For five years, I buried my medical degree to be the perfect wife to Xavier and a devoted mother. But on our fifth anniversary, he left me waiting at a cold dinner table to celebrate his sister-in-law Savannah's success, taking our daughter with him. The humiliation only worsened from there. When our daughter had a 103-degree fever, he refused to come home, busy throwing a lavish party for Savannah instead. In front of flashing cameras, my own child publicly declared she wished her talented aunt was her mother, mocking me for being completely useless. "My mommy isn't as good as Auntie at anything. She's too embarrassed to come." Instead of defending me, my husband just smiled and agreed, letting me become the pathetic punchline of their perfect family portrait. Even my father demanded I hand over my late mother's house just to boost Savannah's rising star image. They had no idea that the legendary designer Savannah constantly plagiarized and idolized was actually me. Nor did they know I was a surgical prodigy handpicked by a world-renowned medical titan. The five years of sacrifice I poured into this ungrateful family suddenly felt like a sickening joke. I didn't cry or scream. I simply opened my phone and started a secret countdown of thirty heartbreaks. Then, I unlocked the dusty box holding my surgical scalpels and accepted a position at a top international hospital. It was time to stop being the unwanted Mrs. Harrington and become Dr. Sinclair again.

After Dumping the Billionaire, the Genius Surgeon Makes a Powerful Comeback Chapter 1

Serena's POV:

On the night of my fifth wedding anniversary, I burned the gift I had prepared for my husband.

The custom-engraved cufflinks went first. Then the limited-edition princess doll my daughter, Mia, had begged for at every toy-store window this year. The plastic curled and bubbled in the roaring fire, releasing a sharp, acrid stench, until both were nothing but gray ash.

I watched every second of it burn.

Everyone in this city believes I am nobody. A decorative wife. The pretty woman standing two steps behind Xavier Harrington at every gala, pouring champagne, smiling on cue. Even my own family believes it.

They have no idea that before I married, I was once a towering name in the jewelry design world. That I was the most brilliant protégé of Dr. Ambrose Voss, the most renowned figure in American medicine. That the investment world still tells legends about the sharpest-eyed prodigy it ever produced.

To marry Xavier, I buried all of it.

"Serena," he once told me, adjusting his tie without meeting my eyes, "I don't need a wife holding a scalpel. I just need you at home, waiting for me."

I once mistook that for a term of endearment. Now I see it for what it truly was: the spell he used to break my wings.

Today was our fifth wedding anniversary. A day I had started preparing for a week ago.

And a day they had apparently forgotten.

That morning, Mia had thrown her arms around my neck, and for one hopeful second, I thought she would say, "Happy anniversary, Mommy." Instead, she chirped, "Mommy, Auntie Savannah is taking me to her design exhibition today!"

And my husband gave me a perfunctory kiss while adjusting his tie, his eyes never meeting mine in the mirror. "Savannah's exhibition is important to her. I have to be there to support her."

He never asked if I wanted to come. In his eyes, I-a housewife-had no place at all in the dazzling world of my sister Savannah, the rising designer.

I picked up my phone one last time and opened Xavier's social media. His assistant had just posted a new photo.

There he was under a spotlight, holding a microphone for Savannah. The look on his face was one I hadn't seen directed at me in years: pure, undiluted pride. Savannah held Mia, who clutched a small trophy and beamed for the cameras.

The caption read: "Congratulations to the brilliant Ms. Savannah Sinclair on winning the 'New-Wave Designer of the Year' award! A special thanks to Harrington Group CEO, Mr. Xavier Harrington, for his unwavering support!"

My finger rested on the words "unwavering support."

So it wasn't just an exhibition. It was an awards ceremony. An event far more important, it seemed, than five years of marriage.

An icy fluid seemed to seep from my heart, spreading through my veins until my fingertips went cold.

I switched off the phone. The dark screen reflected a woman with no color left in her face.

I walked to the three-tiered strawberry cake on the sideboard. A single candle, shaped like the number "5," stood proudly in the center. I struck a match and lit the lonely wick. The flame danced-a silent, mocking celebration.

I didn't make a wish. For five years, my wishes had gone unanswered.

I leaned in and blew. The flame died, and a thin curl of smoke rose, carrying the last cloying scent of sweetness into the cold air.

Then I opened the gift boxes, took out the cufflinks, and-without a second of hesitation-dropped them into the fire.

Then came the princess doll.

With me feeding five years of hope to the flames, one keepsake at a time, watching until they were nothing but ash.

When the last of it was gone, I turned back to the table and began clearing it, scraping every bit of the cold, carefully prepared food into the trash. The Beef Wellington. The truffle potatoes. The baked lobster. Everything I had made for them, destined for the bin.

When I was done, a weariness I had never known settled over me. Not physical. A fatigue of the soul.

For the first time, I truly examined my marriage, and the thought I had buried so deep-the one named "give up"-finally broke through the soil.

I didn't go to the master bedroom. I walked down the hall, toward the study. A place I hadn't set foot in for five years. A place where the real me was stored away.

Tonight, it was time to let her out.

I was halfway down the hall when headlights washed across the curtains. The growl of a car in the driveway. The front door swung open, and the noise of homecoming flooded the house.

From the entryway, my daughter's voice rang out, high and bright:

"Auntie, you were amazing! The trophy is so shiny! You're so much more useful than Mommy. Mommy doesn't do anything but stay at home."

I stopped dead in the dark hallway, one hand braced against the wall. That was my daughter. The child I had carried for nine months.

Then came Savannah's voice, sickeningly sweet with its usual feigned innocence. "Mia, don't say that about your mother. She's done so much for this family. It's all my fault-I shouldn't have let you stay out so late."

And then my husband-low, soothing, indulgent:

"It's not your fault, Savannah. You earned this. And besides, Mia is just telling the truth."

Mia is just telling the truth.

I stood in the dark and laughed silently until I tasted salt.
