Five Million For One Night... and One Year As His Wife. Sofia Ramirez was only supposed to survive one masquerade night in Madrid. One mask. One stranger. One mistake she would never speak of again. But the stranger is Alejandro De la Vega - Spain's most ruthless billionaire, and the man who now holds her future in his hands. When a scandal threatens to destroy his empire, Alejandro needs a wife. Fast. Perfect. And silent. Sofia needs five million to save her family. So he offers her a contract: One year of marriage. No love. No questions. No breaking the rules. But contracts don't control hearts. As Sofia moves into his mansion, into his world of power, secrets and enemies - she discovers the man behind the mask is not as cold as he pretends to be. And Alejandro discovers the one woman he bought... is the one woman he cannot live without. When the year ends, will she walk away with the money? Or will she stay for the man who was never supposed to love her? One year. One contract. One heart that does not obey.
SOFIA RAMIREZ POV
Madrid did not forgive the poor.
It glittered for them. It laughed at them. It dressed them in borrowed silk for one night and then threw them back into the cold morning like nothing had ever happened.
Tonight, I was wearing a borrowed dress.
"Mami, please. Just breathe," my best friend Lucia whispered, tightening the laces at my back. "You look like a princess. No one will know."
"No one will know I stole this dress from a lost-and-found box?" I whispered back.
"No one will know you're broke," she said, and spun me toward the mirror.
I barely recognized myself.
The black dress hugged my waist. My long dark hair fell in loose waves over my shoulders. And the gold mask Lucia had lent me covered half my face - just enough to hide the fear in my eyes.
I didn't belong at the De la Vega Masquerade Ball. Everyone in Madrid knew that.
The De la Vega family owned half the city. Hotels. Banks. Towers with their name written in gold across the sky. And tonight, their heir was hosting the most exclusive party of the year.
I was only here for one reason.
Money.
My mother was in the hospital. The surgery cost five million pesetas - money we would never have. Not in one year. Not in ten.
But Lucia had heard a rumor from the waitresses: At the ball tonight, rich men paid girls to... keep them company. No names. No questions. Just masks.
I told myself I would just serve drinks. I told myself I would just watch. I told myself I would not do anything stupid.
I lied to myself about all three.
---
The ballroom took my breath away.
Chandeliers dripped with crystals. Red roses covered every table. Champagne flowed like water. And everyone - everyone - wore a mask.
Men in black suits. Women in silk and diamonds. Laughter that sounded expensive.
And then I saw him.
He stood alone by the tall windows, looking out at Madrid like the city belonged to him. Because it did.
Tall. Broad shoulders. Black suit perfectly tailored. Black mask covering his eyes, but not his mouth - a mouth that looked like it had never smiled for anyone.
Alejandro De la Vega.
I had seen his face in magazines. Spain's Most Ruthless Billionaire. Cold. Untouchable. Dangerous.
Lucia grabbed my arm. "Sofia. Don't even look at him. That man ruins people."
"I wasn't looking," I lied.
"Yes, you were. Everyone looks."
He turned then.
And his eyes found mine across the entire ballroom.
It was like the music stopped. Like the crowd disappeared. Like he had seen straight through my gold mask and into every secret I was trying to hide.
He started walking toward me.
My heart hammered so hard I thought everyone could hear it.
Run, my brain screamed.
But my feet didn't move.
"Sofia," Lucia whispered in panic. "What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything," I whispered. "I just... looked."
He stopped right in front of me. Close enough that I could smell his cologne - dark, expensive, dangerous.
"You don't belong here," he said, his voice low and calm. Not cruel. Just... certain.
My throat went dry. "I... I work here."
"No, you don't." His eyes scanned my face, my dress, my hands shaking at my sides. "Waitresses don't wear gold masks. And they don't look terrified."
I wanted to run. I should have run.
Instead, I lifted my chin. "Then who do you think I am?"
For the first time, something flickered in his eyes. Amusement. Curiosity. Hunger.
"Someone who is about to make a very dangerous decision," he said.
He held out his hand.
"Dance with me."
---
I shouldn't have said yes.
But my mother was lying in a hospital bed. And this man had more money than I could count in a lifetime.
So I put my hand in his.
His hand was warm. Strong. It closed around mine like he had no intention of letting go.
He led me to the center of the dance floor, and the world tilted. The music swelled. His hand settled on my waist - firm, possessive, like he already owned me.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Sofia," I whispered before I could stop myself. "Sofia... Ramirez."
"Sofia Ramirez," he repeated, like he was tasting the name. "Do you know who I am?"
"Everyone knows who you are, Mr. De la Vega."
"Then you know you should be afraid of me."
"I am," I admitted.
"Good." His voice dropped lower. "Fear keeps people honest."
We danced. One song. Then another. He never let go. He never looked away. People stared, whispered, but he didn't care. It was like I was the only person in the room.
"Why me?" I finally asked. "There are a hundred beautiful women here. Why did you choose me?"
"Because," he said, leaning close so his breath touched my ear, "you are the only one here who is not pretending."
My chest tightened. He was wrong. I was pretending more than anyone.
"I need money," I blurted out. The words escaped before I could swallow them. "My mother... she needs surgery. Five million. I don't have it. I came here because I heard..."
My voice broke. Shame burned my face.
I expected him to laugh. To push me away. To call security.
He didn't.
He went very still.
"Five million," he repeated slowly.
"Forget I said it," I said quickly. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have -"
"Come with me," he said.
"What?"
"Come with me. Now."
He took my hand and pulled me off the dance floor, through the crowd, down a dark hallway I had never noticed. My heart was pounding. My legs were shaking.
This is a mistake. This is how girls disappear in stories like this.
He pushed open a door to a private terrace. Cold Madrid air hit my face. The city sparkled below us.
He turned to face me. His mask made him look even more dangerous in the moonlight.
"I have a proposition for you, Sofia Ramirez," he said.
I swallowed hard. "What kind of proposition?"
"One night," he said. "Five million. For one night with me."
The world stopped.
"No strings. No names after tonight. You get your money. I get... what I want."
My hands were trembling. "And after that night?"
"After that night, you walk away and never speak of this again."
It was insane. It was wrong. It was everything my mother had warned me about.
But five million meant my mother would live.
Five million meant no more debt collectors at our door. No more crying myself to sleep. No more watching her fade away.
I looked up at him - this cold, beautiful, terrifying man - and I knew my life was about to change forever.
"And if I say no?" I whispered.
His eyes darkened.
"Then you will spend the rest of your life wondering what would have happened if you had said yes."
He stepped closer. His hand lifted, slowly, and brushed a strand of hair from my face. His touch was gentle. Too gentle for a man like him.
"So, Sofia Ramirez," he whispered. "What is your answer?"
I closed my eyes.
And I said the one word that would destroy my old life and start my new one.
"Yes."
