I married Julian Sterling to take my dead sister's place, acting as a free nanny to his ten-year-old son, Leo. But when Leo maliciously pushed me into the freezing lotus pond and then fake-cried, Julian didn't even look at my drenched, shivering body. He scooped up his son and harshly scolded me for lacking the patience and dignity of a mother. As punishment, my mother-in-law forced me to kneel all night in the freezing family shrine. Meanwhile, Julian sat warmly in the parlor, chatting intimately with his childhood sweetheart. The icy water and freezing night gave me a deadly fever. Instead of calling a doctor, they locked me in my room with only a cup of water and a piece of rock-hard black bread. They wanted to slowly, legally starve me to death. When Julian finally came to check on me, it was only to throw a heavy book at me in a drunken rage, smashing my wrist. "Who told you to move? Always making a scene!" Looking at my bruised wrist and his disgusted eyes, my heart went completely numb. I finally realized his promise to "take care of me" was a pathetic joke. I was just a disposable tool meant to rot in this gilded cage. I stopped crying. I secretly used my own herbal remedies to cure my fever, walked out of that room, and looked at the man who thought I would submit forever. "Julian, let's separate."

His Forsaken Mate's Ultimate Cold Awakening Chapter 1

Elara POV:

One second, I was smiling, gently adjusting the collar of my ten-year-old stepson, Leo. The next, I was violently shoved into the freezing, murky depths of the deep end.

The icy water was a brutal slap, instantly stealing the air from my lungs. My heavy Luna skirts transformed into a deadly lead weight, dragging me down to the suffocating mud.

Through the dying panic and the distorted veil of water, I heard a second splash. Leo had deliberately thrown himself into the safety of the shallow end.

Then, the heavy, authoritative sound of footsteps shook the wooden bridge. The suffocating, dominant scent of pine and winter-Julian's Alpha pheromones-rolled over the freezing pond.

Julian. My fated mate, my husband.

Through the distorted veil of water, I saw his tall figure dive in. A desperate and foolish hope ignited in my chest. I thrashed against the deadly weight underwater, reaching out my pale, trembling hand toward him.

"Julian! Help me!"

I choked on the freezing water, screaming at him with all my might, pleading for my mate to grab my hand.

However, Julian's heavy boot slammed violently into my shoulder, crushing me deeper into the freezing abyss.

He used my drowning body as a stepping stone.

Water rushed into my lungs, burning like liquid fire. Through the distorted, icy veil, I watched my fated mate propel himself forward off my sinking body to reach his precious heir, who was thrashing in the shallow end.

The brutal force sent my frail body spinning violently underwater, my right hand slamming hard against a jagged decorative rock at the bottom.

Julian didn't even cast a backward glance at me. He scooped the boy into his arms, his powerful Alpha pheromones flaring to shield Leo from the winter chill.

Over Julian's broad shoulder, Leo peeked at me. The panicked expression on the boy's face instantly vanished, replaced by a triumphant, extremely wicked smirk.

My vision darkened. The suffocating pain in my chest was nothing compared to the absolute, shattering agony in my heart.

"It's all right, Leo. Papa's here," Julian's voice was sickeningly gentle as he quickly stripped off his expensive coat to wrap it around the boy.

With a ragged, bloody gasp, my survival instinct kicked in. I clawed at the slick mud, tearing my fingernails, and hauled myself onto the freezing stone bank. I collapsed on the ground, coughing violently, my wet hair clinging to my deathly pale face.

Leo pointed a trembling finger at me, bursting into theatrical tears. "Daddy! She pushed me! She said she was going to put poison in my medicine! She said her herbs would kill me!"

The temperature in the garden plummeted to absolute zero.

I barely had time to look up before a massive shadow engulfed me. Julian stalked over, his eyes blazing with a disgust so lethal it felt like a physical blade.

"Julian, please," I gasped, reaching out with my shivering, bruised right hand, a desperate, foolish hope still flickering in my chest as I tried to catch the hem of his coat. "I didn't push him. You have to believe me-"

Before my fingers could even brush his clothes, Julian's Alpha aura flared with such aggressive, suffocating repulsion that the sheer force of it knocked my frail body backward.

I crashed hard into the frozen ground. My injured right hand slammed brutally against the solid ice.

Crack.

The sickening sound of the fractured bone snapping completely echoed in the quiet garden. Agonizing, white-hot pain shot up my arm, forcing a choked, agonizing scream from my throat.

Julian looked down at me writhing in the snow. He only saw a manipulative woman putting on a pathetic act.

"Save your disgusting tears, Elara!" Julian roared, his voice an absolute Alpha's command dripping with contempt. "When your sister Rosalind lay on her deathbed, I married you for one reason: to fulfill her dying wish for you to care for her only pup! I gave you a life of luxury, yet you still can't tame your vicious jealousy! Trying to harm a terrified pup-how do you face your dead sister?!"

The blind, baseless accusation crashed over me, paralyzing my lungs.

He glared at my trembling, fractured hand. "You really think those filthy apothecary tricks of yours are some kind of treasure? I allowed you to brew those lowly herbs to nurse Leo because I pitied you! It was your only shred of value in this pack! And now you dare use your dirty hands to poison him?!"

The physical agony made my vision go black, but his words were what truly plunged me into an icy abyss.

I lay in the snow, looking down at my crushed, trembling fingers. These hands were once the supreme pride of the Hayes bloodline. I was the youngest master apothecary in the kingdom. My hands had crafted potions that saved countless Alphas from the brink of death.

But to please him, to be his perfect, obedient Luna, I locked my ancestral medicine box in a damp cellar. I gave up my magic, my brilliant career, and my dignity, just to be a free nursemaid fulfilling a dead woman's wish.

And this... this was my reward? My love was just a tool. My life's work reduced to "filthy tricks."

Suddenly, the suffocating desperation to be loved evaporated. The tears that had threatened to fall froze instantly.

I slowly pushed myself up from the ground and looked straight into Julian's eyes. My blue eyes were entirely devoid of warmth, sorrow, or fear. They were as still and bottomless as a dead well.

"You are absolutely right, Alpha Julian," I said, my voice so eerie, so chillingly calm, that Julian's furious tirade died in his throat. "My hands are dirty. And my tricks are filthy."

For a split second, his wolf whimpered, struck by a sudden, inexplicable panic at the dead emptiness in his mate's eyes.

"Since I am so vicious," I said, my tone flat, "I will no longer touch the young master, nor his medicine. Punish me as you see fit. I have no complaints."

Julian's face flushed with a mix of rage and bizarre unease. He hated this new, unreadable Elara. "You think you can play games with me?! You are confined to your room! You will rot there until you learn your place!"

He turned and carried his son away, his furious strides betraying his inner chaos.

I stood alone in the freezing wind, blood dripping from my fingertips onto the pristine snow.

Returning to my room, I locked the heavy mahogany door behind me. I walked straight to the mirror and held up my mangled right hand.

I am not going to die here, and I am certainly not going to let them cripple me.

My eyes shifted toward the Dowager's wing. Deep in her cellar lay my confiscated medicine box-the true legacy of the Hayes bloodline.

I will take it back. I will heal my hands and reclaim my brilliant career. And once I have my power back, I will sever this sickening mate bond.

I will make the Sterling pack watch as the "filthy tricks" they despised become the exact miracles they must drop to their knees and beg for.
