On the day I had my surgery, my fiancé was busy celebrating Sylvie's birthday-Sylvie, his idealized love from the past. He and my in-laws were all caught up in the festivities, leaving me completely forgotten. After the procedure, I managed to reach my fiancé on the phone, but his response was dismissive, "It's just a minor illness. There's no need to make a fuss over nothing." By the time he visited me, I was already handling the discharge paperwork on my own. Once home, I calmly removed my engagement ring, a silent declaration of my decision. I couldn't even recall how many times they had let me down. I chose to stop hoping for more. I packed my belongings and accepted the overseas offer I received a few days ago. They assumed life would continue as usual, unaware that this time, I was resolute in my decision to leave for good.

Chapter 1

On the day of my surgery, my fiancé, Connor Stevens was busy celebrating Sylvie Holden's birthday. She was his first love.

He and my in-laws were so occupied with the celebration that they completely forgot about me.

After the surgery, I managed to call him, but he said, "It's just a minor surgery. You don't overreact."

When he remembered to visit me later, I was already going through the discharge formalities alone.

After I got home, I calmly removed the engagement ring from my finger.

I couldn't even remember how many times they'd let me down. I decided not to hold onto any more expectations.

I packed my luggage and accepted the offer from abroad that I had received a few days earlier.

They assumed life would go on as usual, but they were unaware that I was leaving forever this time.

When Connor pushed open the door, I had just placed the ring into the drawer.

Just over a month ago, we got engaged.

He put his hands in his pockets and seemed to have forgotten that I had recently undergone surgery. He simply said, "Why don't you cook dinner?"

In the past, I would have stood up immediately.

But I focused on what I was doing and ignored him this time.

Connor received no response and raised his eyebrows. He forcefully pulled me up. "What's wrong with you? Didn't you hear me?"

He hadn't noticed that I had already taken off the engagement ring.

Frowning, he continued to order me around, "Sylvie just returned from abroad. The servant is off this evening. Make a few of your specialties for her. My parents practically see her as family. You'd better be nice to her too."

I glanced at him flatly and maintained a blank expression.

Connor was surprised by my attitude.

In the past, when they asked me to cook, I would always try to please them by asking what dishes they wanted.

But I couldn't care less this time.

Connor paused and then chuckled as if he'd figured something out. "Are you afraid Sylvie will steal me away? I see her as a sister, so you'd better not target her."

We stood facing each other. He looked at me and seemingly wanted me to hold back my bad mood.

It wasn't until he noticed my slightly reddened eyes that his accusatory gaze softened a bit.

After a while, he said, "Sylvie has been abroad for seven years. It's not easy for her to be back. Can't you be more considerate? I knew you were upset about what happened on the day you underwent the surgery. But it was just a vocal cord operation. What's the big deal? You're still alive, aren't you?"

I remained silent while walking to the kitchen to wash and prepare the vegetables.

In Connor's eyes, my surgery was far less important than Louise's birthday.

He didn't understand how I was fearful and the faint hope I had.

My vocal cords were severely damaged due to both physical and psychological reasons. It even developed growths.

But I knew Connor used to love hearing me sing, so I took the risk to undergo the surgery, even though the doctor told me that a full recovery was impossible.

I naively thought he would be there for me to support me to overcome everything so that I could sing for him again.

But what I got was extreme disappointment.

Before the surgery, my fiancé was absent, and not a single family member was there.

Who was I, really?

I was on the cold operating table alone and fell asleep as the anesthesia took over.

No one waited for me and tried to comfort me.

My parents had died in an accident years ago, so I had lost my safe haven already.

After waking up, I checked Sylvie's social media. As I had expected, she had posted.

The background was a dazzling banquet hall, and she was holding beautiful flowers and many gifts.

The caption read, "So happy to celebrate my birthday with Connor and his parents."

After the surgery, the doctor asked if I needed help to contact my family.

I stared at the photo and shook my head with a bitter smile. My face looked particularly pale under the hospital lights.

No one knew that I had called Connor as soon as I woke up.

I asked him why he didn't come.

He said, "It's just a small thing. Why are you making it a big deal?"
