"This is an arranged marriage, so don't expect anything from me. No love, no emotional attachment." ----- Five years ago, Grey Carter made a wrong choice and watched his wife plunge into the sea. Their marriage began as an arranged marriage between their two families-both powerful, both needed the others for their companies to reach new heights. But Ariel, his unwanted bride became his obsession - until the day he failed her. He searched for her in vain, drowning in regret. Until he found a bundle of joy on his doorstep - a surviving son from Ariel. Now, five years later, his boy tugged on his sleeves, pointing at a child with Grey's eyes. "Daddy, I found my brother."
Grey Carter was about to sign the document when his assistant barged into the room.
The frown that was etched on his handsome face was impossible to miss. This was a contract that would fetch him billions of dollars. Why did Reginald choose this time to interrupt?
"Sir, Madam has been kidnapped."
The pen fell from Grey's hands. The frown was immediately replaced with shock and worry. He sprang up from his seat.
"Ariel, kidnapped? Get the police immediately."
He made a dash for the door, forgetting the contract he was eager to sign a few seconds ago. The business partner looked on, unable to utter a single word. He too would benefit so well from the contract and it would be a huge loss if Grey didn't sign it.
"Sign the damn contract, then you can fucking leave," he wanted to yell, but he knew better.
Grey loved his wife so much that he would knock off his teeth if he asked him to ignore her for a contract.
On getting to the door, Grey realized his assistant hadn't moved from where he stood.
"Reginald, do you have a death wish? Call the police now!"
"Sir, you need to see this."
"Show me that after you've saved my wife," Grey snapped. Then he took out his phone to call the police.
"Sir, it's Lucas."
Grey stopped in his tracks.
"Lucas?"
"Yes, sir."
He hurried over and handed the phone to Grey.
"I have your wife. If you want to save her, get the document for the company ready. Don't involve the police, or I'll have her killed before they even get here."
Grey's eyes widened as he read Lucas's message.
"That bloody bastard, how dare he mess with my woman?" He cursed.
The next video was Ariel. She was pushed roughly to a seat and tied up. Then Lucas's voice was heard, "You know what to do to save her." He laughed wickedly. Ariel screamed loudly, and then the screen went blank.
"Get the men ready. That bastard has crossed the line. I'll destroy him."
"Yes, sir," his assistant responded and went to do as his boss instructed.
Lucas was Grey's step brother and his biggest rival. He had been getting on his nerves a number of times. Most times, Grey pulled through it without as much as lifting a finger. He was way more powerful than Lucas.
The last time they clashed, he had broken Lucas's arms. It took months in the hospital to get them back in good working condition.
Lucas worked hand in hand with Grey's ex, Vivian, who was pissed that Grey got over her after she caused him pain.
However, Lucas tried a very dangerous approach this time, after all his attempts failed. His wife, who was his Achilles' heel.
Grey was cold, brutal, and ruthless, but for Ariel, he was the warmest and sweetest soul in the world. He would do anything to protect her, and everyone in the state knew that.
Three minutes later, Grey and his men were in front of his house, ready to set off. He gave them instructions on what to do, and soon they hit the road.
Lucas was already waiting when he got to the river. He had requested to meet with Grey in a more secluded island-like setting. During this time of the day, no cars took that route.
The river where Lucas had chosen to meet Grey had a landscape that rose up to form a rugged cliff. The cliff face was dotted with trees and shrubs, their roots digging deep into the rocky soil.
Lucas stood at the edge of the cliff, his eyes fixed on the river below. He was careful not to get too close to the edge, well aware that any missed step could send him tumbling into the water.
Behind him, in a safe position, were Ariel and Vivian, his captives. Ariel looked frightened, and that brought warmth to Lucas's heart. She didn't deserve peace for being Grey's wife.
Lucas had arrived at the meeting spot in a private helicopter. It landed on a flat area near the top of the cliff. It sat quietly, its engines humming softly.
Grey showed up shortly, he parked his vehicle near the bridge and walked down to the riverbank. He had come alone, he didn't go up to the cliff, rather he stood at the water's edge.
Lucas grinned, pleased that Grey had followed his instructions for the very first time.
Satisfied, Lucas nodded to his man.
"Everything looks good. Make them stand."
As Grey watched, two women were pulled up and pushed into view. They were the only two women he had loved his entire life: Vivian, his ex, and Ariel, his wife.
Grey frowned. Wasn't Vivian working with Lucas? Why was he keeping her hostage and causing her pain?
Lucas took out a small intercom device and spoke into it.
"You have to save one of these ladies. To save either of them and to have her in one piece, you have to sign over your rights in the company to me."
Grey clenched his fist.
How bloody dare Lucas! Has he gone crazy?
"If you choose to save Ariel," Lucas continued, grabbing Ariel's hair roughly, "I'll force peanuts into Vivian's mouth."
Lucas watched Grey's expression closely. He knew Grey would surely save Ariel; even a blind man could tell how much Grey loved Ariel, his wife.
He had long gotten over Vivian, but Grey associated the word "sick" or "allergy" with bad memories. His mother had died of sickness before help could get to her. As a result, he had sworn never to neglect a sick person.
Vivian was allergic to peanuts, and just one of them was enough to make her gasp for breath. Watching Vivian struggle because of peanuts would surely cause him pain and remind him of his mother's death.
Lucas knew that too well, so he put him in a difficult situation.
"And if you decide to save Vivian," Lucas continued, strolling to Vivian and stroking her hair, "I'll push your beloved wife down the cliff."
Grey's voice came through the intercom device,
"Don't fucking touch her, or I'll kill you."
However, Lucas turned sharply and slapped Ariel hard across the face. A scream escaped her lips, and she fell to the floor.
"Grey, please, help me..." she cried.
"Lucas! Let her go!" Grey yelled.
"You seem to forget that I have the upper hand here. Maybe you should start by being a little more polite."
"Lucas, you've crossed the line! Leave my wife out of our issues, you..."
Lucas grinned. He loved being in charge for the first time. It felt so good to wield power against Grey.
"Your time starts now. Who will you save?"
Grey gritted his teeth and clenched his fist. Lucas dared to lay a hand on his wife. He would make sure that he never gets to use that hand in his lifetime.
"I'll save Vivian," he said.
