My Ex Became My Sister-in-Law Chapter 1

On the day Izabella Dobson learned she was two months pregnant, she was also diagnosed with terminal liver cancer.

Sitting in the taxi, the doctor's words echoed in her ears again. "Miss Dobson, your body is weaker than most. An abortion now would accelerate the cancer. You have only three months left. Why not go home and discuss chemotherapy with your family? You're still so young..."

Izabella folded the report and slipped it into a hidden compartment in her bag. She leaned back against the seat and let out a soft, bitter laugh.

How perfect. Only three months left.

The moment she opened the door to the villa, laughter drifted from the dining room.

She looked up and saw two extra people at the usually cold dinner table.

Izabella froze.

Over the past two years, Carson Gilbert had paraded countless women past her. He loved watching her flinch and flee while he held different beauties in his arms.

Then, in the room separated by only one wall, he spent entire nights lost in pleasure.

The breathless moans and cries tore through the silent nights like screams from hell, shredding her nerves.

But today marked the first time he brought a woman home to eat with the family.

She thought she had grown used to it, yet sharp pain still flooded her chest.

She hesitated, wondering if she should skip dinner and head straight upstairs, when the girl spotted her in the entryway. "Izzy, you're finally back! We've been waiting forever!"

Izabella's head snapped up. Only then did she realize the girl was her half-sister from her father's second marriage, Margaret Dobson.

How could Carson be with her...

Carson's mom, Madison Gilbert, shot her an impatient glare. "Do guests have to wait for you?"

Izabella shrank into her seat and spoke softly. "The medical report took longer than expected."

Carson sat directly across from her. She kept her head down. She looked even thinner than before, her small face almost buried in her bowl. "Why did you suddenly decide to get a checkup?"

Izabella paused mid-chew.

Margaret glanced subtly at Carson and smiled. "How were the results? Nothing uncomfortable, I hope?"

"Everything was fine."

Madison snorted. "Trouble lingers forever. What illness could she possibly have? She's tough as nails. She's the one who brings death to others."

Izabella's hand trembled around her fork. She bit her lip hard to hold back the flood of tears.

Two years earlier, she married Carson's older brother, Richard Gilbert, to bring him good luck during his illness. That very wedding night, Richard died from a sudden attack.

Since then, she became the cursed bringer of misfortune scorned by the entire Gilbert family. Insults and mockery had become daily routine for two years.

Yet she was the true victim in all of it.

Back in college, she and Carson had been deeply in love, already talking about marriage.

No one could have guessed that those marriage plans would mark the beginning of her life's misery.

Richard had always rivaled his younger brother. Anything Carson wanted, Richard took.

His fiancée was no exception.

Madison favored her eldest son. When Richard told her he liked Izabella too, she forced Izabella to marry him.

Izabella refused at first, but her father's company faced bankruptcy and desperately needed funds. When pleading failed to sway her, he threatened to stop paying for her mother's treatment if she did not agree.

In the year they loved each other most, Izabella broke up with Carson.

The proud man knelt in the pouring rain outside her dorm, begging over and over not to end things. He clutched her legs and asked what he had done wrong, promising he would change.

The storm lasted three days and nights. Carson knelt there the entire time until he collapsed with a high fever. Margaret, returning from class, found him and took him to the hospital.

Even delirious, Carson called Izabella's name. The nurses took pity and phoned her to visit.

All she said was, "If he dies, he deserves it."

From that moment, the lover became the enemy. Carson hated her completely.

Before she could pull herself from the memory, a piece of seasoned beef suddenly appeared in her bowl.

Margaret smiled brightly. "I made the crabs myself. Try it!"

Izabella frowned slightly. "No thanks. I'm allergic to crabs..."

"What's one bite going to do?" Carson cut in coldly. "Will it kill you?"

His eyes were icy, his gaze toward Izabella full of open mockery.

Izabella's breath caught.

Back in college, she once accidentally ate crabs and suffered a severe allergic reaction with a high fever in the night. Carson ran barefoot five miles through the streets carrying her on his back to the nearest hospital.

Memories always made a person fragile in an instant.

Izabella said nothing more. She picked up the beef and took a bite.

Madison smiled from the side. "By the way, no need for Margaret to stay at a hotel. We have plenty of rooms. Besides, you two are getting married soon. No need to be so formal!"

Carson instinctively glanced across the table.

Izabella kept her head down, focused on the beef as if she heard nothing.

Something uncomfortable twisted in his chest. He took Margaret's hand. "Perfect. Margaret's parents are coming to town tomorrow anyway. We can discuss the wedding date together and settle it soon."

Margaret blushed deeply and swatted Carson lightly. "Something that important, and you didn't tell me sooner?"

A wave of intense nausea surged through Izabella. She could not hold it back. She stood abruptly and pushed her bowl away.

"I'm full."

She did not even wait for Madison's outburst. She rushed to the bathroom. The moment she turned on the faucet, water mixed with blood from her mouth poured into the sink.

It took a while for the dizziness to fade. Izabella straightened slowly and cleaned the basin and the blood from her face.

When she looked up again, Carson's face appeared in the mirror. "What are you doing?"

I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it—she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother’s trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent—or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father’s entire empire.

I sat in the gray, airless room of the New York State Department of Corrections, my knuckles white as the Warden delivered the news. "Parole denied." My father, Howard Sterling, had forged new evidence of financial crimes to keep me behind bars. He walked into the room, smelling of expensive cologne, and tossed a black folder onto the steel table. It was a marriage contract for Lucas Kensington, a billionaire currently lying in a vegetative state in the ICU. "Sign it. You walk out today." I laughed at the idea of being sold to a "corpse" until Howard slid a grainy photo toward me. It showed a toddler with a crescent-moon birthmark—the son Howard told me had died in an incubator five years ago. He smiled and told me the boy's safety depended entirely on my cooperation. I was thrust into the Kensington estate, where the family treated me like a "drowned rat." They dressed me in mothball-scented rags and mocked my status, unaware that I was monitoring their every move. I watched the cousin, Julian, openly waiting for Lucas to die to inherit the empire, while the doctors prepared to sign the death certificate. I didn't understand why my father would lie about my son’s death for years, or what kind of monsters would use a child as a bargaining chip. The injustice of it burned in my chest as I realized I was just a pawn in a game of old money and blood. As the monitors began to flatline and the family started to celebrate their inheritance, I locked the door and reached into the hem of my dress. I pulled out the sharpened silver wires I’d fashioned in the prison workshop. They thought they bought a submissive convict, but they actually invited "The Saint"—the world’s most dangerous underground surgeon—into their home. "Wake up, Lucas. You owe me a life." I wasn't there to be a bride; I was there to wake the dead and burn their empire to the ground.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.
