Chapter 1

"Miss Wade, are you sure you want to end the pregnancy? You've undergone IVF eighteen times, and you are already in poor health. If you end the pregnancy now, you will never be able to get pregnant again." The attending doctor was puzzled by my request to end the pregnancy. "What about Mr. Wade? Does he agree with your decision?"

Hearing Louis Wade was mentioned, my heart trembled. I clenched my fists tightly to hold back the tears. "We haven't gotten married, so I can decide on my own about the baby."

The doctor seemed surprised by my response.

He glanced at my file, where the marital status was clearly stated as "single." He sighed, "Alright. The surgery is arranged on the seventh day."

He handed me a business card. "If you change your mind during this time, please feel free to contact me."

Just as he finished speaking, I received a call from Louis. His gentle voice came through the phone. "Kaia, I'm sorry I can't be with you on your birthday, but I have a surprise for you. Look out the window."

I walked to the window while raising my phone. Across the street from the hospital was the largest office building in the city. At that moment, the entire building displayed a few large words. "Kaia, I love you."

Louis said on the phone, "Kaia, I'll work hard to create a better life for you and our baby."

I responded in a low voice and then hung up with the excuse of being exhausted.

"Miss Hussain, forgive me for speaking out of turn. But perhaps you'd better reconsider it. Mr. Wade seems to care deeply for you and the baby. If there's any misunderstanding between you and him, it might be better to clear it up. Once you make up your mind and carry out the plan, it will be irreversible." The doctor was usually reticent, but he tried to persuade me again.

It was natural that he was shocked.

Louis had indeed been very good to me.

Three years ago, when my family's business, the Hussain Group, went bankrupt, it was known throughout the city.

But Louis paid off the debts for me and proposed to me with fireworks that lit up the entire city, although there were rumors about me, and his family tried to stop him.

However, his ID card was hidden by his family, so we never registered our marriage, even though we held a grand wedding. "Kaia, a marriage certificate can't bind anything, but my heart will always beat only for you."

From the time I started IVF to when I became pregnant, I was never alone at the hospital, and he was always with me, except this time, he had to deal with something.

Whenever the doctor prescribed some medicine for me, he would ask about the side effects of medications with a nervous and almost obsessive caution that amused the doctors.

Everything seemed like a fairy tale.

If I hadn't accidentally discovered Louis's betrayal, I would have believed that I was the happy Cinderella.

A week ago, Louis hadn't returned from a business gathering late at night. I couldn't go to sleep in my late pregnancy and went for a walk in the neighborhood.

Then I saw Louis drunk and holding his secretary, Vivian Lambert, in his arms at the entrance of the villa. "Only you are the mother of my baby. If you can't give birth to a baby, I'll have Kaia do it for you."

At that moment, I couldn't breathe.

My health made it difficult for me to conceive, and Louis always claimed he didn't like kids. Yet, in his dreams, he had murmured with tears, "Baby. I really want a baby of my own."

To give birth to a baby with him, I suggested IVF. I had countless medications and tried eighteen attempts before I finally became pregnant.

But what did Louis say just now?

Were he and Vivian the parents of the baby in my belly?

I didn't remember how I made it home that night. But I still felt a chill washing over me when I remembered their conversation.

"Miss Hussain?" The doctor noticed my distraction and asked with concern, "Are you alright?"

I took the surgery notice and signed my name seriously. "I'm fine. See you seven days later. And please keep this matter secret from Louis."

After the doctor confirmed it, I left the hospital.

On my way home, I received a text from Louis. "Kaia, it will be our wedding anniversary next week. I'll be back to give you a surprise."

I managed a smile and replied, "I have a surprise for you, too."

Louis seemed excited as he sent several emojis of being expectant. "Kaia, I'm looking forward to it. Whatever you give me, I'll love it."

I put my phone back in my purse.

"Louis, I hope you'll truly like this gift," I thought.
