Elena pov
"Elena!!!" This was the umpteenth time I heard my name being called out by my boss. Just today, I had done the work of five more workers, and now that I had decided to rest, I was being called to do another task. I was fed up with my job, but I couldn't quit. If I did, I'd be stranded all my life and I had no hope of getting another job elsewhere. Before I started working under my boss here, I had gone to several places to try to apply, but all were to no avail. But then, she decided to let me work here for her although, under some crazy circumstances.
"I've been calling you for about a minute now, why didn't you answer?" My boss came to me fuming.
Most of the time, I wondered why my boss always wanted to frustrate me, maybe she just wanted me to get tired of her and quit the job myself, but I wasn't gonna do that. I had bills I had to pay and besides, wasn't I the one doing all the work? Why does she just like complaining?
My boss was a woman in her late fifties, maybe that was why she had so many anger issues, a few of my close colleagues would always tease me that the reason she always despised me was because I was prettier than her daughter. I usually laugh it off at times but I knew that wasn't the reason.
"I'm sorry, ma'am,"
"You should be sorry for your lazy ass," she blurted out to my face.
I couldn't even defend myself, I just got up and went back to work even though I was still very tired. She murmured something I couldn't hear very well, but I just let it slide, it was pointless arguing with this old hag.
A few hours later, it was time to close for the day, I packed my things and prepared to leave, I had waited for an extra 30 minutes since my boss had delayed me.
"Stupid old hag," I said to myself as I angrily packed my belongings for the day.
I walked down the busy street a few minutes from where I stayed, rumors had it that, this peaceful city had a dark story of how some rich men ruled it from the darkness and underground. Many people believed it, most of them even took it so seriously that they wouldn't come out at night once it was past a particular time. Well, for me, I never gave it a deep thought at all, I never thought any mob or robbers would even notice my existence, the only place where my existence was noticed was at work when my boss wanted to use me to her satisfaction.
Since my dad was imprisoned, and my mom left him for another man, my life had been very boring and ordinary. My mom, who didn't want anyone from her past to interfere with her newly found love, had warned me never to come near her. Since then, I have been staying alone at my little apartment, struggling to find enough money to get an able lawyer who could help me get my dad out of prison.
A few times, I would go and check on my dad, making sure he was doing well. I got home after walking for about 15 minutes. I was exhausted already, so immediately I got home, I didn't know when I dozed off.
I was woken up by the sound of my alarm ringing loudly in my ears. I got up from bed and immediately went to check the calendar to confirm if it was really that day. I smiled as I hurriedly went to shower, Wednesdays are one of the days I'm always excited about. I got to see my dad, so I was always waiting patiently for it to come. I locked my apartment and rushed down, stopping the first cab I saw. After being on the road for about 20 minutes, I finally got to my destination. I got down and walked to the entrance, but I noticed a guy standing across from the prison entrance. He was looking straight into the entrance. He had a very straight face, I shrugged my shoulders and walked in.
"What a weird guy,"
