As a "Dragonless" noblewoman, I was nothing but a pawn for my family, engaged off to Ethan Sawyer for profit. But my world shattered when I caught him sleeping with my cousin, Cassia, in what was supposed to be our marital bed. They mocked my lack of magic and plotted to steal my dowry, planning to keep me as a helpless decoration while she ruled the manor. I refused to be their victim. At his family's grand charity auction, I threw the ring back and publicly annulled our engagement. His mother, Lady Eleanor, instantly humiliated me in front of the entire high society. "A Dragonless abandoned by her own family. What right do you have to say anything here?" "Without our protection, you'll become a laughingstock for everyone!" When I projected the magical recording of Ethan and Cassia's affair onto the ceiling, exposing their filthy secrets, Ethan went mad. He lunged at me with bloodshot eyes, ready to kill me right then and there. I stood my ground, bracing for the impact, wondering how I would survive this den of vipers alone. But suddenly, a terrifying draconic pressure brought the entire hall to its knees. The famously ruthless Dragon King, Alaric Kensington, stepped in front of me, his icy blue eyes sweeping the room with killing intent. "Who gave you the nerve to touch my person?" Under the shocked gazes of the people who had just mocked me, the Dragon King gently took my hand and announced to the silent hall. "From this day forward, Aurora Nunez will be my consort."

The Vengeful Bride And Her Dragon King Chapter 1

Aurora POV:

The sunlight felt warm on my skin.

I traced the faded lines of a Draconic rune in the ancient leather-bound book resting on my lap, relishing the rare silence of the afternoon.

My family, the Nunez bloodline, once commanded the skies, yet our coffers had dwindled to dust. I, born entirely Dragonless, carried the burden of our survival. I had agreed to marry Ethan Sawyer, the arrogant heir to a newly risen house boasting pure Fire-Drake lineage and overflowing vaults.

A sudden, sharp hum vibrated at the base of my skull.

A Dragon-pulse whisper.

I frowned. The sender was my cousin, Cassia, a woman who had always coveted my engagement. She rarely expended the magical energy required for a direct mental link, and certainly avoided contacting me during my mandatory retreat before the wedding ceremony.

I allowed the magical connection to anchor in my mind.

A blurry image swam into my vision, resolving into a dim room, a lavish bed, and tangled limbs.

A man's muscular arm gripped a woman's waist. A jagged scar, shaped like a lightning bolt, marred the skin of his forearm.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

I gripped the edges of the heavy desk, my knuckles turning white.

That was Ethan's scar. He claimed he earned it taming a young Fire-Drake, a story he paraded at every social gathering.

Cassia's voice purred through the connection, dripping with satisfaction. "Oh, my dear Lord Sawyer, you really lack patience. What if Aurora finds out..."

The connection snapped shut.

The magical link vanished, leaving a ringing silence in its wake.

I stood utterly still.

I stepped away from the sunlight, pulling my shawl tighter around my shoulders to ward off the sudden chill.

My six-year engagement functioned purely as a business transaction to trade the Nunez name for the Sawyer wealth, turning me into the product being sold.

I dragged my feet toward the heavy desk. Its surface, inlaid with polished Wyrm-bone, seemed to absorb the light. I pulled out a fresh sheet of parchment.

I sent a message to the only person in this kingdom I trusted: Elara Hayes, my childhood confidante and a senior historian at the Royal Archives.

The message was short.

"Elara, I need a place to stay. Immediately."

I changed into a simple, dark traveling dress, tucking the old book of runes into my satchel.

As I left the place Ethan and I had shared, I glanced back one last time.

The charade was over.

I slipped out a side gate, avoiding the servants. An unremarkable carriage waited for me at the turn of the road.

The journey to the capital was long and bumpy. I leaned my head against the rattling window, closing my eyes. The image of that scar and Cassia's triumphant smile burned into my memory.

It was nearly midnight when I arrived.

Elara waited just inside the city gates, holding up a lantern lit by a glowing Scale-quartz. Its warm light illuminated her worried face.

"Gods, Aurora, you look exhausted!" She rushed forward and wrapped me in a tight hug. Her warmth grounded me.

"What happened? Did Ethan do something-"

I told her everything.

Elara's face flushed with fury. Her honey-colored hair practically bristled with rage.

"That winged lizard! And that two-faced snake Cassia!" She clenched her fists. "I am going to ruin them!"

"Easy, Elara," I said, grabbing her arm to steady her. "I have a better idea."

She took me to her private quarters in the Obsidian Spire, a towering building reserved for high-ranking royal officials. Its walls shimmered with faint magical light, a privilege of her position as a Royal Historian.

She handed me a cup of hot water, her eyes filled with concern. "What are you going to do? Call off the wedding? Your family will be furious."

"Call it off?" I blew gently on the steam, a cold smile touching my lips. "I am going to make sure everyone sees exactly what kind of man is set to inherit the Sawyer fortune."

I detailed my plan. I needed her help to access a specific location, along with a few enchanted items exclusive to the Historian's Guild.

Elara's eyes lit up, her worry replaced by fierce excitement. "You mean... you are going to..."

"Yes," I said, looking her straight in the eye. "I am going to give the Sawyer family a gift at their own charity ball. One they will never forget."

Elara nodded, her expression grim and determined. "Leave it to me. It is time that winged bastard paid."

I looked out her window at the thousands of lights sparkling across the capital city, a domain ruled by dragons.

Ethan and Cassia believed I was a doll they could play with and discard.

I would play my part as the quiet, obedient fiancée.

Then, at the height of their triumph, I would drag them down into the mud.
