I was trapped in a cage made of pure silver, my skin sizzling against the bars, while my Fated Mate stood outside checking his watch. "Not yet, Elena," Damien said coldly. Chapter 1

Elena POV:

The smell of my own burning flesh was the first thing that hit me.

It was a sharp, acrid scent that overpowered the damp mold of the basement. I shifted my weight, trying to find a comfortable position on the cold concrete floor, but my shoulder brushed against the bars.

Hisss.

Smoke rose from my skin. I bit my lip so hard I tasted iron, refusing to scream.

I was trapped in a cage made of pure silver.

In our world, silver is the only thing that can truly hurt a werewolf. It acts like acid against our skin and neutralizes our accelerated healing ability. For a pregnant wolf like me, it was a death sentence.

"Damien," I whispered, my voice raspy from days of dehydration. "Please."

My stomach tightened. Another contraction. It felt like a giant hand was squeezing my insides, trying to wring the life out of me.

Damien stood on the other side of the silver bars. He was the Alpha of the Blackwood Pack, the leader of hundreds of wolves. He was tall, with broad shoulders and eyes the color of stormy seas.

He was also my Fated Mate.

The Moon Goddess, our deity, pairs every wolf with a perfect match. When you meet your mate, you smell a scent that drives you crazy. For me, Damien smelled like rain and dark chocolate.

But he didn't want me. To him, I was just a Rogue-a wolf without a pack, a beggar with no status. He didn't know I was the daughter of the Alpha Prime, the king of all wolves. I had hidden my scent to find true love.

What a stupid, naive girl I was.

Damien looked at his watch, ignoring my pain.

*"Not yet, Elena," he said, his voice devoid of warmth.*

"I... I can't," I gasped, clutching my swollen belly. "The baby... he wants to come out."

*Damien didn't shout. He simply reached into his pocket and pulled out a small remote with a single red button.*

*"The Shaman was clear. Victoria's son must be the firstborn of the week to secure the prophecy's blessing. Yours is coming too early."*

*He pressed the button.*

*The silver collar clamped around my neck hummed with a sickly violet light. A magical inhibitor-a Stasis Hex. It didn't just stop me from moving; it seized my involuntary muscles, locking my uterus in a state of suspended, agonizing tension.*

*"Stop!" I choked, the unnatural pressure crushing my insides. "You're suffocating him!"*

"You know the prophecy," Damien said, adjusting his expensive cufflinks, *ignoring the violet light pulsing against my throat.* "Victoria is in labor upstairs. Her son must be born first."

Victoria. His dead brother's wife. The woman he treated like a Luna, the queen of the pack, while I rotted in a cage.

"You are killing him," I wheezed, tears streaming down my face. "Damien, this is your son too."

"Don't lie to me," he sneered. "A Rogue like you probably slept with half the border patrol. That mongrel isn't mine."

He turned his back on me.

"Wait! Damien!"

He walked away. The heavy iron door slammed shut, plunging me back into the dim light.

*The Stasis Hex held firm, fighting nature itself. My body was a battlefield between the biological urge to push and the magical chains holding the baby in.*

Then, the water broke.

A gush of fluid soaked the dirty rags I was sitting on. *The Hex short-circuited against the sudden biological shift, snapping with a spark that burned my neck.* The pain that followed was blinding. It wasn't just a contraction; it was a tearing sensation.

I tried to reach out to him with my mind.

Wolves in a pack, and especially mates, share a telepathic connection called the Mind-Link.

*Damien,* I screamed internally. *Please, the baby is stuck. Help me!*

Silence.

It wasn't just that he wasn't answering. I hit a wall. A cold, static wall. He had blocked me. He had severed the mental line.

It was the ultimate rejection.

"Ahhhhh!"

I couldn't hold it back anymore. I screamed. The sound bounced off the damp walls, raw and guttural.

The silver dust from the bars was seeping into my pores. I could feel the poison entering my bloodstream. My inner wolf, usually a source of strength, was whimpering, curled up in the back of my mind. She was too weak to help me shift.

The door creaked open again.

Hope flared in my chest. "Damien?"

But it wasn't him. It was Sophia, his younger sister. She wore a silk dress and held a handkerchief over her nose, looking at me like I was a pile of garbage.

"Shut up, you filth," Sophia spat. "Victoria is trying to breathe through her contractions upstairs. Your screaming is stressing her out."

"Sophia... help me," I begged, crawling toward the bars. My knees scraped against the concrete. "The cage... open it. I need to shift to give birth. The silver... it's killing the baby."

Sophia smiled. It was a cruel, twisted smile.

"That's the point, isn't it?"

She walked up to the cage. Instead of reaching for the key, she kicked the silver bars.

Clang!

The vibration sent a shower of silver dust falling onto my exposed arms.

"No!" I shrieked as the dust burned holes into my skin.

"Damien says you're faking it," Sophia said, tapping her temple. "Let me ask him what to do with you."

I saw her eyes glaze over. She was using the Mind-Link.

I saw my chance. The link was open.

I gathered every ounce of strength I had left. I didn't aim for Sophia. I used her open connection as a bridge to blast my voice directly into the pack's collective mind.

*DAMIEN! SAVE OUR SON! HE IS DYING!*

It was a soul-roar. I felt the drain immediately, my vision blurring.

Upstairs, in the luxury suite, Damien must have flinched. The Mate Bond, even if he denied it, meant he would feel a phantom pain in his chest when I was in this much distress.

For a second, silence reigned.

Then, a sickly sweet voice echoed in everyone's head. It was Victoria.

*Oh, Damien... my stomach... that witch is using black magic on me! She's cursing our baby from the basement! It hurts!*

The change in Damien's energy was instant. I could feel his rage vibrating through the floorboards.

His voice thundered through the Mind-Link, cold and deadly.

*Make her shut up, Sophia. If she speaks again, cut out her tongue. Don't let her out until Victoria is done.*

Sophia looked at me, her eyes returning to focus. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a dagger.

The blade wasn't steel. It was pure, dull silver.

"You heard the Alpha," Sophia whispered. "Time to be quiet, little Rogue."

I took a silver bullet for my fated mate, Derek, and fell into a coma for five years. When I finally opened my eyes, I wasn't greeted as a hero. I was handed a deportation order. Because I had burned out my wolf spirit to save his life, I was now "human" and useless to the pack. My marriage had been annulled years ago without my consent. I dragged my atrophied body to our home, only to find Derek with Anjelica, a woman I once called a friend. She was wearing my jewelry and carrying his heir. But the knife in my heart wasn't seeing them together. It was my son. My five-year-old boy, Errol, didn't run to me. He screamed in terror and sprayed me with a bottle of liquid he had been hiding. It hissed against my skin. Wolfsbane. "Go away, monster!" he sobbed, pointing the bottle at me like a weapon. "Mommy Anjelica said this burns the bad things!" I had lost my wolf, my husband, and my child. But they weren't done taking from me. When Anjelica faked a medical emergency, Derek signed a general proxy form. I was dragged into surgery, not as a patient, but as a harvest. I heard the doctor whisper, "She wants her dry." They thought draining my blood would kill me. They didn't know that my "human" shell was just a cocoon for something ancient. I escaped the hospital that night. Standing by the ocean, I threw my wedding ring into the waves. "I, Catherine, reject the bond." Miles away, Derek fell to his knees, vomiting blood as the connection snapped. He thought I was dead. He didn't know the White Wolf had just awakened.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch-a titan of industry and my best friend's father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

I stood at my mother's open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest's voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone-he brought Charla with him. He claimed she'd had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.
