TAMING THE ALPHA'S HEART Chapter 1 DEBT OF THE DEAD

The rain carried a metallic aroma on the night when Ella Wolfe's world crumbled for the second time.

She found herself outside the pack's council hall, her fists clenched and breath visible in the chilly night air. Just a few hours had passed since her father's funeral, yet instead of mourning, she was being summoned by the most feared wolf clan in the region.

The Silverfangs.

A clan to which no human should ever be indebted.

The heavy wooden doors creaked open. Two guards emerged, tall and broad-shouldered, their silver eyes faintly glowing in the flickering torchlight.

"Ella Hayes?" one of them asked.

She swallowed hard. "Yes."

"Enter. The council awaits."

Her stomach knotted. She crossed the threshold.

******

The council chamber was dimly lit, illuminated only by fire bowls that cast flickering shadows across the stone walls. Three elders sat on a raised platform, stern and emotionless, watching her as if she were prey.

But it was the man beside them who took her breath away.

Alpha Rylan Wolfe.

Tall and powerful, his presence seemed to envelop the entire room. His black hair grazed a sharply etched jaw, and his cold, predatory eyes shone slightly with silver.

Rumors painted him as ruthless. Damaged. Cursed.

And he was looking at her as if she were a nuisance.

"Ella Hayes," the head elder started. "Your late father owed a blood debt to this clan."

"I know he borrowed money," Ella said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her knees. "I will repay it. I just need some time."

The elder raised an eyebrow. "A human cannot settle a wolf's blood debt with mere currency."

Her heart raced. "Then... What is the price?"

The elder gestured toward Rylan.

"His hand. His Luna."

Ella's breath hitched in her throat.

Rylan's voice emerged low, calm, and colder than winter's breath.

"A marriage. Three months. Follow my rules, adhere to my boundaries, and serve as my Luna for the duration of the contract."

Ella looked at him, this man with the soulless eyes, this Alpha who seemed to despise the idea of a wife more than he abhorred rogues.

"You must be joking," she whispered.

"I do not joke," Rylan said flatly. "Your father signed the contract. To clear the debt, you must marry me. Tonight."

Ella felt her body go numb. She was unprepared for this. She wasn't ready for any of it.

"My mother she's unwell," she stammered. "I'm all she has. I can't just disappear."

Rylan's eyes flickered with something sharp and unreadable, yet his voice remained devoid of emotion.

"She will be taken care of. Your father ensured that in the agreement."

A pause.

"But you are coming with me."

Ella clenched her fists at her sides. Anger mixed with her fear.

"My father would never permit this."

"He didn't sell you," Rylan asserted, stepping closer. His scent of cedar and storm wind enveloped her senses. "He did what he could to protect you. You have no idea of the threats surrounding him."

"What threats?" she shot back.

Silence enveloped them.

The elders shifted yet remained silent.

Rylan's jaw tightened.

"Not everything must be explained tonight."

Ella glared at him.

"I am not your possession."

"No," he replied quietly. "But you are my responsibility. And I always uphold my responsibilities."

The atmosphere felt suffocating. Too small. Too oppressive.

Ella glanced at the elders, Rylan, and the open marriage contract resting on the table.

Every choice had been removed from her.

Every option is closed.

Except this one.

"Sign it," the elder commanded.

Ella's hands trembled as she reached for the pen. A weight hung heavy in her heart. Her father's words echoed in her thoughts:

Someday, please forgive me, Ella.

She inhaled sharply, dried her tears, and placed the pen on the paper.

Her signature would shape her future.

Once she finished, Rylan stepped forward, taking the contract. His fingers brushed against hers, cold as the steel of winter.

"Pack your things," he said softly, almost forebodingly. "You're coming back with me."

Ella lifted her chin defiantly.

"If you believe I'll make this easy, Alpha... you clearly don't know me."

For the first time, a flicker of light shone in Rylan's eyes.

"Good," he responded quietly. "I detest easy."

Outside, a flash of lightning lit up the sky.

The joining of a human girl and a cursed Alpha had commenced.

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."

I was at my own engagement party at the Sterling estate when the world started tilting. Victoria Sterling, my future mother-in-law, smiled coldly as she watched me struggle with a cup of tea that had been drugged to ruin me. Before I could find my fiancé, Ryan, a waiter dragged me into the forbidden West Wing and locked me in a room with Julian Sterling, the family’s "fallen titan" who had been confined to a wheelchair for years. The door burst open to a frenzy of camera flashes and theatrical screams. Victoria framed me as a seductress caught in the act, and Ryan didn't even try to listen to my pleas, calling me "cheap leftovers" before walking away with his pregnant mistress. When I turned to my own family for help, my father signed a document severing our relationship for a five-million-dollar payout from Julian. They traded me like a commodity without a second thought. I didn't understand why my own parents were so eager to sell me, or how Ryan could look at me with such disgust after promising me forever. I was a sacrifice, a pawn used to protect the family's offshore accounts, and I couldn't fathom how every person I loved had a price tag for my destruction. With nowhere left to go, I married Julian in a bleak ceremony at City Hall. He slid a heavy diamond onto my finger and whispered, "We have a war to start." That night, inside his secret penthouse, I watched the paralyzed man stand up from his wheelchair and activate a screen filled with the Sterling family's darkest secrets. The execution had officially begun.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."
