "You're marrying her? The woman you told me was just a family friend?"

"She is what the Vane empire needs," he said, pushing a pen toward me. "Sign the papers, Maya. If you leave quietly, I'll add a zero to your settlement. If you make a scene, you leave with nothing."

I looked at the pen, then at the man I had spent three years protecting, loving, and waiting for. The girl who would have done anything for him died in that moment of shattered glass.

I picked up the pen. My hands didn't shake anymore.

"I don't want your extra zero, Julian," I whispered, signing my name with a sharp, jagged stroke. "I want you to remember this night. Because one day, you're going to realize exactly what you threw away. And by then, it will be too late."

I walked out without looking back, leaving the velvet box-and my heart-on the desk.

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I stood in the darkest corner of the Pierre Hotel’s ballroom, my cheap polyester dress itching against my skin while my wristband buzzed with a DARPA Priority Red alert. In front of the city’s elite, my fiancé Bryce Calloway took the stage, not to toast our future, but to publicly end our engagement and announce he was with my sister, Chloe. The room turned on me instantly, a hundred pairs of eyes pinning me down with pity and disgust as they physically backed away like I was contagious. When I returned home, my mother shattered a crystal vase at my feet, screaming that I was a humiliation and a "dropout" who didn't deserve a cent of the family fortune. Chloe and Bryce mocked me, laughing when I told them I had a mission with the National Security Agency, convinced I was either a pathological liar or a low-level criminal. They watched in horror as a black, unmarked military helicopter descended on our backyard to extract me, yet they still chose to believe I was being arrested for drug trafficking. They saw a pathetic girl who couldn't even parallel park, never realizing I was Dr. Nova Vance, the lead physicist behind the world's first successful fusion reactor. To secure funding for my research and gain a "fortress" of a name, I signed a thirty-day marriage contract with the arrogant billionaire Roman Knight. He treats me like a fraud, convinced I’m a gold-digger who failed out of college, while I quietly run global energy simulations from his guest bedroom. He has no idea that the "loser" he’s forced to live with is the same anonymous grandmaster who has been ruthlessly crushing him in online strategy games for months. "The contract is active," I told him, looking past his expensive suit. "But don't expect me to be your maid."
