For two years, I was the invisible woman behind Hale Jones, the star captain of the New York Rangers. I baked for him, warmed his bed, and thought we were building a life together. But one morning, he coldly handed me a six-figure check and told me to pack my things. "I need a relationship that benefits my public image. Someone who fits the role." He was getting engaged to a wealthy socialite, and I was just a liability he needed to pay off. I tore up his hush money and walked away, only to discover I was six weeks pregnant with his child. When I dragged my suitcases back to my parents' house, I wasn't welcomed with open arms. My father angrily blamed me for neglecting our family bakery for a man who just played me. To make matters worse, a ruthless corporate giant, the Mason Group, had just bought our building and was forcing our thirty-year-old family business onto the streets. I watched Hale and his new fiancée smiling on the news, hailed as the perfect power couple. Meanwhile, I was left with a broken heart, an unborn child, and a family on the brink of ruin. I had given up my entire life for a man who treated me like disposable garbage. Wiping away my tears, I blocked Hale's number completely. I swore I would raise this baby alone and fight the Mason Group to the bitter end.

Torn Check, Secret Baby: My Spectacular Comeback Chapter 1

CLAIRE POV:

Morning light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows, painting stripes across the bed and illuminating the sleeping face of Hale Jones. For the past two years, I had built my entire life around this man. In these quiet moments, I felt like the luckiest woman in the world.

My fingertips traced the hard line of his shoulder, mapping the muscles forged by a life on the ice. He was the captain of the New York Rangers, a king in his world. Here in this bed, I foolishly believed he belonged entirely to me.

I leaned in, careful not to wake him, wanting to press a kiss to the faint, silvery scar above his eyebrow. He'd gotten it in a brutal game against a rival team. I loved every flaw on him.

His eyes snapped open.

They were a piercing, icy blue, and they held none of the grogginess of sleep. He stared at the ceiling with absolute clarity. My heart skipped a beat at the sudden shift in his demeanor.

I forced a smile, trying to cover my sudden unease. "Good morning. Sleep well?"

He didn't answer. He sat up, his bare torso a perfect sculpture in the morning sun. He reached for the glass of water on the nightstand, his throat working as he drank. He kept his gaze fixed on the far wall.

The silence stretched between us. I pulled the sheet higher, covering my body against a sudden chill.

Finally, he spoke. His voice was raspy and brutally clear. "Claire, we're done."

I stopped breathing. I couldn't process the words. "...What? Are you kidding? Because last night I didn't..."

He cut me off, his tone devoid of any emotion. "I need a relationship that's more beneficial to my public image. A major endorsement deal depends on it."

I felt the blood drain from my face. My fingers gripped the edge of the mattress. "Public image?"

"Yes," he said. "Someone who can stand next to me in front of the cameras. Someone who fits the role of the New York Rangers captain's partner."

My voice trembled. "And what am I? The girl who bakes you cookies and warms your bed, someone to be hidden away?"

He finally looked at me, a flicker of impatience in his gaze. "I thought you understood what this was. We had fun, Claire. That's all."

"Just fun?" I repeated the words. My chest tightened painfully. I had given up managing the main branch of my family's bakery to cater to his demanding schedule. Two years together, and to him, it was just "fun"?

I had to ask, clinging to one last, desperate thread of hope. "Who is she?"

He was silent for a moment, as if weighing whether I deserved to know. Then, he delivered the name with cold indifference. "Angelique Price."

Angelique Price. The wealthy socialite. I'd seen her in gossip magazines, always perfect, always poised. She came from a world of old money and high fashion. I felt like a complete joke.

I couldn't say another word. I bit down hard on my bottom lip, tasting the salty tang of blood.

He stood and began to dress, his movements fluid and efficient, like he was in the locker room getting ready for a game.

He buttoned the last button of his shirt and adjusted his cuffs. He treated this breakup like crossing an item off a schedule.

He glanced at his watch. "I have a meeting. I'll have my assistant contact you later to handle moving your things out."

I stared at him, this man I had loved for two years, who now looked like a stranger. His jaw was tight, a clear sign of his resolve.

I pulled the sheet tighter around myself, my voice a raw whisper. "Get out."

He didn't get angry. He nodded, as if this was the expected reaction.

He turned and walked toward the door without a single backward glance.

I watched his hand reach for the handle, waiting for him to hesitate. Waiting for him to turn around and tell me this was some cruel misunderstanding.

He didn't.

The door opened, then closed behind him. A soft click echoed through the room, sealing the end of two years I had believed would last forever.

I stayed still, staring at the empty doorway.

For two years, I had memorized every small habit of his. The way he liked his coffee. The way he reached for my hand when he was exhausted. The way he whispered my name when the world outside became too loud.

And now, all of those moments meant nothing to him.

A bitter laugh escaped my lips.

I couldn't believe it. I had once thought I was the woman who knew Hale Jones better than anyone else. I had given up my own plans, rearranged my life around his schedule, and convinced myself that love meant choosing him again and again.

How ridiculous.

A single tear slipped down my cheek as I smiled at my own foolishness.

I wasn't crying because Angelique Price was better than me. I was crying because I had spent two years believing I was building a future with someone who had already decided I was temporary.

I wiped the tear away quickly, almost mocking myself for letting him see a future in my heart that he had never promised me.

But the moment I reached for the coffee cup on the nightstand, my hand started shaking. The last piece of control I had been holding onto finally shattered.

I covered my face with both hands, trying to keep myself silent, but the tears came anyway.

His scent was still everywhere. On the sheets. On the pillow. In the room that had once felt like home.

I curled my knees to my chest beneath the bright morning sunlight, grieving not only the man who left, but the version of myself who had believed I would never be abandoned.
