Alpha Carl's scalpel pierced my flesh, ready to begin the surgery. His phone in his pocket vibrated wildly, and he couldn't resist answering it. Chapter 1

Alpha Carl's scalpel pierced my flesh, ready to begin the surgery.

His phone in his pocket vibrated wildly, and he couldn't resist answering it.

"Carl, before I die, I just want to see you one more time," Bianca, his adopted sister, said, her voice trembling.

She had attempted suicide.

I lay on the operating table, my abdomen already sliced open, when I heard the news.

Carl dropped the scalpel and turned to Alpha Arthur. "My Luna's surgery is in your hands now," he said.

With that, he turned and left.

As I watched Carl's retreating figure, my heart felt gripped by an invisible hand, the pain unbearable.

Tears slipped from my eyes before I could stop them.

In the next moment, a cold scalpel pierced my skin again.

Alpha Arthur spoke coldly. "Why are you crying? With me here, you won't die."

...

A sharp clatter echoed.

Carl tossed the scalpel aside without a word.

Suddenly, he yanked off his gloves and threw them into the trash. "I can't do this surgery. Get Arthur," he said.

It was the twentieth minute since Bianca's suicide attempt, and my usually calm and steady mate finally showed a crack in his composure.

"Carl, please don't leave me..." I called out weakly, my voice tinged with desperation.

Blood surged from my wound.

The searing pain paled in comparison to the agony in my heart, sorrow flooding my mind.

He abruptly halted my surgery, turning his back to everyone, pretending to calmly remove his gear.

But his trembling hands betrayed him.

He glanced at me briefly, his eyes complex.

It was as if his wolf urged him to stay.

But no wolf could wake someone determined to stay asleep.

I knew Carl had made up his mind to abandon me.

My mate, in my moment of greatest need, chose his adopted sister.

Bianca was in trouble, and he was frantic, desperate to rush to her side.

I was dying, yet he showed no concern.

"Alpha, your Luna's heart rate is spiking. She's very anxious," the nurse said. "Are you sure you want to leave now?"

The nurse couldn't stop Carl.

As I watched him walk away, a sharp ache spread through my chest.

My wolf whimpered incessantly.

Carl's departure was like an invisible blade, severing all the trust I had in him.

I spoke calmly to the nurse. "It's fine. Anyone can do the surgery."

I knew that even if the surgery succeeded, my relationship with Carl would never be the same.

My mate, my love, chose to leave when I needed him most.

The people in the operating room looked at me with pity.

I forced a weak smile.

I should have known Bianca's presence would eventually drive a wedge between Carl and me.

Asking Carl to stay and operate on me while Bianca lay dying was something he couldn't accept.

Also, I didn't want to entrust my life to someone like that.

The operating room door slid open silently.

A tall figure in a mask stepped inside.

He had deep green eyes and wore pristine surgical scrubs.

He took the scalpel, his gaze cold and resolute as he looked at me.

It was Arthur, the Alpha of the Silverlight Tribe.

Outside the operating room, Carl shouted. "My Luna's surgery is in your hands, Arthur. If I don't go to Bianca now, I'll regret it for the rest of my life. I'm sorry, Elizabeth. Arthur's skills will ensure your surgery goes smoothly."

His words brought silent tears to my eyes.

I opened my eyes and looked at Arthur.

He gazed at me in silence, his eyes steady with determination.

My heart gradually calmed.

Perhaps this was the Moon Goddess's plan, showing me Carl's true nature.

I felt pathetic.

It was just being abandoned by my mate, so why was I crying?

A shadow fell over me.

A cold scalpel pressed against my skin.

Arthur, usually aloof and reserved, spoke softly. "Why are you crying? With me here, you won't die."

I Slapped My Fiancé-Then Married His Billionaire Nemesis

Jessica C. Dolan

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
