“Hurry up Ny! You’re going to be late!” My mother shouted from the bottom of the stairs. “I’m coming right now!” Quickly, I grabbed the rest of the clothes that I got from my best friend and stuffed them inside my book bag. This was my first day in high school and I couldn’t be caught no where with the holy t-shirt I had on and hand me down jeans that I’ve gotten from my older brother before he went to the military a few years back.
I flew down the stairs only to notice that my mom was sitting on the sofa, half naked, smoking a cigarette while watching tv. The smell of the cigarette made my stomach turn for the worst. While covering my nose with my t-shirt, I stepped in front of tv. “Mom, I thought you was taking me to school?” “Girl get yo ass out my way! They about to read the results on Maury!! And I know he ain’t the father!” She started laughing while taking another pull of her cigarette.” “Ma, how I’m supposed to get there?” ”Walk!” she shouted while trying to move me out the way so she can see the results. “Ma, the school is well over 5 miles. Can you at least give me some money so I can catch the bus?” “Ha! I knew he wasn’t the father!” while taking another sip of her beer. She looked at me impatiently and took a deep breath while sitting up in the chair. “Look, I only got 5 dollars left to my name. I haven’t got paid yet and when I do, you know I wont have anything left over because I have to pay rent. You have to start waking up earlier cause’ I work mornings all next week.” She digged in her bra and handed me a sweaty folded up five dollar bill. I screwed up my face while reaching for the money. “Ew ma, why you always put money in there?” Smoking her last drag of the cigarette, she put it out in the ashtray, blew the smoke in the air and replied “Girl, you want the money or not?” I put the money inside my back pocket and flew out the door.
