Chapter 1 A University Encounter

Anna Leroy adjusted her glasses as she exited the lecture hall, clutching her criminal law textbook tightly against her chest. The bustling courtyard of the university campus buzzed with energy, but her mind was elsewhere-focused, as always, on her studies and her goal of becoming a public defender. She had no time for distractions, especially not the kind that walked with expensive shoes and a last name known in every political circle in the country.

But fate, as it often does, had other plans.

"Hey, you dropped something," a voice called out behind her.

Anna turned and saw him-Nathan Elridge, tall, casually elegant, with an effortless confidence that came from years of privilege. He held out her pen, one she hadn't even noticed was missing.

"Thanks," she said, taking it cautiously. Their fingers brushed, just for a second, but it sent a current through her spine she couldn't explain.

"No problem. You're Anna, right? You asked that question about judicial reform last week?" he asked.

She nodded slowly, surprised he'd remembered. "Yes... I did."

Nathan smiled. "Impressive. Not many students challenge the professor like that."

"I just believe in asking questions," Anna replied, defensive. "Blind obedience doesn't bring justice."

"I agree," he said. "I'm Nathan, by the way."

She gave a polite smile. "I know who you are."

Of course she did. Nathan Elridge was the golden boy of the law school-the senator's son, heir to a political dynasty, and already being groomed for a future campaign. Most girls on campus would melt under his gaze, but Anna had promised herself she wouldn't fall into that trap.

"Do you usually compliment strangers on their critical thinking?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Only when they deserve it," he said, then added with a grin, "And when I'm trying to find an excuse to invite them to something."

Anna hesitated. "Invite me?"

"There's a fundraiser this weekend. My father's hosting it, but I promise it's less stuffy than it sounds. Free food, decent music, and a lot of networking. You'd fit in better than you think."

She opened her mouth to decline, then paused. Her mind screamed caution-this world wasn't hers. But something in Nathan's tone, in the way he looked at her like she wasn't just another face in the crowd, made her reconsider.

"Alright," she said. "I'll think about it."

**

Saturday night came faster than expected. Standing in front of the Elridge estate-a mansion so large it made museums look modest-Anna regretted agreeing. She wore her most elegant dress, borrowed from a friend, and kept smoothing the fabric nervously.

Nathan greeted her at the entrance with a warmth that put her at ease. "I'm glad you came."

Inside, chandeliers cast golden lights over marble floors. Men in tuxedos and women in designer gowns floated from room to room, sipping champagne and discussing elections like they were weekend plans.

Anna was overwhelmed.

"This is insane," she whispered to Nathan.

He chuckled. "Welcome to my world. I hate it too, sometimes."

They wandered through the crowds, Nathan introducing her to donors, campaign managers, and political advisors who barely registered her presence. But she noticed everything-the way eyes followed her, assessing her. She wasn't one of them, and they knew it.

Later that night, as the music slowed and the ballroom emptied slightly, Nathan led her to a quiet terrace overlooking the city. The lights below twinkled like stars, but it was the look in Nathan's eyes that made her breath catch.

"You're different," he said softly.

"Different how?"

"You're not impressed by any of this. That's rare."

She looked down. "Because I know what's behind the curtain. Power like this doesn't come without cost."

"And yet... here you are. With me."

There was silence.

"I shouldn't be," she murmured.

"But you are," he said, stepping closer.

Then, without warning, he kissed her.

It wasn't rehearsed or polished like everything else in Nathan's world. It was real-impulsive, raw, and filled with something deeper than either of them could admit. When they pulled away, the night felt charged with possibilities neither had planned for.

Over the next few weeks, Anna tried to convince herself it was nothing. Just a moment. A mistake.

But Nathan kept texting. Then calling. Then waiting for her outside her classes with coffee and shy smiles. She resisted-at first. Her world didn't have room for distractions, and certainly not for the senator's son.

But Nathan was persistent.

He invited her to dinner at a quiet bistro where no one recognized him. He listened when she ranted about inequality in the justice system. He quoted her favorite authors. He held her hand when she talked about her late father. Slowly, cautiously, Anna let herself fall.

And one night, she didn't go home.

It was supposed to be a secret. A private connection between two people from different worlds. But secrets have a way of escaping.

**

Anna stared at the stick in her hand, heart thundering. Two pink lines. It was positive.

"No... no," she whispered. "This can't be happening."

Her life had been planned to the minute-graduation, internship, bar exam. Not this. Not now. Not with him.

She thought of telling Nathan immediately, but fear paralyzed her. How would he react? What would his family do? The Elridges weren't just rich-they were dangerous when threatened.

Anna decided to wait.

Days passed in a blur. She avoided Nathan's calls. She skipped classes. She stared at her ceiling at night, hands on her stomach, wondering if she was already a mother.

Then, one afternoon, she walked onto campus and found Nathan waiting for her. His face lit up when he saw her, but he quickly noticed the change in her expression.

"Anna? What's wrong?"

She opened her mouth, then closed it again.

"Talk to me," he urged.

She took a breath. "I'm pregnant."

Silence.

His jaw tightened. He ran a hand through his hair, stepping back, then forward again, torn.

"Are you sure?" he asked, voice low.

She nodded, eyes glistening.

And then came the words she didn't expect.

"I'm with you. We'll figure it out."

**

But the news didn't remain between them.

Within days, the senator himself summoned Anna to his office. It wasn't a request.

She arrived at a private wing of the estate. The senator sat behind a massive desk, fingers steepled, expression unreadable.

"You've made quite a mess, Ms. Leroy," he said coldly.

"I didn't plan this," Anna replied, her voice steady.

"Of course you didn't," he said, voice dripping with sarcasm. "And now, you expect what? A place in this family? A payout?"

Anna's eyes narrowed. "I want nothing from you. I'll raise this child on my own if I have to."

The senator's smile was thin. "No, Ms. Leroy. You won't. This baby-if it even exists-threatens everything I've built. So let me be very clear. This situation will disappear."

"You can't threaten me," she said, rising.

"I'm not threatening. I'm offering options. A quiet clinic. A generous check. And the assurance that your future remains intact... as long as you walk away."

Anna left without another word.

**

That night, she told Nathan everything. His face darkened with rage.

"They can't control this," he said. "I won't let them."

"They're your family, Nathan."

"You're my family now."

They clung to each other like survivors on a stormy sea. But deep down, Anna knew the worst was yet to come.

**

A few days later, her name was leaked to the tabloids.

"Student Seduces Senator's Son," the headline read.

Paparazzi camped outside her building. Her professors looked at her differently. Friends avoided her. Her scholarship was suddenly "under review."

Anna couldn't breathe.

Then came the final blow-she collapsed in class and woke up in a hospital bed. The stress, the pressure... it was too much.

Nathan was there when she opened her eyes. "We're not running anymore," he said. "We're fighting."

Anna nodded weakly. For the first time, she didn't feel alone.

Not anymore.
