She's not just a girl. She's the prophecy they fear-and the power they crave. In the shadowed forests of Romania, 17-year-old Maxine has always known she was different. A tribrid-part witch, part wolf, part vampire-she is the last of an ancient bloodline that was never meant to survive. Hidden in plain sight, she's lived a quiet life... until a violent attack on her school exposes the truth she can no longer outrun. Now hunted by vampire royals, feared by wolves, and watched by witches, Maxine is thrust into a brutal world of blood oaths, forbidden powers, and ancient rivalries. And when she meets Aurel-a dark, brooding vampire prince sworn to hate her-sparks fly in the most dangerous way possible. But Maxine isn't here to be claimed. She's here to rise. Because the throne of shadows is calling... and its heir has crimson in her veins.

Chapter 1 The fog beyond bran

The wind was sharp with the scent of pine and wet stone as Maxine pulled her hood tighter. Bran was always colder at twilight, but tonight the chill was different - as if the forest was holding its breath.

She shouldn't have been out after dark. Everyone in the village of Poiana warned against it. Even her aunt, Elena, who usually had more wine than worries, had gripped her wrist tightly that morning and whispered, "Stay inside, Maxine. They're watching again."

Maxine didn't ask who they were. She knew.

Vampires ruled the east cliffs - the old castle ruins barely visible above the trees. Wolves ran the western hills - silent, silver-eyed shadows in the woods. And Maxine, caught somewhere in between, belonged to neither.

She could hear everything tonight - the crickets, the rustle of something large beyond the mossy clearing, the heartbeat of a bird in the tree above. Her senses had been sharpening since her seventeenth birthday last month. Sometimes she wished they wouldn't.

A snap echoed behind her.

She spun around.

A boy stepped into the clearing. Dark hair. Pale skin. Eyes like storm clouds that had forgotten how to rain. He wore black - not the kind from a store, but old-world clothes, tailored and silent. She smelled blood. Not fresh. Not human.

Vampire.

"You're trespassing," he said flatly.

"So are you," she answered, trying to keep her voice from shaking.

His eyes narrowed. "You're not from any of the houses. Wolf or blood. What are you?"

Maxine didn't answer. Her heart thudded, her pulse a war drum. She stepped back, but not far - not fast enough.

He was in front of her in a blink.

She gasped.

"You're... mixed," he whispered, his voice more curious than angry now. "That shouldn't be possible."

Maxine's fingers sparked - literally. A violet-blue glow pulsed from her palm, and the boy recoiled slightly.

"Magic?" he said, blinking. "A witch too?"

She didn't know what to say. She hadn't told anyone - not even her aunt - about the spell she'd accidentally set ablaze last week or the dreams that pulled her to the castle ruins night after night.

"I don't know what I am," Maxine said truthfully.

He watched her for a long moment, then smiled - not kindly.

"Then you're more dangerous than you look

I received a pornographic video. "Do you like this?" The man speaking in the video is my husband, Mark, whom I haven't seen for several months. He is naked, his shirt and pants scattered on the ground, thrusting forcefully on a woman whose face I can't see, her plump and round breasts bouncing vigorously. I can clearly hear the slapping sounds in the video, mixed with lustful moans and grunts. "Yes, yes, fuck me hard, baby," the woman screams ecstatically in response. "You naughty girl!" Mark stands up and flips her over, slapping her buttocks as he speaks. "Stick your ass up!" The woman giggles, turns around, sways her buttocks, and kneels on the bed. I feel like someone has poured a bucket of ice water on my head. It's bad enough that my husband is having an affair, but what's worse is that the other woman is my own sister, Bella. ************************************************************************************************************************ "I want to get a divorce, Mark," I repeated myself in case he didn't hear me the first time-even though I knew he'd heard me clearly. He stared at me with a frown before answering coldly, "It's not up to you! I'm very busy, don't waste my time with such boring topics, or try to attract my attention!" The last thing I was going to do was argue or bicker with him. "I will have the lawyer send you the divorce agreement," was all I said, as calmly as I could muster. He didn't even say another word after that and just went through the door he'd been standing in front of, slamming it harshly behind him. My eyes lingered on the knob of the door a bit absentmindedly before I pulled the wedding ring off my finger and placed it on the table. I grabbed my suitcase, which I'd already had my things packed in and headed out of the house.
