Or will the past make him into the monster he is thought to be?

Chapter 1 HEIST.

CHAPTER 1: HEIST.

MAX'S POV.

"Hurry up already!"

Turning to the left, I glared at the one grumbling at me, holding back from saying a word I considered vulgar at the time.

"Why don't you come zap the door open with some jolts of electricity, Zack? I bet you wouldn't mind spending the next five years in the sovereignty's prison if we get caught breaking into one of their properties."

"Well, just be a little faster," Zack responded.

"Would you just shut the hell up and let him do what he does best?" Quin retorted frustratedly. "The only reason I let you on this job is because of what I owe you. Don't make me wish I shouldn't have."

"Okay. Fine. My lips are sealed," Zack replied, speaking no further.

Finally, there was some quiet. Focusing, I typed on my mini keyboard, which projected from my wrist watch like a hologram. It was an AI-powered gadget.

Zack yawned, nonverbally communicating that I was taking long, but I ignored him. What a jerk he was.

After a little while, we heard a click within the door. The control panel, which was previously red, turned green.

"Finally," Zack sighed and pushed the door open, walking in first. Quin and I followed.

"How are we doing out there, Chloe?" Quin inquired via the earpiece we all had on.

"Looking good so far. I'll let you know when the guard returns, which shouldn't be any time soon," she replied, very assured.

"Okay. Keep your eyes peeled. We wouldn't want any surprises."

"Copy that," Chloe responded.

"Okay. Like we said, grab and walk. Then we get paid and go home happy," Quin instructed.

"Okey dokey," Zack replied.

Soberly, I went ahead and began loading my bag. We took only items made from the meteors. They were articles mostly affordable to the high and mighty of society, and were highly priced on the black market.

Zack laughed in excitement. "Oh boy. We've hit the mother lode. Your debt is repaid in full, with a thousand interest on top of it."

Quin said nothing in response as though no one had talked to her.

Indeed, this facility had a lot of things made from the meteors. Finding one to pull off a heist was a miracle. I guess Lady Luck was on our side.

I was excited as well, but didn't show it. The money this job would fetch me was going to be significant, hence the reason I took the risk despite how dangerous it was.

While we were all loading our bags, I came across a brochure. I paused what I was doing for a bit and looked at it. Picking it up, I smiled subtly.

"The Founders Academy."

I kept on smiling as I looked at it, perusing through the pages. I totally forgot what I had been doing.

"Someone's gotten carried away," Zack said. I dropped it lackadaisically and continued loading my bag

"You're still fantasizing about being accepted into the academy, huh? I'm glad you saved yourself the trouble of the disappointment by not applying this year. Only folks like us with potential will be getting in. I can't wait to get my acceptance letter soon," Zack bragged.

"Good for you," I responded, choosing not to take offense at what he said.

"Uh, guys? We've got company," Chloe announced.

"What? But the new shift is not supposed to begin until seven more minutes," Andy said, furrowing his brow.

"Yeah. I guess something made this one resume earlier than the rest usually does. You all have three minutes tops to get out of there," Chloe replied with urgency in her tone.

Turning to me and Zack, Quin said, "Attach the gravity defuser to your bags. It's time to go."

"Oh, man. I'd have loved to get more stuff," Zack grumbled as he tied his bag.

As I tied mine, my attention was drawn to something on the floor. It was a pendant. I couldn't help but reach for it. It was as though it was calling to me.

Picking it, I saw that it was made from a green meteor. The rarest of all the meteors. It began glowing as I picked it up, increasing in its intensity. I furrowed my brow as I looked at it.

"Max! What are you doing? We gotta go," Quin snapped, startling me. It was as though I lost consciousness of time.

I quickly kept the pendant in my pocket instead of the bag. I attached the gravity defuser to my bag, and then we all ran out. The gravity defuser made the bags light as balloons.

We ran down the hallway to the opening of the vent where we came in through.

"Quin, you first," I said.

"Oh, ladies first, huh?" Zach scoffed. His nervousness was evident.

I lifted her into the vent. Giving her our bags, I helped Zack up into the vent.

"Guys, you'd better hurry. He's a few meters away from the door," Chloe said. I looked at the door briefly with widened eyes.

Quin quickly let down a rope. It had knots at various intervals to help one climb up. So I took hold of the rope and climbed up as fast as I could.

Getting into the vent, I pulled up the rope and closed the vent just when the guard opened the door. We all got quiet, controlling our breathing.

Each step the guard took resounded in the quiet hallway. His gun matched his fitting ash and black uniform. The guard's helmet made him look even more terrifying.

The guard walked forward, passing right under us. Suddenly, he halted. We feared he had observed something. My heart began racing at that point.

After a little while, we heard him walking away, his steps receding. We all sighed in relief.

Seeing that the coast was clear, we quickly made our way out, crawling through the vents, and met Chloe outside the facility in the van we came with. She zoomed off the moment we got in.

"You all made it out in one piece. Thank goodness," she sighed in relief, driving off.

"What else were you expecting?" Zack said boastfully. Chloe scoffed, rolling her eyes.

"Head straight to the Creeks. Time to get paid."

"And get drunk," Zack added, smiling. Very typical of him.

"By the way, you never told us who gave you this tip, Quin," Chloe said.

"Just some random dude I met at the bar. I'm glad it turned out to be right," she replied casually.

'Some random dude? How did he know so much about the place?' I said to myself. I found it kind of odd, but I shrugged it off. All I wanted was the money.

______________

Getting home later that night, I sighed frustratedly. I always hated returning to that house. Taking off the hood of my jacket, I walked into the house.

As usual, my mom, stepdad, and Carl, my stepbrother, were seated in the living room, watching TV.

"Hey," I greeted, walking to the stairs.

"Hey, Max," my mom replied. She was the only one who replied, turning in my direction.

"Dinner is in the kitchen. We didn't know when you were returning, so we ate without you."

"Thanks, Mom," I nodded, forcing a smile.

Carl snickered as he briefly glanced at me, rolling his eyes. I ignored him and walked up to my room, locking the door as I usually did. I fell on my bed facing upward.

I sighed as I was exhausted. My phone chimed as I received a notification. I reached into my front pocket and brought out my phone. A mild smile crept up my face as I saw what it was.

Quin wired my share of the loot. It was twenty-six thousand dollars. I quickly wired half of the money to Julia, my girlfriend. I had promised to take care of a need she told me of about a week ago. Then I went ahead to call her.

"Hey, babe."

"Max. Hey," she answered.

"I sent you some money. It's more than enough to take care of that thing you told me about."

"Oh my God! Thank you, Max. You're the best," she said excitedly.

"You're welcome," I smiled. I was about to strike up a conversation when she ended the call.

I shrugged and tossed my phone aside. I didn't even get as much as an "I love you."

I reached into my pocket and brought out the pendant I found at the facility. I held it by the chain attached to it as I looked at it for a little while.

Suddenly, I heard a knock on my door. I quickly got up and kept the pendant in my pocket, then I opened my door.

"Carl, what's up?"

"You're needed downstairs," he replied and walked away. I furrowed my brow, wondering what it was for. So, I shut my door and headed downstairs.

I saw my Mom and stepdad at the door from the top of the stairwell. As I walked down and got to the door, my heart thumped.

"Here's my son, Max," my mom said.

There was a Sovereign official who stood by the door with two enforcers, holding their weapons.

'Shit! It's over for me. I've been caught,' I concluded within myself as I looked at the official, staring stoically at me.

I Slapped My Fiancé-Then Married His Billionaire Nemesis

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
