Their marriage was arranged. Their love was a lie he never noticed. For three years, Mia played the perfect wife to Damian's perfect husband - smiling for cameras, sleeping in separate rooms, pretending not to notice the woman he never stopped loving. One drunken night breaks the silence between them. Nine months later, Mia is holding a divorce paper in one hand and a positive test in the other. She signs. She leaves. She swears he'll never know. Three years later, Mia walks back into the life she ran from - and straight into the man she never stopped loving. Except this time, she isn't alone. And the moment Damian sees her son's face, every lie she's told starts to crack.
Mia had learned to smile on command.
It wasn't hard anymore. Three years of practice had turned it into muscle memory - the same way she knew which fork to use for the fish course, or how to laugh at a joke she hadn't actually heard. Tonight the smile was for the cameras lined up outside the Whitmore Foundation gala, and for the reporter currently asking her how it felt to be "the woman behind Damian Cross."
"Lucky," Mia said, because that was the answer they wanted. "He works harder than anyone I know."
The reporter beamed. Damian's hand found the small of her back, warm and steady, exactly where it always landed for photos. He leaned down, said something low against her temple that made her tip her head back and laugh, and the cameras ate it up.
The moment they turned the corner into the ballroom, his hand dropped away like it had never been there at all.
That was the part nobody photographed.
"You did well tonight," Damian said, already scanning the room for whoever he needed to speak to next. It was the same tone he used with his assistant. Efficient. Approving. Nothing underneath it.
"I always do." Mia took a flute of champagne from a passing tray and didn't drink it. "Three years of practice."
He didn't answer. He never rose to that particular bait, and she'd stopped expecting him to. Damian Cross had been raised to win, not to argue with his wife in the middle of a room full of people who could still be useful to him.
She watched him walk away toward a cluster of board members, spine straight, jaw set, every inch the man the tabloids had decided to fall in love with two years ago after that first magazine profile - *Cross Industries' Golden Couple.* She'd read it once, back when it still stung to see herself described as someone she wasn't. She hadn't made that mistake twice.
Their marriage had been decided before either of them had a real say in it - his mother and her father, two old friends who'd built empires side by side and wanted their legacies tied together properly. Mia had been twenty-three and told it was an honor. Damian had been twenty-eight and hadn't argued, which at the time she'd mistaken for willingness.
She understood now it had just been indifference. To him, one wife was as good as another, as long as the arrangement kept the board happy and the company's image polished. He had never pretended otherwise, not really - she'd simply chosen not to hear it for the first year, the way people choose not to look directly at things that will hurt them.
She found her escape near the terrace doors, where the noise thinned out into music and cool air. She hadn't planned on being followed until Elena Voss appeared beside her with two glasses of wine and a smile that had never once reached her eyes.
"You look tired, Mia." Elena said it kindly, which somehow made it worse. "Marriage suits you, though. You wear it well."
Mia had known about Elena for exactly one year and four months - long enough to have memorized the particular way Damian's voice changed on the rare occasions her name came up. Long enough to know Elena had been gone from the country when the wedding happened, and back in it within eighteen months, as if she'd simply been waiting out an inconvenience.
"It does," Mia agreed, and took the wine.
She didn't hate Elena. That was the strange, hollow part of it - there wasn't room left for hatred when she'd never once had the thing Elena apparently still did. You couldn't be jealous over territory you'd never actually held.
Across the ballroom, Damian's eyes found Elena's for exactly two seconds before he looked away. It was nothing. It was everything. Mia had gotten very good at reading the difference between the two, and this was the second kind.
"I should go find my husband," she said, mostly to end the conversation, and walked back into the noise without waiting for a response.
She found him by the bar, alone for once, tie slightly loosened, looking like a man counting down the minutes until he could leave. When she slid onto the stool beside him he glanced over, and for just a second - the kind of second she would later try to convince herself she'd imagined - something in his face wasn't performance.
"You hate these things too," she said.
"I hate wasting time," Damian said. "There's a difference."
"Is there?"
He almost smiled. Almost. It was gone before she could be sure of it, replaced by the usual careful distance, but she'd seen it, and something reckless and champagne-warm in her chest decided that was worth chasing.
"Buy me a real drink," she said. "Not the kind for cameras."
He studied her for a moment - long enough that she almost took it back - then signaled the bartender.
"One drink," he said.
It wasn't one drink. It was the first honest conversation they'd had in three years of marriage, and by the time the car dropped them home neither of them was in any state to remember why honesty had felt so dangerous in the first place.
By morning, Mia would wake up in her own bed, alone, already half-convinced she'd dreamed the whole thing.
She hadn't.
