The next day, I arrived at the shop early, eager to learn more. Mrs. Jenkins greeted me warmly and handed me a task list for the day.

Ava glanced around the yard, ensuring we were alone. "My mom can be... tough. She expects a lot from her apprentices, and she won't hesitate to criticize you if you're not meeting her standards."

I nodded, taking Ava's words to heart. I was determined to prove myself and earn Mrs. Jenkins' respect.

As we finished our lunch and returned to the shop, I felt a sense of gratitude toward Ava. She had taken the time to warn me and offer her support.

One day, as I was working on a particularly complex design, Victoria stormed over to my workstation. "What do you think you're doing?" she snapped, her voice dripping with disdain.

I looked up, startled. "I'm following the pattern," I replied, trying to stay calm.

Victoria sneered. "You're not even close. You're going to ruin the entire garment."

Ava appeared at my side, her eyes flashing with anger. "Victoria, that's enough," she said firmly. "Eva is doing her best."

Victoria's expression turned ugly, but she backed off, muttering under her breath.

I breathed a sigh of relief, grateful for Ava's intervention. But as I looked at her, I saw something in her eyes that gave me pause. A flicker of concern, perhaps, or a hint of warning.

I didn't have time to ponder it further, as Mrs. Jenkins called me into her office to discuss my progress.

Mrs. Jenkins leaned forward, her eyes sparkling with intensity. "However, I do have one concern. Victoria has mentioned that you're having some trouble with the sewing machines."

I nodded, feeling a twinge of embarrassment. "Yes, I'm still getting the hang of it."

Mrs. Jenkins waved her hand dismissively. "Don't worry, it takes time. But I want you to focus on improving your machine skills over the next few weeks."

I nodded, determination coursing through my veins. I was going to master those sewing machines if it was the last thing I did.
