Chapter 1 🌑 CHAPTER ONE: THE RULE OF SILENCE

The wind smelled like burnt magic.

Sharp. Ancient. Familiar.

Sophie stood at the edge of the ruined temple, eyes locked on the shadow creeping across the stones. Her breath stayed still in her chest, like even the air knew not to make a sound.

"Never speak first. Never love too deep. Never trust a man with shadow in his blood."

That's what they told her growing up. The rule of silence. The law of her bloodline.

But no one ever said what to do when the shadows spoke first.

She felt him before she saw him.

Dark energy. Cold presence. That quiet thunder in the chest.

Then he stepped through the archway-like sin carved into a man. Tall. Tatted. Black eyes rimmed in silver light. His aura hummed with magic and death. But his gaze?

His gaze didn't kill.

It studied.

It listened.

Like he already knew her secrets.

> "You don't belong here," she said, softly.

Her voice cracked-her throat unused to forming words around strangers. Around men.

> "Neither do you," he replied, stepping closer.

His voice wasn't loud. It was low. Controlled. Every syllable felt like a spell dragging across her skin.

She took a step back. The stone beneath her bare feet was cold, cracked, bleeding energy. This place was sacred once. But now? It pulsed with a curse... the same one in her veins.

> "Who are you?" she asked.

He tilted his head, like he was surprised she dared to speak again.

> "Zae. Shadowborn. Bound to the Order of Ash. I was sent to find you... before the curse does."

Her stomach dropped.

> They found me.

She turned sharply, ready to run-but his voice caught her.

> "If you run, it wakes faster."

She froze.

> "The silence inside you?" he added, his voice closer now. "It's growing. If you don't learn to control it... it'll destroy you."

Sophie felt it too-the way her heart beat louder than her thoughts, the way her skin buzzed with invisible fire.

She hated how calm he sounded. Like this wasn't her life unraveling. Like he wasn't the exact kind of man she was warned to stay away from.

Tatted. Shadow-eyed. Handsome in a dangerous kind of way.

> "You don't know me," she whispered.

He took one last step closer.

> "I don't need to," he said.

"Your silence is screaming."

I received a pornographic video. "Do you like this?" The man speaking in the video is my husband, Mark, whom I haven't seen for several months. He is naked, his shirt and pants scattered on the ground, thrusting forcefully on a woman whose face I can't see, her plump and round breasts bouncing vigorously. I can clearly hear the slapping sounds in the video, mixed with lustful moans and grunts. "Yes, yes, fuck me hard, baby," the woman screams ecstatically in response. "You naughty girl!" Mark stands up and flips her over, slapping her buttocks as he speaks. "Stick your ass up!" The woman giggles, turns around, sways her buttocks, and kneels on the bed. I feel like someone has poured a bucket of ice water on my head. It's bad enough that my husband is having an affair, but what's worse is that the other woman is my own sister, Bella. ************************************************************************************************************************ "I want to get a divorce, Mark," I repeated myself in case he didn't hear me the first time-even though I knew he'd heard me clearly. He stared at me with a frown before answering coldly, "It's not up to you! I'm very busy, don't waste my time with such boring topics, or try to attract my attention!" The last thing I was going to do was argue or bicker with him. "I will have the lawyer send you the divorce agreement," was all I said, as calmly as I could muster. He didn't even say another word after that and just went through the door he'd been standing in front of, slamming it harshly behind him. My eyes lingered on the knob of the door a bit absentmindedly before I pulled the wedding ring off my finger and placed it on the table. I grabbed my suitcase, which I'd already had my things packed in and headed out of the house.
