After catching her boyfriend cheating, Mia Torres swore off love and walked into a fertility clinic instead - no drama, no risk, just a name off an anonymous list. Then the clinic called. Wrong donor. Wrong everything. The man she's carrying a child for isn't a stranger from a file. He's Damian Cross, billionaire CEO, cold enough to run four companies without blinking - and the last thing either of them expects is for him to demand she come home with him before she's even said his name out loud. Turns out Damian has a secret bigger than his net worth: he's an Alpha werewolf, the last of a dying bloodline, and the baby Mia never planned for is the only proof he has left to keep his position before his own family tears it away from him. Now Mia is caught between a council that wants her child confirmed by blood, a cousin who'll do anything to stop it, and a quieter enemy neither of them saw coming - one who's been playing the long game for over a decade. She swore she'd never trust a man with secrets again. She never expected the truth to be this dangerous. Or this hard to walk away from.

THE CEO'S HYBRID HEIR Chapter 1 THE WRONG NAME

The office smelled like leather and money, and Mia hated both.

She sat on the edge of a chair that probably cost more than her rent, hands knotted in her lap, and stared at the man behind the desk like she could will him into being someone else. Anyone else. Because the name on the clinic's apology letter had said Damian Cross, and she had assumed, stupidly, that Damian Cross would be some retired professor or a shy engineer who'd donated on a whim in his twenties. Not this. Not a man whose face she'd seen on the cover of a business magazine in her dentist's waiting room three months ago.

"You're not supposed to know who I am," he said. His voice was flat, almost bored, but his eyes weren't bored at all. They were fixed on her in a way that made the room feel smaller. "The donor list is anonymous. There's been an error."

"An error." Mia laughed, and it came out sharper than she meant it to. "That's a generous word for it."

"What would you call it?"

"I'd call it the reason I've thrown up twice this morning and I'm sitting in a stranger's office instead of at work." She pressed her palm flat against her stomach without meaning to, an instinct she hadn't caught yet, and his eyes dropped to the movement and did not come back up right away.

Something shifted in his face. Not softness, exactly. More like focus. Like a man recalculating a number that had just changed.

"Say that again," he said.

"Say what again?"

"That you're-" He stopped. Started over, more carefully, the way people did when they were choosing words to defuse something. "The clinic told you the transfer used the wrong sample. Mine, instead of the one you selected."

"Yes. I got a very polite phone call about it an hour after I nearly fainted at my desk." She heard her own voice shaking and hated that too. "They said it was a system error. A mislabeled vial. They said I could terminate the pregnancy if I wanted, they'd cover the cost, no questions asked, like that was supposed to make it better."

"Do you want to?"

The question landed harder than she expected, mostly because he didn't ask it the way the clinic counselor had, gently, like she was fragile. He asked it like the answer actually mattered to him, personally, in a way that made no sense for a stranger she'd known for eleven minutes.

"I don't know," she said honestly, because there was no point lying to a man who already knew more about the situation than she did an hour ago. "I wanted a baby. I didn't want-this. Whatever this is."

"This," he repeated, quiet, and something in the word sounded almost like an apology, though his face didn't apologize at all.

He stood. He was taller than she'd registered when she walked in, the kind of tall that rearranged a room, and he came around the desk slowly, like he was approaching something that might bolt. She didn't bolt. She sat very still instead, gripping the arm of the chair, watching him close the distance between them until he was near enough that she could smell him-cedar and something warmer underneath it, something she had no name for and no business noticing at a time like this.

He crouched in front of her chair, bringing himself level with her instead of looming, and for a second the calculated boardroom stillness cracked. His jaw tightened. His nostrils flared, just barely, like he was breathing her in on purpose, and his eyes went distant for half a second in a way that had nothing to do with the conversation.

"What are you doing," Mia said, leaning back.

"Nothing." He straightened too fast, put a full step of distance back between them, and when he spoke again his voice had gone rough at the edges. "You should come stay somewhere I can reach you. Until we sort this out properly."

"Excuse me?

"It wasn't a request I phrased well." A muscle worked in his jaw. "Let me try again. I would like you to stay somewhere I can reach you."

"I don't even know you." She stood too, because sitting while he loomed over her felt like losing something she couldn't name. "An hour ago I didn't know your name. Now you want me to move in with you because a clinic mixed up a vial?"

"It's not that simple."

"Then make it simple. Because from where I'm standing, a very rich, very strange man is telling me to uproot my life over a mistake that isn't even mine, and he hasn't given me one real reason why."

Damian was quiet for a long moment, long enough that she thought he might actually answer her honestly, and something about the way his shoulders dropped a fraction made her brace for it.

"Because the reason I noticed," he said slowly, "before you told me anything, before the clinic called me, is not something I can explain to you in this office in the next five minutes. And because if I let you walk out that door without understanding what you're carrying, I don't think either of you will be safe."

The word safe did something to the air in the room. It settled wrong, like a held breath.

"Safe from what?"

He looked at her the way a man looks at a bridge he's about to burn on purpose. "That's the part you're not going to believe."

Mia's hand found her stomach again, and this time she didn't pretend it was an accident.

"Try me," she said.

He didn't. Not yet. He walked to the window instead, city lights bleeding gold against the glass, and for a moment he looked less like a CEO and more like a man standing at the edge of something he'd been running from for a long time.

"Give me tonight," he said, not turning around. "One dinner. I'll tell you everything, and then you can walk away if you still want to. But you should hear it from me before you hear it from anyone else."

She should have said no. Every rational piece of her, the piece that had spent three months rebuilding herself after Jason, after the affair, after deciding she'd rather do this alone than trust another man with anything that mattered-that piece screamed at her to leave.

But there had been something in his eyes when he crouched in front of her. Something that wasn't performance.

"One dinner," she said. "That's it."

He turned around, and for the first time since she'd walked into that office, he almost smiled.

"That's all I'm asking," he said. "For now."
