After my father died, my mother, who had married into a wealthy family, took me back to the He family. Everyone laughed at the fact that I was a child bride raised by my mother for the He brothers. Even I thought so. But when I tried to marry one of them, both of them rejected me. The elder brother said, "How could I marry her when I'm going to be joined in marriage later?" The brother said, "She is older than me, who would marry an old woman?" But the next day, both of them proposed to my young assistant together. I instantly became a laughingstock. The moment I left my job, I dialed the phone, "Mom, I'm willing to join forces with the Gu family."

Chapter 1

After my father passed away, my mother, who had married into wealth, brought me to the Wall family.

Everyone mocked me as the bride raised for the two Wall brothers.

Even I believed it.

But when I tried to marry one of them, both rejected me.

The big brother Brice Wall said, "I'm set for a strategic marriage. Why would I choose her?"

The little brother Cristian Wall said, "She's older than me. Who marries an older woman?"

Yet the next day, both proposed to my assistant.

I became a laughingstock.

As I quit, I dialed a number. "Mom, I'm ready to marry into the Ellis family."

I stepped out of the office when Brice called.

His voice was cold, laced with irritation.

"Novalee, why did you leave work without saying anything? Didn't I tell you to wait for Makenzie?"

Cristian's voice chimed in, complaining. "Exactly. You left early without telling us. Makenzie's still at the office. Who's taking her home now?"

I glanced at my reflection on the screen.

My face was pale, my frame frail, as if a breeze could knock me over.

Born premature, I was always weak.

When I first arrived at the Wall family, the brothers fussed over me.

As kids, they monitored my diet.

When I fell ill, they cared for me, finding ways to cheer me up.

Once, Brice, on a business trip abroad, flew back overnight after I mentioned a headache.

Then Makenzie appeared, and everything changed.

My migraines went ignored.

My illnesses no longer mattered to them.

I hung up quietly.

In the car, I called my mother.

"Mom, I've decided. I'll marry into the Ellis family."

A pause lingered on the line. "Sweetheart, are you sure?"

My parents divorced when I was young, and I stayed with my dad.

At eight, after he died, my mother, remarried into wealth, brought me to the Wall family.

She told me, "Sweetheart, to stay here, you need to win over Karl and his sons."

Later, she said, "Sweetheart, Karl wants a tie with the Ellis family. Think about marrying their eldest son."

I didn't understand why she pushed for it when she wanted me to stay.

Now I realized she saw clearly.

She knew I was just a toy for the brothers when they were bored.

She had planned my escape from the start.

I opened my phone to book a flight but saw Makenzie's message and photo. "True love falls from the sky. Thank you, fate."

She flaunted two emerald bracelets on her wrist, standing in my old greenhouse.

Those bracelets were meant for my birthday, a gift from the brothers, now on her hands.

I blocked Makenzie.

"Mom, I'm serious. I'll marry into the Ellis family."

"Good. I'll talk to Karl. The Ellis family mentioned Wednesday's a good day to register. Head to the capital early."

I nodded, texting back a simple okay.

My mother likely sensed something.

Before hanging up, she added, "Talk to them properly."

I didn't reply, just looked up at the sky.

Six days left.

In those six days, I would say a proper goodbye to everything.
