Chapter 1 The Night I Met Her

Chapter 1: The Night I Met Her

Jason's Point of View

The city was loud. Cars honked, and lights flashed outside my tiny apartment window. I sat on my couch, sketching in my notebook, the pencil scratching softly. My aunt used to say drawing kept me out of trouble, and I liked it. It made me feel calm. But tonight, I felt strange, like something big was coming.

A knock at the door made me jump. I wasn't expecting anyone. My heart beat faster as I got up, my sneakers squeaking on the wood floor. I opened the door, and there she was. a woman with dark hair and gray eyes that looked right through me. She was tall, almost as tall as me, and her face was so pretty it made my stomach flip.

"Hi," I said, my voice shaky. "Can I help you?"

She didn't answer. Her hands shook, and her eyes looked wild, like a cat about to pounce. "Can I come in?" she asked, her voice soft but sharp, like a knife hidden in silk.

"Uh, sure," I said, stepping back. I didn't know why I let her in. Something about her made it hard to say no. She walked past me, her boots clicking on the floor. She wore a black leather jacket and jeans that hugged her like they were made for her. I shut the door, feeling my heart thump.

"Want some tea?" I asked, trying to be polite. My aunt always said to offer guests something. I didn't know what else to do.

She nodded, not looking at me. She sat on my couch, her fingers twisting together like she was nervous. I went to the kitchen, grabbed a mug, and filled it with hot water from the kettle. My hands fumbled with the tea bag. Who was this lady? Why was she here?

I brought the tea and set it on the table. "I'm Jason," I said, sitting across from her. "What's your name?"

She looked up, her gray eyes locking on mine. "Veronica," she said, her voice low. She didn't touch the tea. Instead, she leaned closer, her eyes flicking to my neck. I felt a chill, like someone dropped ice down my shirt.

"You okay?" I asked. She was shaking harder now, her face pale. I reached out to touch her arm, thinking maybe she was sick. Big mistake.

She moved so fast I didn't see it. One second, I was sitting there; the next, she had me pinned to the floor. My back hit the wood hard, and I gasped. Her hands were like steel, holding my arms down. Her face was close to mine, and her eyes glowed like storm clouds.

"Stop!" I yelled, trying to push her off. I'm strong.I work out, but she was stronger. Way stronger. Her teeth grazed my neck, and then pain shot through me, sharp and hot. I felt wet warmth, and my head got fuzzy. She was... drinking my blood? No way. This wasn't real. I tried to fight, but my arms felt heavy, like they were made of lead.

My vision blurred. The room spun. I thought I was going to pass out, but I didn't. Veronica pulled back, her lips red with my blood. She looked shocked, like she didn't expect me to still be awake. "Forget this," she whispered, her eyes glowing brighter. "Forget me."

I blinked, my head pounding. She stood up and walked out, the door slamming behind her. I lay there, breathing hard, my hand touching my neck. There were two small holes, still wet. My shirt was sticky with blood. I wasn't dreaming. This was real.

The next morning, I dragged myself to college. My neck ached, and my head felt like it was full of cotton. I kept touching the bandage I'd put on the bite marks. In class, I couldn't focus. My professor droned on about art history, but all I could think about was Veronica. Her face. Her strength. Her teeth.

Then she walked in.

She stood in the doorway of the lecture hall, her dark hair falling over her shoulders. Every head turned. Girls whispered, and guys stared. She was so beautiful it hurt to look at her. But when her gray eyes found me, my stomach dropped. I grabbed my bag and bolted out the back door.

I heard her footsteps behind me, fast and sure. I ducked into an alley near campus, my heart racing. She caught up, blocking my way. "Why didn't you forget?" she asked, her voice sharp. She stepped closer, and I backed up until I hit a brick wall.

"I don't know!" I snapped. "Why'd you attack me? What are you?"

She tilted her head, like she was studying me. "You're not scared," she said, almost to herself. "You should be."

"I'm plenty scared," I said, my voice shaking. "But I'm also mad. You bit me! You can't just... do that and act like it's okay!"

Her lips twitched, almost a smile. "You're different," she said. "Most people would be dead. Or begging." She stepped even closer, her breath warm on my face. "Stop hiding from me, Jason. It makes me... cranky."

I swallowed hard. "We're not friends. Or anything. Leave me alone."

She laughed, a low sound that made my skin tingle. Then she grabbed my shirt, pulled me down, and kissed her lips cold and soft, but they burned like fire. I froze, my heart hammering. She pulled back, her eyes dark. "If you hide from me again," she whispered, "I will kill you."

She walked away, leaving me shaking against the wall. I didn't believe her. Not really. But my neck throbbed, and I knew she wasn't normal.

That night, I went to a party on campus. I didn't want to, but my friend Virgil said it'd be fun. I needed to clear my head. I'd spent all day on my laptop, reading about vampires. Stakes, garlic, sunlight. none of it sounded real, but I'd felt her teeth. I'd seen her eyes. I shoved a wooden stake from my art supplies into my jacket, just in case.

The party was loud, with music blasting and people laughing. I sipped a soda, scanning the crowd. No sign of Veronica. Maybe she was gone. Maybe I was safe. I started to relax, my shoulders loosening. I told Virgil I was heading home early.

Outside, the air was cool. I walked fast, the stake heavy in my pocket. My apartment wasn't far. I turned a corner, and there she was.Veronica, standing under a streetlight, her eyes glowing like a wolf's.

"Jason," she said, her voice sweet but dangerous. I reached for the stake, but she was too fast. Her hand slammed into my chest, knocking me against a wall. The air rushed out of me. I tried to swing the stake, but she grabbed my wrist and twisted it. The stake clattered to the ground.

"Please," I gasped, my voice weak. "Don't."

She didn't listen. Her teeth sank into my neck again, and pain exploded. I fought, but it was like pushing a mountain. My knees buckled, and the world went dark.

When I woke up, I was on my couch. My shirt was gone, and my neck burned. Veronica sat across from me, her legs crossed, watching me like I was a puzzle. "You're still alive," she said, sounding surprised.

I tried to sit up, but my head spun. "Why do you keep doing this?" I croaked.

She stood and walked over, her boots clicking. She knelt in front of me, her face close. "Because I can't stop," she whispered. Her fingers brushed my cheek, and my skin tingled. "You're not like other humans, Jason. You're... special."

I wanted to push her away, but my body wouldn't move. Her eyes softened, and for a second, she didn't look like a monster. She looked like a person. "I'm sorry," she said, so quiet I almost missed it. Then she leaned in, her lips brushing mine. It wasn't like the kiss in the alley. This one was slow, warm, like she meant it.

I should've been scared. I should've hated her. But my heart raced for a different reason now. Her hands slid to my shoulders, and I didn't stop her. I didn't want to. We kissed again, deeper, and I felt her teeth graze my neck. not biting, just teasing. My head screamed to run, but my body stayed.

Hours later, we were tangled on the couch, her head on my chest. My neck had new marks, but I wasn't dizzy anymore. I felt... stronger. Like her bites were waking something up inside me. She looked up, her gray eyes soft. "I wasn't supposed to care about you," she said.

"Then why do you?" I asked, my voice hoarse.

She didn't answer. Instead, she kissed me again, and I let her. I didn't know what was happening to me. I didn't know why I wasn't dead. But I knew one thing: Veronica was in trouble, and I was in deep trouble.

As she fell asleep in my arms, a shadow moved outside my window. It wasn't a person. It was too big, too fast. Red eyes glowed in the dark, watching us. My heart stopped. Was it coming for her ? or for me?.
