Chapter 1 TRESPASSER

The wind howled through the trees, cold and sharp as knives. The night was darker than usual, and even the moon, half-shrouded by clouds, seemed to be hiding.

Lyra Danvers stared at the crooked sign nailed to the splintering fence post, "Crimson Night Pack Territory. No Trespassing. Violators Will Be Executed"

She shifted her backpack higher on her shoulder. Her fingers were numb, and her boots were soaked from crossing the river.

Her legs burned from the climb. She'd been running for days. Weeks, really. But today had felt different-like something was pulling her forward.

And now she stood at the edge of land no one dared enter.

'They said wolves lived here. Not just any wolves. Shifters. Beasts. Monsters in human skin'

Lyra snorted. "Yeah, right."

She stepped over the boundary line.

Nothing happened.

No thunder. No death.

She let out a breath and took another step into the forest. Then another. She pushed through thick branches and cold mist, the weight in her chest growing heavier.

She didn't know what she was looking for. She only knew she couldn't go back. Not after what happened at the shelter. Not after what she did.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a crack in the woods. A branch, breaking under pressure.

She spun.

"Hello?" Her voice was louder than she meant it to be. It echoed through the trees.

Silence.

Then movement. From the trees ahead, a dark figure emerged. Tall. Broad shoulders. Shirtless. Barefoot. His skin was smudged with dirt and blood. His eyes, golden, glowing-locked onto hers with a look that made her throat tighten.

He didn't blink.

He didn't speak.

He just... stared.

Lyra took a step back. "I didn't mean to trespass. I'm just passing through."

Still, no response.

The air around them shifted. Heavy. Electric.

She felt her skin tingle.

"What are you?" she whispered.

The man tilted his head slightly. He sniffed the air.

And then,

He growled.

The sound wasn't human.

Lyra froze.

He stepped closer, slow and careful, like a predator stalking prey.

She turned to run.

Too late.

He moved in a blur, closing the space between them in a heartbeat. His hand clamped around her wrist, holding her in place.

"Don't move," he said, voice rough and deep. "Don't speak."

Her heart thrashed in her chest.

His touch burned. Not painful. Not warm. But... charged. Like lightning under her skin.

He inhaled again.

Then his eyes widened.

"No," he said, as if shocked. "Not you."

She looked up at him. "What are you talking about?"

His grip tightened, and for a moment, she thought he might snap her wrist.

"You shouldn't be here," he muttered. "You weren't supposed to exist."

Her mouth opened. "Let go of me."

"Too late."

"Let. Go."

His jaw clenched, and something flickered in his expression. Rage? Fear?

Then he released her and took two steps back, running a hand through his hair.

"This can't be happening," he whispered.

Lyra backed away slowly. Her legs were shaking.

"I don't know who you are," she said, "but I'm leaving. Right now."

"Your name," he snapped. "Tell me your name."

She hesitated.

"Lyra."

His head jerked slightly. His breathing changed.

"You're the one," he said. "The cursed one."

She stared at him. "What?"

"You're my mate."

She blinked. "Excuse me?"

He looked furious. "You're my fated mate. The Moon Goddess sent you to me."

Lyra stepped back again. "You're insane."

"This isn't supposed to happen," he said.

"You don't know what I am. What this means."

She shook her head. "No. I'm not your anything."

But her skin still tingled from his touch. Her heart was still racing, not from fear anymore. From something else.

Something that scared her more than his glowing eyes.

"What's your name?" she asked, voice barely above a whisper.

He looked at her like he regretted everything.

"Kael Draven."

And then he said the words that shattered her.

"I, Alpha Kael Draven of the Crimson Night Pack, reject you, Lyra Danvers, as my fated mate."

It felt like someone stabbed her through the chest. She dropped to her knees, gasping.

Her head spun. Her stomach turned.

She clutched her chest. "What... what did you..."

Kael didn't look back.

He walked into the woods, disappearing into the trees.

Far above, perched in the high branches of a gnarled tree, someone watched.

A man dressed in black. His eyes burned red.

A scar ran across his jawline, old and deep.

He grinned.

"She's here," he said, voice rough like gravel. "The Moon-Blessed walks among us."

He dropped from the tree in silence.

************

Inside the Crimson night pack, Beta Cira paced the stone hallway, her boots clicking sharply. Her black braid swung behind her as she turned the corner and entered Kael's chambers without knocking.

He stood at the window, shirtless, muscles tense, blood on his hands.

"She came," he said, not turning.

Cira stopped cold. "Who?"

"The mate."

Cira's expression twisted. "You're sure?"

"I rejected her."

Cira's eyes darkened. "That won't be enough."

Kael nodded once. "I know."

"She'll feel it," Cira said. "The bond. The pain."

Kael closed his eyes. "So will I."

****************

Lyra lay on the forest floor, curled up, her breath shallow. Her body ached like it had been torn apart from the inside.

She couldn't explain it. The connection. The pain. The heat.

It was like part of her had been ripped out.

"I don't understand," she whispered.

She pressed her hand to the ground and tried to push herself up.

A twig snapped behind her.

She froze.

Then came a voice. Soft. Mocking.

"Well, well. What do we have here?"

A man stepped from the shadows. Dark hair. Pale eyes. A cruel smile.

He crouched beside her and reached for her face.

"You smell like him," he said. "Like Kael."

Lyra tried to move. He grabbed her chin.

"You're not going anywhere, little wolf."

Lyra screams as the strange man lifts her by the throat.

From deep in the woods, something snarls.

Something big. Something angry.

And something fast runs towards them.
