Sofia's POV
"I heard the boss is on his way to the house now."
"Really?"
"Yes, and I also overheard one of his men telling James that he had a bad day, you know what that means right?."
"Yes I do, we better carry out our duties very well so he would not vent his anger on us, this job is my only hope for survival and I can't afford to lose it"
"Me too, be quick with the cleaning." I overheard two maids talking with fear, well, who wouldn't sound frightened when they knew just who the Mafia king was and how he spared no one sympathy while dealing with them? I for one did not wish to cross paths with him when he is in a good mood, let alone when he is all pissed.
"What's left for you to do?" The voice of the maid drew me back to reality. I almost thought she had been referring to me, had I not turned around abruptly to find out that I was alone on the stairs I was cleaning.
The maids who I had heard their voices were under the staircase and were still speaking with each other.
"Not much, just the spot over here" I heard her respond.
"What are you two doing over there?" I heard a baritone voice ask.
I couldn't turn around for fear of coming eye to eye with the mafia king, I just kept my face straight and focused on my cleaning, while I paid attention to every move that was happening underneath me.
"Nothing," One of the maids answered in shock.
"Then get busy, you are not here to gossip but to work and you better do so before the boss catches you idle" The voice said.
It was then I breathed a sigh of relief as it occurred to me that it was not the boss who had confronted the other maids but one of his men. Nevertheless, I still did not dare to turn around to see who it was.
I finished cleaning the stairs and had thought I would be spared a few minutes to regain my strength when the head of maids asked me to go clean the boss's room.
"M–Ma?" I asked in shock.
"I said you should go take care of the boss's room." She repeated.
"B–But" I stammered, scared that objecting might provoke her.
"Do you have something to say?" she asked me.
I shook my head as I wasn't sure words would form in my mouth if I opened it to speak.
"Good, you better be on your way, make sure you finish up before he returns, or you will have yourself to blame for that." She said and was turning to leave when I spoke up.
"Who is going to assist me?" I asked.
"Assist you, ASSIST YOU you say," she said. The way she responded made me feel I had committed a crime by asking for an assistant.
"Yes ma" I said, not caring that I was shaking inside of me. I was terrified that I would be alone in his room when he returned.
